If Monty Don was a woman....

Where would he shop?

I really want some lovely cotton or linen stuff, in my mind I see a loose fitting linen jumpsuit with scrappy straps and a side zip. It wouldn't be 'fashion' or ridiculously wide or show a silly amount of side boob. Simple and not humongous.

I search everywhere and can never find what im after, I can't be fussed with trends, but want some more choice. I used to like toast but they fit me horribly and the colour palettes don't suit me.

Are there any shops I don't know about that can do me a Monty style wardrobe? Natural fabrics that could see me gardening or walking by the lake, etc...

Those were the days @Wbeezer
That strawberry pink 60s chiffon floor length dress that I chopped to thigh length...

Edmontine · 06/07/2021 21:19

Are there no other stockists?

Wbeezer · 06/07/2021 23:24

Unfortunately not. I'm really bad for being indecisive about purchases so this happens a lot. I was also on the thread about women neglecting themselves and managed to make myself buy a couple of new things on the back of that but it looks like I'm slipping back into old habits again.

Edmontine · 07/07/2021 09:50

I'm the same. But between miserliness and indecision I've come to terms with the fact that nineteen out of every twenty things I fall in love with on-screen will never actually arrive in my wardrobe.

In fact I have a whole other imaginary wardrobe of things I've missed out on. In my head I'm quite staggeringly well dressed ...

Edmontine · 07/07/2021 09:54

(Dang ... Just realised I've name-changed since my earlier posts on this thread. No sock puppeting intended, MNHQ!)

ConfusedParticle · 25/07/2021 13:57

Does anyone else think that this particular aesthetic might be somewhat dependent upon place, though?

There are some locales where I might not feel quite right donning my Don garbs, and yet others practically call for it.

I always think our immediate environment has a say in how we clothe ourselves, regardless our fantasy wardrobe. I can be quite annoying. For instance, I used to live in a very wet and windy, rural area where most people buried themselves in wax jackets, long raincoats and dubarry boots. Whilst Don-type clothing wouldn't not have 'looked' remotely out of place, much of the year would have resulted in you dragging around drenched floppy linen and the necessity for a pair of bloomers to counteract the volatile gales.

I am a mixture of both myself, the laid back cottage garden in summer, but pretty much mountain warehouse in winter Blush

ConfusedParticle · 25/07/2021 13:59

And I think I meant to say, would this work in a small greater manchester suburb where everyone else is is wearing either north face fashion togs or the office-sensible synthetics of, say, Next?

You'd fairly stand out like a fancy little mushroom, .....not that I'd care;)

We should come back to this thread in a couple of months to share some autumn/winter recommendations 😃

Edmontine · 25/07/2021 15:58

.

Coniferhedge · 25/07/2021 17:33

I love autumn and winter, especially the clothes. I’m completely over summer stuff now and can’t wait for the new season to get into shops and on websites.

Edmontine · 25/07/2021 18:05

Yes - I'm rolling my eyes at broderie anglaise blouses now, no matter how reduced in price. And am pretty certain I can manage the rest of the Summer in last year's (or last five years') footwear. Took delivery of my first A/W purchase last week and am eying possible Winter perfumes.

TeardropImplodes · 25/07/2021 22:43

@herecomesthsun @MayIDestroyYou Droopy and Browns by Angel Holmes (?) - my mum had a wedding vision of me in a big white frock, a D&B fitted me perfectly but drained all the colour out. I went for a gold silk midi almost 50s with edwardian chestnut leather boots (skates removed) it was wonderful.
I also had a fantastic riding style skirt and probably four waistcoats style tops. Pregnancy pushed my rib cage out an I sold a few off 😢

I do dress like A drag version of Monty don, I have some ancient Old Town & Toast , 20 years! Dark longline denim, sailor style trousers, bit of ankle and a silk top / lightweight jumper. I am tempted by Niwaki ninja boots .....

Have actually just bought some Cos for a city holiday explaining to my friend that it's not a betrayal just being fit for purpose. The shoes and coat are probably key to this!

Coo - that's a labour of love, Fingerbobs. Thank you. Though I'd personally prefer that some of those remain a secret between me and my bank account.

But I came to say - saw this (just now) and thought if you, OP! There's a video clip too.

Floisme · 27/07/2021 11:43

Thank you Fingerbobs - that's far more useful than any work I've got done this morning!

Definitely agree, this thread needs to remain in process.
Edmontine · 07/08/2021 11:09

Edmontina Don goes onstage to collect an award.😍 (Scroll down for full reveal of unutterable loveliness.)

Sorry, it’s a bit far from allotment-wear - but I just found this dress and gave posted it on another thread, where I can guarantee it will not be appreciated.

Sigh ... I have some non-gardening work to complete, which I’ve been avoiding. I may use this beautiful frock as a spur to effort.

Edmontine · 07/08/2021 11:33

However ... The thing that arrived a couple of weeks ago was this jumper - in a rust brown colour. (Pre-ordered in Spring, not yet on website.) It manages to be wonderfully soft and ridiculously crunchy at the same time. I want to skip all the intervening years of ‘best’, ‘less best’, ‘casual’, and proceed straight to ‘only for gardening’. It’s going to be just perfect with some eight wale cords - if only I had a derelict garden to remake over Winter.

If Monty Don was a woman....
Athenajm80 · 07/08/2021 11:51

For those of you who don't know the style, www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2005/dec/04/shopping.gardens

I love his descriptions of clothing

Edmontine · 07/08/2021 12:06

A tweed jacket is really good and I have a number of old ripped ones I often wear at home. They are thornproof, warm, showerproof and have pockets. They won't let me wear them on telly because they say it looks too patrician. I have yet to work out if that is patronising or right, but I meekly demur. From the Guardian article.

Thanks, Athenajam.

I realised a long time ago that one of the joys of gardening is that it’s where I wear all my most favourite cloths - ancient tweed jackets being first amongst them.

banivani · 07/08/2021 18:35

A Nygårdsanna tip if you ever want to holiday in her home region in Sweden - she apparently has a lovely sort of outletty shop there. I have a colleague with a cabin nearby who always returns from holiday with something gorgeous.

Love this thread!
