Shein clothing.. Is it worth it?

Thoughts on Shein clothing? Been wanting to get a few things but worried about sizing. I'm a UK size 12 in top and bottom. Is it worth the money? What is the quality like?

It's shite, unethical

SmidgenofaPigeon · 20/07/2021 22:41

Nah it’s really bad, I nearly went for it as the maternity dresses looked really pretty but having researched i wouldn’t buy from them.

Aintnohollaback · 20/07/2021 22:43

I feared that might be the case!

See this is what I’ve always thought but someone at work was wearing a really lovely dress from there last week.
She said she’s very careful about reading the reviews and looking at customer photos to check the quality before buying. I think I might give it a try for some cheap holiday beach dresses.

BlackCatsRule88 · 20/07/2021 22:45

You get what you pay for. It’s a tiny bit better than primark. Sizing/fit can be quite random. You’ll probably return about 75% of your order. It’s a shame as a lot of their designs are quite nice and look great in their photos, it’s just when it arrives it can often be shapeless and/or poor quality.

Senorasurf · 20/07/2021 22:46

I disagree- I thinks it's akin to primark. Some stuff is great, some is awful. I always read the reviews (particularly the ones with photos) and size up or down depending on how people have rated the fit. I tend not to buy the things that don't have any reviews as in the past it's been rubbish.

I like to buy the quick fashion/bits I know will only last 1 season from there and have no complaints at all.

Yafilthyanimal · 20/07/2021 22:46

Awful quality. Worse than primark by far.

Aintnohollaback · 20/07/2021 22:47

I've seen some lovely skirts and dresses and of course the models look amazing.. Knowing my luck I'd look like a sack on spuds in anything from there, 😁

They steal designs from small designers and sell at a fraction of the price paying their workers peanuts.

I’ve ordered from there a few times now. The very poor ethics / fast fashion aside… (it’s no worse than Primark and people don’t get battered on here for it!)

I’d order again. I’ve got lots of lovely bikinis. The dresses are thin, not double lined but I’d say quality is basically Primark like. The bikinis and workout gear were definitely higher quality. I spent around £6 per item. Worth it to me - always a discount code. I use the comments - people comment on the quality and tell you their weight and height and what size they bought.
I’m a size 8-10 and a small, never been any bigger on there

It's a lot worse than primark.

As a UK listed company, ABF are under immense pressure to ensure there is no modern slavery or unethical working practices in their supply chain. They report publicly on how they do this.

Shein is Chinese owned and not under these same societal pressures. A quick Google will tell you all you need to know.

mummatomason · 20/07/2021 22:54

Its a bit hit and miss. I brought 5 things and 1 top was lovely quality, 1 was passable and the others where odd shaped and thin material.
The reviews are pretty handy to judge what youl end up with but i personally wont order again

Heathrug · 20/07/2021 22:56

One of my favourite summer dresses is from shein and everyone compliments it. Some stuff isn’t great but it’s no worse than primark. I liked it and was happy with it. The delivery took ages.

Aintnohollaback · 20/07/2021 22:56

Oh dear.. Least Primarks sizing is fairly accurate.

OP posts:
cheeseychovolate · 20/07/2021 22:58

Small size wise. Not great quality.

properg · 20/07/2021 23:11

It's not comparable to Primark at all.

lemorella · 20/07/2021 23:16

Terrible - 3 dresses I bought were practically plastic!

Got a few kitchen gadgets that are okay though.

Wouldn't use again.

TheSlayer · 20/07/2021 23:30

Bought shorts from them and they were wayyy too small. Can't work out if I am too fat or they size down....

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 21/07/2021 09:32

You don't sound convinced OP.

Is Shein Ethical?

'Their goal is to destroy everyone' - recent BBC article (trigger warning) about the Uighur slave labour camps in China that Shein almost certainly use.
(Lots of other retailers have been implicated too, and it's not proven that Shein actually use them, but I don't think that's a reason to start buying from Shein. In my eyes, their general lack of ethics and low prices point towards them definitely using the labour camps.)

SusannaM · 21/07/2021 09:37

DD and friends buy quite a lot from them, as long as you are careful and check reviews, they are fine, she's actually had a few really nice things.
Ethically, I'm surprised teens don't care, aren't they supposed to be the Greta generatio? Although a few of the things she's seen on Shein, are available with a different label on eBay and Amazon, so I suspect it's difficult to avoid the exploitation aspect.

Houseofvelour · 21/07/2021 09:40

I love shein and buy from them all the time. You have to read the reviews.

Divineswirls · 21/07/2021 09:48

DD 14 has bought loads of stuff from them and they all fit and she loves them. I however wouldn't buy from them as the returns I think would be a nightmare. They take around 3 weeks to arrive.

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 21/07/2021 10:01

Actually gobsmacked that people don't seem to care about the ethical issues (slave labour, plagiarism, environmentally horrific) and instead just muse on the quality, time spent to fly items from China, and how easy returns are. They probably just chuck all returns in the bin! How is it so difficult to just buy from a European retailer who have much higher standards of social responsibility?

(I know H&M, Primark, New Look et al aren't perfect, but if I didn't have much money to spend on clothes and didn't want to buy secondhand I would rather buy from them than a company who I KNOW to be ethically bad)

I mean, how can someone literally type "very poor ethics [...] aside" on a thread about fast fashion in 2021? Do you not care about modern slavery? It's actually disgusting. No one needs to buy multiple new £6 dresses.
:(

nc8765 · 21/07/2021 10:14

Cheap, unethical crap.

prettypinkflamingo · 21/07/2021 10:24

I ordered a few items from there...all were thin, poorly fitting and all got returned.
Was impressed with the returns system though and got my refund quickly.
Wouldn't use them again though!
