How much do you spend on beauty stuff?

I think I'm pretty low maintenance but even so it adds up.

Every 6 weeks I have:

Haircut £53
Eyebrow shape and tint, eyelash tint £25

I pay about £12 for a fairly ordinary moisturiser, £36 for a "nice" foundation £15 for concealer, plus blusher and tinted lip balm. Probably around £30pm on average

So that's total of say £90 pm, which seems a lot to me even though I can afford it comfortably. I quite fancy a regular manicure, but it seems a ridiculous extravagance.

People who do all the treatments, facials, waxing, nails, hair colour, fake tan, full make up etc must be spending a fortune. How do "ordinary" people manage it?

I don’t spend anything at all on skincare! I’ve always had really good skin so I never got into the habit. But now I’m in my 40s and I really ought to start up a regime just to keep it in good condition. I envisage spending on average about £10pm going forward. I can’t stand the feeling of foundation/concealer/powder on my skin so I don’t use it, so that cuts out a lot of product and cost.

I used to have a haircut every year and then just let it grow out again, but my hair is thinning quite a bit now so it’ll need to be done more often, probably every 2 months as I’d like to keep it shorter. About £20pm on average, I expect.

I used to get my nails done every two weeks (gel manicure) but now I’ve got a gel lamp at home so I just do it myself. That and the kit/varnishes cost £115 I think and it paid for itself within a couple of months. I’ll probably pick up a couple of colours later in the year for about £15.

I’m trying not to buy any more make up at all until I’ve used up what already have (which is quite a lot) but I might crack and get a lipstick in the Black Friday sales.

I’m hoping I might be able to save for a bag in the Mulberry Boxing Day/January sales. We’ll see - delayed gratification isn’t my strong suit. That’ll likely be my one big S&B purchase for 2022.

JuliaLou · 26/06/2021 12:02

£85 for my cut colour approx every 3 months might average out to 5 a year though as if I'm going on holiday or to an event it might be a few weeks early.
£10 eyebrow wax roughly every 5 or so weeks.
I've been fortunate so far with my skin so nothing and I don't wear makeup so nothing.. maybe £20 a year for a odds and ends.
I use loads of conditioner so I'll say £10 a month for my shampoo conditioner.

66babe · 26/06/2021 15:49

£36 quid every month on cut and tone
Roots done every other month takes it up to 65
£20 for half hour back massage - wouldn't go without that
£10 for eyebrow shape and tint, moustache wax
£ 28 for pedicure every other month too
Not much on make up as I have tonnes .. and hardly wear any of it
£17 on Boots No 7 intelligent foundation
£10 on whatever the latest wonder mascara is
£2 on a tinted rouge Vaseline

How do "ordinary" people manage it?

I cut and colour my own hair. The cut is pretty easy, I have long layered hair. The colour is too, I make up a tea, if camomile, turmeric, coffee and redbush and just saturate clean dry hair with it and leave in. It stains pretty well and will last a couple of washes at least. Nails, I favour the natural look, just moisturise and keep them trimmed. Eyebrows, I pluck any stray hairs myself and use eyebrow pencil to colour in greys. Skincare is mainly from Holland and Barrett's and Amazon. I use a Dr Organics skin brightening cream to get rid of pigmentation, an organic Garnier eye cream with salicylic acid, a peptide cream and sunscreen on my face. Dr Organics body lotion and a Hemp oil on my body. For hair removal I shave.

I wear a hat and big sunglasses also in the summer and I'm quite happy with how my skin has aged at nearly 50. I have a chin exerciser plunger thing and run and do resistance exercises which means my body is slimmer and more toned than it was when I was younger which has added to my confidence.

grasstreeleaf · 26/06/2021 17:57

And makeup is powder, eyeshadow, mascara, blusher, brow pencil, lip salve and lipstick. Mainly Vegan / Organic / Mineral makeup brands from Amazon. Lasts ages and is pretty inexpensive now.

Pinchoftums · 26/06/2021 18:01

About £10.
DH cuts my very easy to cut hair and I colour it. Bit of make up. Pluck my own brows. Don't use facial stuff as allergic to most. Use cheap shampoo but my hair is quite shiny from the colour. Not much to wax so shave my own legs etc.
It's not my biggest priority (travel is) so tend to save for that instead.

grasstreeleaf · 26/06/2021 18:09

Oh and 'treatment' wise I dry body brush and treat myself to a cold bath and then a warm one after my run. Extremely good for the circulation and skin and I feel fantastic afterwards. Very relaxing. Miss it when I don't do it.

Fairdosmun · 26/06/2021 18:13

I get a half decent moisturiser, get my hair cut twice a year with no dyeing.

No manicures or beauty treatments in general.

Hardly ever bother shaving or waxing.

So not much at all really.

If you count all toiletries and very occasional make up then it can't be more than 20 a month.

I'm pretty low maintenance really.

Helps that I'm a natural beauty I guess.

Eleoura · 26/06/2021 18:20

Box dye myself monthly- £6

No7 foundation, maybelline pressed powder, mascara and eyeliner- maybe every 4-6mths- £34

Used to have salon gel nails every 3 weeks pre-covid. Now buy glue on ones I do myself and they are about £5 a month!

There is a hairdressing school near me, so a wash, cut and blow dry is £10.

Londonnight · 26/06/2021 18:24

I don't wear make up, so no costs there.

