If Monty Don was a woman....

Where would he shop?

I really want some lovely cotton or linen stuff, in my mind I see a loose fitting linen jumpsuit with scrappy straps and a side zip. It wouldn't be 'fashion' or ridiculously wide or show a silly amount of side boob. Simple and not humongous.

I search everywhere and can never find what im after, I can't be fussed with trends, but want some more choice. I used to like toast but they fit me horribly and the colour palettes don't suit me.

Are there any shops I don't know about that can do me a Monty style wardrobe? Natural fabrics that could see me gardening or walking by the lake, etc...

I love that Observer piece, especially his support for high rise trousers, which I might go and post on all the low rise threads Wink And to say that in 2005, when the whole nation was suffering from arse crack syndrome, is quite something .

I'm beginning to think he might be right about jeans too: 'absurd items of clothing' Grin

I think we need Monty for an S&B webchat.

banivani · 11/08/2021 12:02

Monty did start his career in costume jewellery didn't he, so sartorial connection there!

Edmontine · 20/08/2021 09:10

Hmm ... If only I took more notice of men’s clothing I’d be better able to discern the provenance of these clothes.

Darcy Clothing started as a theatrical costumier and has moved into retail. Accurate replicas of soft jackets, shirts and waistcoats in 19th and early 20th style - think Lady Chatterley's Lover or Peaky Blinders. Mostly mens clothing but the small sizes are good for oversized women's clothing. www.darcyclothing.com/

Saw this and thought of you all:

t-o-o-g-o-o-d.com/collections/womenswear

Whole collection apparently garden-inspired. I do love the long dark green dress - though I daresay it would look less swoonsome if not so beautifully photographed.

(For the avoidance of doubt I am not suggesting anyone should rush out and spend these amounts of money on clothes. They’re just rather intriguing to look at, in the context of this thread.)

grownup2 · 19/02/2022 17:44

Yes @Edmontine lovely but I also think: in real life? I had just been thinking about how to find nice timeless gathered neck garments and saw this t-o-o-g-o-o-d.com/collections/womenswear/products/the-poet-top-smooth-cotton-birchbark Surely it must be possible to devise a simple pattern for something like it...

Floisme · 19/02/2022 18:14

So pleased to see this thread again - one of my all time favourites.

Yes, and this is where I would personally depart from excusing a price tag Grin Whilst I tend to support and encourage purchasing ethical and higher quality garments, especially when this leads to enabling smaller business to thrive, I draw the line at £430 for a very easy to knock up cotton top. And dry clean only..........with cotton and summer armpits? Nopey dopey!

I have a friend who could recreate this quite easily, and for far, far less expense. I might also prefer to commission someone on Etsy to create that top.

I find it difficult to eke out the genuine brands and creators from the lifestyle-extortion 'trend pushers' (Toast for example, and the excessive mark-up on items distributed via Plumo). I am happy to fork out for something that I will treasure, is unique and hard working, but a line has to be drawn somewhere.

I might be an outlier but I really can't excuse the cost of the clothing at Cabbages & Roses either. Many of the garments look badly finished and shapeless (and not in a good way iyswim?), many knocked up in China with what appear to be thin, insubstantial fabric.

I think you have to really delve in and research this stuff thoroughly.

ConfusedParticle · 20/02/2022 12:22

And on the subject of Monty, I mentioned in another thread that I had been enjoying 'Life in Squares', a series portraying the lives and loves of the Bloomsbury Group. Many of the men's clothes reminded me of Mr Don.
A wonderful series, I personally adored the female wardrobe dept!

Oh, those clothes are glorious, ConfusedParticle! May have to start watching the show.

Edmontine · 29/10/2022 09:45

Resurrecting - partly because there have been so many references to this thread elsewhere on S&B, but mostly because my early morning perusing of the FT alerted me to this site

wrightanddoyle.com

which was surely made for this thread. If it’s been mentioned before, 🤷🏽‍♀️. I don’t remember having seen it anywhere before!

StarlightLady · 29/10/2022 10:38

If Monty don was a woman he would be Charlie Dimmock. 😂

Edmontine · 29/10/2022 11:53

Suspect we did that at the beginning of the thread, @StarlightLady !

But I was rather hoping for opinions on a skirt on the site I linked …

faustina · 29/10/2022 13:34

That is a wonderful looking site @Edmontine - I hadn't seen it either. Perhaps it's new?

XingMing · 29/10/2022 13:44

I have seen another website featuring the submariner's sweater, but I love the smock coat. Just not in brown....

PestorPeston · 02/11/2022 19:33

@Edmontine I'm afraid the skirt is average and the price is not.
I am biased because I have a similar skirt which cost a heck of a lot less (about a decade ago).
Wouldn't be too hard to make either.

SuffolkBargeWoman · 02/11/2022 19:47

Good Lord @Edmontine , I can't tell what any of the clothes on that website look like! They're all photographed at dusk from a distance, or is that just me?
And they can't spell propagate.

Edmontine · 02/11/2022 19:55

Ha! Years ago when the Internet was new I once emailed a website (possibly a perfume shop) to point out some poor spelling. Resigned to it now …

And I’ve forgotten which skirt it was!

banivani · 07/11/2022 19:10

I am afraid that Wright and Doyle score quite highly on the nonsenseometer with this:

"Wright and Doyle is an interdisciplinary (sic) brand drawing on principles (aye, so ye do) of a strong visual (visual!) relationship between workwear, objects (objects! no precision), landscape and garden.
This concept combines curated (sic sic sic) pieces which are balanced in their simplicity as well as their form and function."

We definitely need this thread back on the go for the winter season! Less linen, more wool, perhaps?

I'm struggling to locate decent items since the pandemic, and especially since the prices of so many goods have shot up.

Has anyone seen Cabbages&Roses in the flesh? I do like the more subtle versions of their styling - wool coats, stripes and flecked knits, but the samples I have seen on ebay look terrible, even new.

I am a bit stuck right now, and whilst I prefer to spend more on long lasting items, some of the prices are simply prohibitive. I'm happy to fork out a couple of times a year, but yikes!

Edmontine · 22/11/2022 15:28

I’m getting heaps of promotional emails from Skall Studio at the moment. Lovely looking knitwear, but mostly wouldn’t suit my colouring.

(I don’t mind ethical producers charging a fair price for good quality clothes. If only I could make accurate judgements on what is ethical or fair.)
