Ladies and gents, can anyone help me?

I am a lover of fragrance but have not learned how to differentiate between top/heart/base? Why doesnt my nose do this? My DP can, and finds it amusing, but he doesnt even buy perfume!

I have to buy blind at the moment, largely, because my closest city is a long distance, so often try to opt for smaller bottles. However, i purchased an affordable bottle of clinique elixir this week and love it apart from one element - something dry, sharp, old........what will that element be? How do i learn to discern what ingredient offends me or flatters?

I know I've got a customised bottle of SSOTPE (with added frankincense!) For Xmas so I'm being very greedy really ;)

I've just received a dodgy Hermes perfume from evilbay for the first time. It doesn't smell anything like the real thing. It's a horrid synthetic amber. So I'm returning it. And I was so looking forward to it 😢

I finally got my money back for the fake obsession.
Buyer adamant its real...I pointed out that CK didn't release blank glass bottles...
Grrr

I've had a few fakes...time to give up on ebay for perfume I think

Next sell bath and body works stiff now...
All on offer atm so I've bought a few...I really like snowflakes and cashmer❄️ and snowy peach Berry 🍑

whatever it is it reminds me of something i didnt like about chanel no5.

I used to really love clinique aromatics elixir @weirdarchitecture - it was my absolute favourite perfume, and the first "grown up" scent I bought myself - but they've reformulated it and my new bottle gets this weird stale curry note after about thirty minutes. I could have cried; it used to be so unusual - rich and spicy, with incense, balsams, and this dark green mossy-ness. Not anymore

Perhaps you're getting the aldehydes? Chanel No5 has a huge aldehydic top, and to many this comes across as sharp. Also, so many perfumes from the 20th century used aldehydes, they can seem dated and old fashioned now.

There don't seem to be many stand out Black Friday deals this year. In fact the offers I've seen seem notably unspectacular. The only deal that caught my eye was an email from Serge Lutens: 25% of his 'creations' (their words), but I'm doing my very hardest to resist this, as I blind bought both Arabie and Ambre Sultan this time last year, and if I look at their website I just know I'll be tempted.

Bath and Bodyworks look great value @Opal8, and so many winter-y/Christmassy scents! ❄️ I've not heard of them before, so will have to have a nosy instore next week.

SOTD Cinnabar, for a little Black Friday shopping on the high street. Saw some lovely Christmas decorations and baubles in M&S, and a little Christmas tree to put in my bedroom. 🎄

@aprilady Une Rose is one of my favourites too. I think it's the best Rose ever along with La Fille de Berlin. Though I also have a soft spot for Lipstick Rose.

@WeirdArchitecture I'm a complete beginner too and a site I looked at last night was www.fragrantica.com/ . I found it quite good at finding out what I think I liked about a perfume, so I know more about which notes I like. You can search for new perfumes based on this.

If you type in a perfume you like, it'll also suggest others you might enjoy.

There's a forum, too.

I actually have a really bad sense of smell. I can deferentiate between when I first put something on (mostly topnote maybe?) to how it goes after a few minutes (the rest.)

But my theory is we don't necessarily have to be able to do that stuff to enjoy and experience perfumes.

That's a great tip off Opal08! I love Bath and Bodyworks. I didn't know you get them in the UK now. The hand gels were amazing as I recall from last time I was in the US
