Asked for blonde, got ginger again.

My hair is dark brown and grey. I've been trying to go blonde for 3 years and achieved a good colour prior to covid most of the time. I have foils.

My last hairdresser didn't do a good job last time and it was really warm and gingery. Just tried a new hairdresser and it's even more golden. What's going wrong? Am I being unrealistic? I'm asking for ash, bright blonde.

I think it’s nice OP - I can see what you mean about the roots though.

I have very mousey dark blonde hair and would love a mid ashy brown. But my hair refuses to play ball so I end up with warm brown hair that throws off a load of coppery tones in the light. The only way I can get cool tones is through bleaching and toning but I damaged it so much last year (lockdown hair done myself) I need to give the bleach a rest.

Upstairs99 · 09/07/2021 21:21

It's not ginger. The colour's pretty nice, not as bad as you're making out. It looks bone dry and fluffy with absolutely no shine though.

PurplePansy05 · 09/07/2021 21:22

I think you massively exaggerate about the colour and the roots tbh. Perhaps the roots could be a bit smallee but honestly it's not a bad job by any measure Hmm A different toner might help but it might not, your natural hair is looking grey so that might not be of help.

There's no warmth showing in these photos but your roots don't look fresh out of a salon. Finding a colourist that does a good ash blonde is very difficult in my experience. I go to someone very good (and very expensive) twice a year and he blends brilliantly, so my roots grow out seamlessly. In between, I tone it myself with Wella and use Fanola purple shampoo, which is the best out there!

GetTaeFuck · 09/07/2021 21:31

Don’t ask for 12% even with Olpalex if you don’t want it snapping off.

My hair is black and grey. My sister (hairdresser) used 6%, full head highlights/roots, wash, tone, every 6 weeks. By my 10th visit it was ice blonde. Not broken, not damaged. Along with Fudge shampoo, a deep condition, and as little heat styling as possible.

It was a long haul but totally worth it.

Carrott21 · 09/07/2021 21:35

GetTaeFuck that sounds good! Straighteners are a problem. I'm going to buy olaplex 3.

It's definitely not ginger, but the roots are long for a day! I stopped having foils because the roots were long. I much preferred the cap, but they no longer offered it anymore. Now I dye my own hair. It's much nicer than how the salon do it.

Bluntness100 · 09/07/2021 21:54

Op your hair is lovely and it doesn’t look ginger at all, nor is it stripey with ginger like the prevjous catty comment, it’s got nice tones in it. I think uoure so focused on it you’re not seeing it properly. Look at the pics youtself, it’s a lovely colour.

Carrott21 · 09/07/2021 22:00

@Bluntness100 thank you! Miaowwww Grin

Not being funny but your hair actually looks really nice! It doesn't lol ginger at all

Lizzie523 · 09/07/2021 22:30

OP I think those roots are unacceptable and I'd be wanting my money back or the roots done properly. Do you feel you happy with them? It doesn't sound like it.

Other than that I like the colour.

CorianderBee · 10/07/2021 01:21

I have dark brown hair (but was blonde until 14/15) and have never had this issue. Sometimes it takes two toners but they get there

Hopeislost · 10/07/2021 08:25

I find that even if the salon get my hair to a nice ashy blonde on the day, it starts going warm a few days later Hmm I use the Fanola no yellow shampoo to tone and Olaplex 3 for strength.

Carrott21 · 10/07/2021 08:30

Yes I think the toner covers a multitude of warmth! Then i get home and wash it. So is Fanola better than Fudge?

Doublestar · 10/07/2021 08:34

For what it's worth I think it's a gorgeous shade of blonde and I like the slight roots (very trendy you know?) I'm blonde and would love a darker baseline/routey effect but I can't as I've too much grey and have to have the colour brushed on all over to cover it 😭

MissKeithsNeice · 10/07/2021 08:42

The colour doesn't appear as ginger as j thought it would but its not a good job. Its quite patchy and uneven. It doesn't help that the ginger pieces are at front. Its def worse on the picture you took from above though, I reckon its probably ok in real life.

Can I ask how much you paid and where you live (roughly!) Have you ever read the MN threads where people lose their minds over the cost of other people's hair cut/colour?

YesIDoLoveCrisps · 10/07/2021 08:42

Yes roots are in. People pay to have them!

Carrott21 · 10/07/2021 08:53

I've just moved from a city to the back of beyond and thought I'd take a risk on the local salon. "Only" £60. The nearest town was going to £150 so I need to find a middle ground.

Nobody ever pays to have grey roots added in. They pay to have root smudges and blends and even dark roots to hide the fact that they've gone grey but never just grey roots.

Fanola is much better. Smells horrible but it's worth it for the result you get.
