Are my trainers trendy?

belimoo · 27/06/2021 18:15

I haven't worn trainers since way before they became fashionable. I'm late 30's but a bit of a style luddite.

Today I dug out a pair of very very old Nikes to go on a walk in. I was shocked at how comfortable they are but would like to know where they score on the awful to cool range.

Not to say this is the only important thing and I will wear them anyway but I have honestly no idea and would value feedback from those in the know 🙏

0% 🤣

If they’re just for walking they’re fine, if you want to go for the floaty dress and bright white trainer fashion- no.

They are just normal trainers, they aren’t really the current trendy ones you were for fashion. I’m guessing you may have surely known this?

Confused
HollyBollyBooBoo · 27/06/2021 18:20

Fine for walking not as a pair you'd wear with dresses etc.

Honestly, no I didn't know this Confused

I don't wear trainers and have paid no attention to which ones are fashionable. To me, some of them look really awful but they're clearly popular. I don't love mine but don't think they're hideous so I don't think it's strange that I honestly don't know whether they fashionable or not.

These are the sort that are trendy, they are less trainer like.

I think so! But they're not new are they?

Thanks! No, they certainly are not new! Somebody told my mum a while ago that her very old trainers were now the height of fashion and she had no idea, so perhaps that's shaped my hopeful post about my old ones 😆

I'm appreciating from this thread that I haven't had the same fortune!

Thanks for the suggestion. I guess as a follow up question - how do you swing to like new fashions? Does it happen naturally or do you work at it?

I generally don't like the look of trainers but I wish I did. They're not only fashionable but also really comfortable. It just seems to take me ages to get on board with new styles and I don't know why. As you can see, I'm only just finally starting to try with trainers and getting it wrong!

I took ages to covert to skinny jeans and now I have a wardrobe full of them and have learnt that they're passé.

How do I become more fashion forward? Or should I just accept that I'm too old to be trendy now (tongue in cheek, there are many older, more fashionable people than me)

They are very fashionable for teens as they all love Y2K styles, whereas 30+ year olds prefer a Vega or pump style trainer.

So you can be down with the kids and wear with pride, but your friends might not approve Grin

Orf1abc · 27/06/2021 18:36

If trendy means appealing to the younger market, then Superga are not trendy. They're a Mumsnet staple uniform piece, they go with pretty much anything and they're comfy. I like them, but I am far from trendy!

Well this has made my day, thank you Smile

The 'trying to hard to be down with the kids' look isn't exactly what I was aiming for but I'm just happy to know they wouldn't make me a complete laughing stock.

Vans sk8 hi are what I'm wearing with dressing at the minute, plain white ones

Dresses* 🙄

AnxietyForever · 27/06/2021 18:42

Sorry these aren't trendy at all, maybe for the gym only.

This.

I’m 40 and I love Superga. But my 18 year old dd wouldn’t dream of wearing them. But then that’s okay - I don’t want to wear what she wears and vice versa! “Trendy” brands of trainers - Air Force 1s and chunky white ones basically. Reebok club cs are also “in” I think that’s what they’re called anyway….! Anything superga, Stan smith or veja are basically “in” for people 35 plus. I’ll get slated for that and people will pile on telling me how awful I am for saying that but hey ho.

belimoo · 27/06/2021 18:50

Thanks @Bagelsandbrie that's a helpful explanation.

I don't like the chunky style and I'm late 30's so I guess I should be looking at the 'older' brands mentioned.

Tbh though, I don't particularly like any of them and was just hoping I could get away with wearing this old pair while I wait for fashion to change. It seems though that I need to change my outlook and embrace something new...

You could start a new fashion though ! For all you know they may be the next big thing !
Wear the trainers ! Just be you !

babbaloushka · 27/06/2021 18:59

Showed DD17 and she said they are in, Dad trainers are a fashion thing apparently.

babbaloushka · 27/06/2021 19:02

Her follow up is that she would pair them with black or light wash denim shorts and a bright blue sweater tucked up around the waist, just in case you want to dress like a 17yo Grin.

I don't think they're that bad, reminiscent of Princess Diana for some reason.

troppibambini6 · 27/06/2021 19:09

Actually they are incredibly trendy! Dad trainers are the coolest trainers at the mo with the teens I know!

mizu · 27/06/2021 19:09

Yep, my DDs -16 and 17 - would agree re shorts and jumper combo. Paired with trainers or Crocs with socks Grin

Wide leg trousers / jeans with little tops and checked shirts.

DD was eyeing up my Birkenstocks but said they look too prison like HmmGrinGrin

They are basically wearing what I wore in the 90s.

At 48, I love Teva sandals - currently looking at the leopard print ones but they are £80 Shock- with a TOAST dress or wide leg jeans.