I use a basic moisturiser, no other skin care. I am in my 60's and skin is very good.
Hair cut about once a year.

So very little monthly costs. Probably £40 per year in total including haircut.

Cornishmumofone · 26/06/2021 18:32

I'm like @Londonnight

I don't wear make up or use moisturiser regularly. I have my hair cut once a year for about £40. I buy fairly ordinary shampoo and conditioner, so that's maybe £24 a year.

I occasionally buy perfume, but that's only every few years.

alanrickmanspetcat · 26/06/2021 18:36

Full body wax: £35
Nails & eyebrows: £20
Hair averages out at £40 pm (quarterly at £120 a go)

£95.. quite pleased with that

MilduraS · 26/06/2021 18:36

I spend £180 on my cut and colour every 3 months (balayage on shoulder length hair). Huge extravagance but I have very fine thinning hair and the salon had great reviews. If anything my hair has seemed healthier despite the bleach.

I've cut down on makeup since working partially from home but even before I was buying boots foundation every 3 months and a new mascara every 6 months or so. Everything else seems to last forever- blusher, eyeshadow etc. So probably averaged £15 a month there.

For skincare I seem to go on a splurge every 6 months or so. I'm prone to acne so average £6 a month for tretinoin on prescription then probably another £100 on a splurge. A year ago I discovered Facetheory and their products are brilliant for a mid-range budget. The eye cream is £13 at the moment and would easily last a year. The serums are similarly priced and last over 6 months.

LucindaT73 · 26/06/2021 20:34

I have never had a manicure, pedicure or anything else in my life.

I have no idea how much I spend in total.

I pay £75 for a haircut every 12 weeks.
£125 -ish for cut and colour 2 x a year in addition.

Make up is mainly Bobbi Brown but I only replace when it's used up and my biggest splurge is foundation maybe 3 times a year.
Blusher, lippie and eye shadow last a year or more.

Moisturiser, (£15) cleanser, (£15) sun block (£35) etc works out as maybe replacing one of them every 3 months.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 26/06/2021 20:39

My hair costs about 10 a week, including colours and cuts. I have a CACI eye treatment every 6 weeks, 35. I am starting having facials again, about 40 every 6 weeks. And a back massage 28, every 6 weeks. Helps me sleep. Don't want to even start adding up serums etc, but it is something I ask Santa for now, so I feel less extravagant about that.

Miseryisabutterfly · 26/06/2021 21:19

I cut my own hair, do my own nails and tan (subtly) , but do splurge on makeup. I’d imagine it’s about €1200 per year (including skincare, tan, makeup, shampoo & conditioner, nail polish etc).

Miseryisabutterfly · 26/06/2021 21:26

I feel like I’ve overestimated 😂

RoseMartha · 26/06/2021 21:37

Added all my things up works out about £15 a month.

Signoramarella · 26/06/2021 21:40

Nails, waxing every 3 weeks about 70£. Make up , creams etc about 50£ a month. Hair about 25 £ every 6 weeks. I am quite high maintenance, its just who I am.

JMAngel1 · 26/06/2021 21:52

I daren’t add it up Grin

Miseryisabutterfly · 26/06/2021 21:58

@JMAngel1 don’t do it 😂

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 26/06/2021 22:27

Hair cut every five weeks - £55
Eyebrows every three weeks - £10
Do own nails etc, buy skincare, makeup, perfume as and when - I imagine it averages out about £50 a month-ish. This month I bought Clarins moisturiser, MAC mascara, and an SPF 50 spray for over makeup, but I can’t see me needing to buy anything in July.

StevieNix · 26/06/2021 23:07

Cut my own hair,
Use a £8 L’Oréal box hair dye every 8 weeks,
Paint my own nails,
Buy a bottle of st Moriz fake tan every 8 weeks,
Do my own eyebrows,
Shave or use hair removal cream so not paying for waxes etc,
Do a face mask and hair mask once per week (maybe adds up to £10 every 42 months or so?)
Cheap moisturiser and serum both from Aldi,
Cheap shampoo (Aussie ripoff) from Aldi,
Use £10 L’Oréal mascara (replace every 3 months?), £10 foundation (again maybe every 3 months?) and then use up my stash of makeup (I have mix of Mac, urban decay - mainly been bought for presents and also cheapy brands)

Tinysalmonswimminginastream · 26/06/2021 23:11

I'm totally low maintenance: I cut and colour my own hair, paint my own nails, do my own eyebrows, remove hair myself, I don't do beauty subscriptions, buy tretinoin from an online pharmacy for cheap, no botox or anything like that, relatively cheap skin care....

And I still feel like I spend quite a lot on beauty stuff! I always wonder how 'high maintenance' women afford it all if you are not earning loads?!

Willwebebuyingnumber11 · 26/06/2021 23:19

£85 every 12 weeks for hair
£20 every 3 weeks for lashes
£18 every 3 weeks for gel fingernails - always french
£12 every 6 weeks for gel toenails - always french
I tint and pluck my own brows as I am never happy when they’re salon tinted
£60 full body massage once a month.

My skincare I buy probably every 8 weeks and it costs £72 for my products.
I don’t wear foundation very often but I use estee Lauder double wear which is about £30 I think.
Chanel healthy glow bronzing cream - lasts me around 3 months around £40
Vaseline lip tint is about £2

I like having my products & treatments as I don’t like wearing makeup often and am regularly complimented on my skin.
