My grey hair just doesn't suit me!

Been growing out my grey for 20 months.
It game through white first , now it's more patchy steel grey and darker bits at the back.
I wanted to embrace it and love it but it just doesn't suit me!
Looking for light brown hair dye recommendations please.

I know. Sex on a stick - lucky, lucky Shirley! He seems a really nice guy too.

lannistunut · 07/08/2021 18:32

A lot of us have internalised sexist and ageist ideas about grey hair. i agree with this.

I saw Spandau Ballet in Glasgow a few years ago...

He was as handsome as ever .. the crowd went crazy when he walked on 🤣

Tony Hadley is another handsome grey transitioner ☺️ very distinguished 👑

I'm not mad keen on my hair being grey but it makes life so much easier. I was always stressing about the roots.

My hair does seem thicker. I was worried about my hair thinning as I got older.

I probably look older but I think I'm over I do try to wear make up and be well groomed

GreyWhite · 07/08/2021 19:43

Interesting thread. Am 41 and thinking of growing my roots out. I’m pretty much all white.

But I am worried it won’t suit me. My hair is naturally quite dark brown, but pale skin prone to redness and freckles… eyes seem to have gone turquoise in recent years (started brown when I was a kid, then hazel…) so feel like I may just look totally washed out and colorless.

Loving various IG accounts showing their “grey journey” but can’t find any with my kind of colouring.

Would you dare post a photo op?

GreyWhite · 07/08/2021 19:46

Oh and recent weight gain and stress (work/bereavement) have really aged me. My skin looks old and tired, really unsure of adding to that….

jesusmaryjosephandtheweedonkey · 07/08/2021 19:48

This is what is was like during me growing it out.
If only it had stayed this colour

My grey hair just doesn't suit me!

Looks lovely! What is it like now then?

jesusmaryjosephandtheweedonkey · 07/08/2021 20:00

All grey but pure white at the front with dark, almost black patches and various different shades. I'm gutted

When I grew mine out had balayage for a couple of years to even out the dark areas. That's worked well

grey12 · 08/08/2021 10:30

@GreyWhite out of topic but for me the best thing for redness is a honey mask. Just smear honey on your face and leave for 10-20 min Wink

Honestly? If you're going to dye it again, I think a salon is the only way to go, lots of home-dyes look flat or don't take very well on grey hair.

I think it depends on the hair underneath, my grey isn't flat, so the colour on top picks up the tones underneath. Or that's what I tell myself, as I can't afford a salon dye.

I've been going grey since my twenties and hennaed it for years. Got to my early 40s and henna started to look really orange in places, so I embraced the grey. I looked bloody dreadful, my hair is a combination of white, grey and mousey underneath, I am deathly pale with light eyes. The change just turned me into a corpse and I needed make up everyday. I've given up and resort to dying it, not keen on the chemicals though. I find Casting dark blonde semi-perm dyes my hair permanently, I only touch up the roots and it fades to a mid blonde.

Tbf the majority of grey hair is patchy. It's nearly always much lighter at the front and gradually gets darker towards the back. Going pure white straight away only happens to a selected few.
I use purple shampoo and it tones down my darker bits.
I've joined the gym and swim a lot. I've been looking at women who have let their hair go natural. There nearly is always a band of darker hair at the back no matter how light the rest of their hair is.
I like my hair to be very short but it looked worse with the patchiness, its not so bad with a bit of length in it.
You can see my darker bits here, but looking at me from the front all you can see is white.

My grey hair just doesn't suit me!

*Ok, but i dont see it necessarily as letting yourself go, and i
equate it more to looking elderly and like a nana

Ageist rubbish. My hair has silver streaks in it. It’s centre parted and l get loads and loads of compliments on it. People ask me if it’s dyed that way.

I’m not sure what a ‘nana’ is supposed to look like either. I shop at Cos, Other Stories and Arket. Are they ‘nana’ shops?Hmm

Your hair is lovely

Why do you think hair always goes lighter at the front do you think? Mine is also like that.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 08/08/2021 11:44

It greys faster where the skin is thinner. That’s why temples go first.

I never knew that. Thanks
Oblomov21 · 08/08/2021 11:52

I agree. Some women are lucky enough to be gifted a nice coloured grey. Some are just not nice!
But personally I wouldn't go brown OP. Id keep it grey, but I'd get highlights done, on the bits you don't like, ie the darker grey bits?

Dozer · 08/08/2021 12:06

OP, your natural grey in that photo looks great!

Dozer · 08/08/2021 12:07

Given that it looks like that, defo wouldn’t go back on the dye, especially if you don’t want to spend £££ at salons and would be using home dyes.

Cocolapew · 08/08/2021 12:56

Thanks Woodhill, I never knew the reason why either.
My mum went grey in her 30''s and had a perfect dark line going across the back of her head until her 60's.

justasking111 · 08/08/2021 12:58

A balayage lasts ages unlike full head dyes three times a year is better for my hair and purse

Cocolapew · 08/08/2021 12:58

I think your hair looks great op!

QueenBee52 · 08/08/2021 13:25

Your hair is GORGEOUS... and I love the cut too... beautiful and fresh looking 💕
