Mother of Groom in trouble!

Sixmonthson · 05/07/2021 11:59

Please can someone, anyone, help me?

My son is getting married next month and I just can’t find anything I like to wear.

It’s at a country hotel, not overly formal but smart.

I am well endowed (34ff) and I’m not looking to put them on display. Much smaller bottom half. I usually go for a shift style dress size 14-16 to accommodate the norks but sometimes need to get the bottom half taken in which is fine. I also have a tummy I’d like to hide as much as possible without sacrificing comfort.

Colour wise I’m a spring - clear bright colours. Something summery, maybe a bit floaty perhaps? Knee length or below - although my legs are my best bits I’m not of an age to show them off any more (especially at my sons wedding)

I’d like a dress and pretty cardigan I think - I’ve tried my usual Hobbs but there’s nothing there that looks right on.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated

@MrsCat1

I too would suggest NancyMac. I have a beautiful dress from there. Really special. How about something like this?

I take it all back….

Those are the most stunning wedding guest dresses. Just beautiful.

My strongest recommendation is to get a minimising bra, and have it professionally fitted. I'm an E cup, and the difference having my bra professionally fitted is amazing, it's like gravity has had no influence Smile.

I know you mentioned phase 8 isn't a good fit, but this type of neckline can be very complimentary for gals with larger breasts.

And please don't be afraid about feeling like "mutton dressed as lamb". Wear something that you feel good in!

I love threads like this and how supportive everyone is. Good luck @Sixmonthson, let us know how you get on!

Hesma · 10/07/2021 19:31

I quite like this one from Bravissimo…. long skirt with split up side so you css as n show those sexy pins without being self conscious 😃 www.bravissimo.com/products/kimono-maxi-dress-pd888/

What about a wrap dress dress? I'm a 34J and wear this dress with a white cami under it. I have one with adjutable straps so I can have as much or little cleavage on show as I like.

Sixmonthson · 11/07/2021 08:45

I like both of the above but both are out of stock in my size.
Only a couple of days til my appointment on Tuesday so I’m hoping JL will come good for me :)

I agree with all Oblahdeeoblahdoe says and would like to thank you for all of the suggestions, I’m looking outside of my normal comfort zone thanks to you!

I’ll certainly keep you posted

Me and Em have some very carefully constructed dresses that you can alter to suit your figure type - fine zips down the front, for example, so you can do it up or have a V neckline. This one is lovely: www.meandem.com/polka-dot-print-pussybow-dress-and-tie-cream-black

How about a wrap style jumpsuit? SilkFred have some lovely ones

Powertoyou · 11/07/2021 18:33

I see your name has Tipperary in it, so maybe you are based in Ireland. There is a department store in Donegal called mchinneys, it has won store of the year before. And Sarah Jessica Parker has said that it’s amongst her favourite shops. Anyway look on line if you can visit, hundreds of outfits suitable for weddings. People travel for miles to shop there. It wii give you a few ideas anyway. Enjoy the wedding and your son and family will be proud of you always.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Bravissimo who have a clothing range geared towards fitting in large boobs. This dress would accessorise well with a flashy hat, shoes and bag

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 12/07/2021 07:58

@MiaowMiaow99 - I fell in love with that one, too, when I followed the first link on here to the Bombshell website! It's a beauty, isn't it! Unfortunately, stuck in the middle of the countryside and keeping myself locked down, I can't see any occasion arising where I could actually wear it, but never mind, an old bag can dream!

Divineswirls · 12/07/2021 16:51

Get a local tailor to tweak it to size if need be or even make you a dress from scratch

We did mention....several times!

Knittingnanny · 12/07/2021 17:11

Have a look at Pomodora clothing, I’ve worn several of their lovely dresses for weddings. They are generous in the bust area. I’m mid 60’s, DD and usually am a size 12 but their size 10 fits me perfectly.

MiaowMiaow99 · 12/07/2021 20:40

@Jaichangecentfoisdenom I know, I've lusted after it for years. Just need an occasion to wear it!!

Fairnair · 14/07/2021 16:52

OP how did you get with your John Lewis personal shopper appointment yesterday? Hope you got your outfit sorted for your son’s wedding!

Sixmonthson · 14/07/2021 18:23

Thank you for asking. Not too great to be honest – all the dresses she chose for me either didn’t fit or just didn’t suit me and in the end we agreed to leave it and that I should probably look elsewhere.
I had a friend with me and we went into a few other shops whilst we were in town and one of them had a few dresses I liked and I actually ended up buying one!

www.hobbs.com/product/belinda-floral-fit-and-flare-dress/0120-5612-9021L00-NAVY-MULTI-10.html?utm_source=linkshare&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_campaign=pfxNKSnglIM&utm_content=15&utm_term=UKNetwork&ranMID=38595&ranEAID=pfxNKSnglIM&ranSiteID=pfxNKSnglIM-Yk3bfxH7S4tMtKNbW9sa5Q&siteID=pfxNKSnglIM-Yk3bfxH7S4tMtKNbW9sa5Q&PubName=RedBrain&SID=3354356

It looks much nicer on than it does in the picture and having buttons at the front means I can open just as many as I feel comfortable with, so I still get my v neck in a way! I’m going to accessorise it with a really bright jacket, bag and shoes - probably either green or red. I’ve been on a mad spending spree on eBay today and have ordered a couple of short smart bolero type jackets already.

I also had another look on Bravissimo and to my surprise the dress that Hesma suggested appeared in my size so somebody must’ve returned one. I’ve ordered it and if it looks okay and I’m happy with it I’ll wear it for the meal the night before the wedding.

I know this is not a stunning dress or one that looks as spectacular as so many that were kindly suggested for me but there is a big backstory to this wedding –I don’t want to go into the whole story but if I say that I haven’t seen my ex or my ex best friend for many years you can probably guess the rest. I don’t want to look as if I’m trying too hard, better to be understated and retain my dignity I think.

Sorry about the huge link- I cant get it to shorten :)

OP I think that dress is elegant and classy. You will look great! I think some outfits that people think of as traditionally Mother of the Bride/Groom are very OT, and actually can be very frumpy. Enjoy your son’s wedding x

latedecember1963 · 14/07/2021 21:46

That's a lovely dress, Sixmonthson. Have a wonderful day!

Mulletsaremisunderstood · 14/07/2021 21:46

That dress is beautiful and summery, I'm sure you will look lovely OP and your son will be very proud.

R0SEMARY · 15/07/2021 10:21

My friend wore a black and white geometric patterned dress accessorised with red when she was MOB and she looked amazing ! It suited her personality much more that the traditional pastel chiffon.

I hope you have a lovely day .

jay55 · 15/07/2021 13:58

It's a lovely dress.

Best of Luck for the day.
