What to wear on dinner date

Mid forties and totally out of practise. The internet isnt helping as I get women with shirts unbuttoned to navel or midriff showing (yikes).

I want to look low key but irresistibly sexy just as everyone does. Don't think i want to wear jeans. What does everyone else wear?

Is it a posh dinner date?

What about a long pleated skirt and a silk camisole with a squishy blazer?

Divebar2021 · 26/07/2021 08:37

Well I don’t go on dinner dates so you can feel free to ignore my advice but I don’t like to be too casual or too dolled up. I have a pair of black jersey evening trousers from The White Company ( not too formal) and a loose black top from Kin that I would French tuck and a pair of block heeled sandals from Jigsaw. Add a nice crossbody bag which I don’t actually have. Alternatively a white silk shirt from Arket worn a bit loose & undone ( cuffs unbuttoned and maybe rolled etc). A little bit of jewellery but nothing shouty. Hope you have a lovely time whatever you wear

I love a photo!!!!!

A dress for sure, in my experience women like dresses! How posh is the dinner?
Some ideas here, which I’d wear with neutral flat sandals or a wedge

Standrew, where is that final dress from? Love it

DGFB · 26/07/2021 08:46

And I meant to say men like dresses! Though women obviously do too

Thank you. I thought dress, but there seems to be nothing in between a floaty day dress and a little black dress which seems over the top.

Also heels? Quite old skool to wear heels these days and haven't worn in years but feel that they might be the thing that elevates from day wear to sexy? Is this the naffest statement ever...
Shit Ive been single forever and don't want to blow it by turning up looking like an idiot

Thanks for these but am struggling. See the first is like a day dress and the second is a bit too full on, although I like them both. I don't like the third at all, sorry. It's got a sprissy mummy blogger vibe which im not into all.

Likewise dont really want to wear a tent but maybe not quite the herve leger bandeau dress either. Really hard...

haven't worn in years but feel that they might be the thing that elevates from day wear to sexy?

I hope you find something that is comfortable and makes you feel good and sexy, so that you can forget what you are wearing, relax and enjoy the date.

Is sexy for you that you look attractive to the male gaze or that you feel comfortable and confident in your own skin?

High heels that you haven't worn in years might not be that comfortable. Discomfort would show on your face. It doesn't sound to me as if uncomfortable shoes would be idea for a first date.

This is uncomfortable close to some of the issues raised in the Olympics for men v women's uniforms. Women being expected to wear skimpy clothes for the male gaze, so they can't be comfortable when in public.

No one wants to feel a frump but putting your feet in high heels doesn't seem the right way forward for me.

I think it is the nature and quality of the fabric that elevates from day wear to evening. Hope you find something that makes you feel great.

znaika · 26/07/2021 10:24

I hear what you're saying about the male gaze and this would be correct ina work or social sense where my sexual attractiveness ia not the point. However, this is not men in general i want to dind me sexy but one specific man who I want to have sex with! I want him to be aroused by me, that's kind of the point. Ee have had coffee and walking dates and he wants to buy me dinner.

I am a widow. I (foolishly) didnt date for 10 years and want some action

I could feel confident & sexy in any of these whereas someone else wouldn't. It's all in the eye of the beholder stuff isn't it? Wear something that makes you feel confident, because it's often the confidence that's sexy.

I think it depends on what is your usual style. Are you a smart casual kind of dresser? What did you wear on your previous dates? Also on your body shape, and what part of your body do you feel is your best feature. If it was me, I'd wear a dress over trousers, something a plain colour but definitely not black. I'd do my hair, makeup, and wear nice jewellery., to lift my outfit. I'd wear heels, as long as I'm. Out walking far.

whatisthisinhere · 26/07/2021 11:32

As Long as I'm not walking far

znaika · 26/07/2021 12:50

Before I wore jeans and wellies and then jeans and trainers (walking) and cigarette pants, shirt and trainer(after work) I never wear dresses. I hate all types of jewellery. I suppose I prefer clean lines to frilly and fussy and the edgy, artful tent look is not for me either.
I have a shit face but great body. Tall, long slim legs (best feature) small waist and medium boobs that dont need scaffolding.

Maybe its the face I should be worried about as am crap at makeup too...

Failsafe: go to the Matches Fashion site and choose whatever seems most 'you' from their house brand.

AlbertBridge · 26/07/2021 13:01

It depends where you’re going.

When I was 40, divorced and dating now DH, I wore a new dress every time. 😆 Wrap dresses are great anywhere. If I had your body I’d wear a sleeveless LBD, maybe backless in this heat if I liked my arms, and strappy flat glitzy sandals. Let other people rush they’d dressed up. You rock those legs!

AlbertBridge · 26/07/2021 13:02

Do NOT wear one of the billowing Littke House On The Prairie dresses that are everywhere at the moment. That’ll do nothing to arouse him. Think like Karen Millen type dresses. If you’ve got long slim tanned legs you don’t have to to wear heels. Wear barely-there flat sandals.

Defiantly41 · 26/07/2021 13:09

How about one of these from Anthropologie? The plain one is more overtly sexy but not as full on as the bodycon one posted earlier

Reiss have some lovely elegant jumpsuits in at the moment. Your figure sounds amazing so emphasise that waist with a cinching belt. And HAVE FUN 🤩

HaroldTheHare · 26/07/2021 13:35

Whistles have some really lovely dresses & elegant jumpsuits. Might be worth a look there
I also like Sezane for understated sexy summer vibes
Good luck with the date. I'm sure he'll be bowled over by whatever you wear

atleastitswarm · 26/07/2021 13:41

Agree with PP, if you’ve got great legs don’t go for one of those long loose billowy dresses that are in at the minute. Maybe a midi with a bit of a slit in the side like the first one @Defiantly41 has posted - shows off your legs without being too much? Also agree that you can skip heels if you are tall and long of leg, go for a nice flat sandal.

Ahhh I’m excited for you OP Grin

This is great> Thank you! It's what I was trying to articulate about tents or day dresses, so comfy and airy for the day but I fear they may be an erection killer. What about the face? Can I get Halle Berry's face for the night? Grin
