How much do you spend on beauty stuff?

I think I'm pretty low maintenance but even so it adds up.

Every 6 weeks I have:

Haircut £53
Eyebrow shape and tint, eyelash tint £25

I pay about £12 for a fairly ordinary moisturiser, £36 for a "nice" foundation £15 for concealer, plus blusher and tinted lip balm. Probably around £30pm on average

So that's total of say £90 pm, which seems a lot to me even though I can afford it comfortably. I quite fancy a regular manicure, but it seems a ridiculous extravagance.

People who do all the treatments, facials, waxing, nails, hair colour, fake tan, full make up etc must be spending a fortune. How do "ordinary" people manage it?

OP posts:
DaisyWaldron · 26/06/2021 23:43

Haircut £45 around 4 times a year, so £180 in total.
Hair dye approx £60 a year.
Facial skin care £70 a year
Body cream £22 a year
Foot cream £30 a year
Make-up £60 a year

So around £35 a month, which seems like a lot now that I've added it all up.

NowWhatUsernameShallIHave · 26/06/2021 23:49

I don’t know how much it costs altogether but I do spend quite a lot on skincare and makeup but that’s my indulgence

I don’t go to get my nails or hair dyed. I have a a pixie cut and the hairdresser comes to my house every 2 months and costs me £25

I do my eyebrows myself as I don’t trust anyone else as well as hair removal.

I’d say my makeup purchases are affordable and high end but probably 75% affordable ie boots or Superdrug

I don’t drink or smoke and don’t buy designer clothes

moonbedazzled · 27/06/2021 00:16

But how old is everyone? I've noticed that as my age goes up, so does the cost of upkeep.

OhDear2200 · 27/06/2021 00:29

I find it interesting the number of people who cut their own hair. I used to religiously go to the hair dresses every 5 weeks for a cut and dye. But because of lockdown I started doing it myself and I really can’t tell the difference. In fact I’ve think I cut it better! I have really curly hair and hairdressers are
Crap at cutting it.

My big spurge is getting my nails done every 2 weeks. I love it!!!! Such a treat and that is something I just can’t do myself. That is £20 every 2 weeks.

I buy good shampoo and conditioner because of curly girl method.

Make up wise I used to spend lots but I really don’t think there is much difference between a £30 foundation and a £15 foundation. Surely the cheaper versions are
Just rip offs of the more expensive ones?

My other treat is nice perfume. Love an expensive scent.

Time40 · 27/06/2021 01:36

Probably around £20 a month. And I'm dead glamorous!

purpledagger · 27/06/2021 09:20

Ive worked out that I spend about £100 a month, which seems like a huge amount, but I think I'm pretty low maintenance and keep quite a close eye on my budget.

Skincare - I use The Ordinary/Hylamide. My products cost £100 altogether but last 3-5 months, so pretty good value. Plus I stock up when it's on offer.

My hair costs £110, every 2-4 months for a cut and colour. I use a mobile hairdresser and would be more expensive if I went to a salon.

Waxing/laser. Laser is under £200, with a Groupon but would be £1000+ otherwise. Waxing is a cheapy salon and £20-£30 every 6 weeks or so. Eyebrow threading is £3.

I haven't included shampoo, soap etc in that above.

I do some things myself. at home eg pedicure, hair treatments, face masks, body brushing. I don't get manicures, fillers, eyelash treatments. I get facial and salon treatments for birthday/Christmas.

Phyllis321 · 27/06/2021 09:24

I’ve never spent that much. really. I’m 49 and my skin is good mainly I think because I’m very pale and don’t ever tan.
Skin - £10 a month
Hair - £10 a month
Cosmetics- £5 a month
Very approximate.

Ninkanink · 27/06/2021 09:25

@OhDear2200 I used to cut my own hair when I was young - I had quite wavy hair then and it always looked perfectly nice when I did it myself. But the waves have dropped out over the years and my hair has lost some volume so I’m not sure I could pull it off. I also want it shorter than I could probably manage myself. It’s a shame though because I’d much rather not have to pay to have it done!

AuntieMarys · 27/06/2021 09:28

In my 60s.
Hair cut and coloured every 5 weeks £120
Nails every 10 days £25
Facial every 6 weeks £85
I use Dermalogica and buy salon sizes of everything. Don't wear much makeup.

DancingKitten · 27/06/2021 09:29

I do all my own, hair colour, cut, hair removal, eyebrows, tan, pedicure/manicure. I really like No7 Advanced skincare, I buy the special offer (£75) for a big box every 4-6 months. I buy makeup in supermarkets, except for a few expensive brand treats such as highlighter. But all the basics (mascara, lipstick) are inexpensive.

I've had literally a drawer full of all the big brands of every type of makeup product from lipliner to concealer to powder, I don't mean a few bits, and honestly? I don't find them any the better over time. They aren't miracle products. Have you ever looked at anyone and thought "Oooh that mascara must have cost £30?" or "Wow that's definitely a £20 lipstick?" People really just don't see it so we might as well save our £££ for £.

Possibly foundation is the only makeup that people really would notice but I still haven't found my high-end holy grail despite buying full size bottles of at least 8 very high end brands over the years, not just samples. If I really loved it I'd still be wearing it but performance wise it might as well be the £10 one I currently wear, which performs very well.

TodClarty · 27/06/2021 09:29

Lockdown made me realise I didn't need to spend as much.

Hair down from 6 weeks to 12
Colour at home
I did upgrade products to Liz Earle which are doing my hair and skin a lot of good

I think my spend must be around £70.

When life returns to normal I will probably get eyebrows threaded so add a tenner to that.

BojackHorsewoman · 27/06/2021 09:33

It ebbs and flows for me. Sometimes I'll have spray tans every couple of weeks, but other times not. I actually don't do anything regularly, as I go off the idea sometimes. But just lately I've had so many treatments. I was feeling rough after lockdown and felt like a good investment. Not personal trainer counts as beauty, then more again.

I think, having tried out loads of things lately, I'm sticking with finger nails (gel) and hair (semi oerm colour and cut).

My DH hates my new eyebrows and said never to get them again 🤣. My tan wasn't as good recently and think I could probably do as good a job, of the bits that show, myself. Probably only need a full spray tan for public bikini wearing weather, which never happens here. Bikini wax..not worth it for me. Ditto pedicures.

I went a bit mad and tried Botox recently too and not sure that's for me. Freaked me out too much worrying about bruising or ptosis and I'm still in my thirties so a bit unnecessary.

So I don't know, in brief, but likely to be;

£120 every 6-8 weeks on hair
£35 every 2-3 weeks on nails

So about £37.50 every week total, averaged out.

Demortuisnilnisibonum · 27/06/2021 09:43

Hair trim 15 every 7 weeks
Nails 4 times a year 25
Eyebrows every 3 months 10 (I do them myself in between)
Moisturiser 15 twice a year
Night eye cream 20 twice a year
Night retinol 25 twice a year
Day eye cream 15 every six months
Serum 60 per year
Foundation 27 every six months
Lipstick 20 annually
Mascara 20 per year (new one every 6 months)

Comes to around £500/600 per year, so around £50 per month.
Thinking of getting Botox too.

Ninkanink · 27/06/2021 09:56

Actually one thing I’d like to start using is a good bb cream - or whatever the current equivalent is being marketed as... Anyone have any good recommendations? (If it’s okay to derail your thread slightly @Backhills).

Ninkanink · 27/06/2021 09:58

Oh another beauty purchase I’ve made was a Lumea. Best purchase ever. I do all my own hair removal now and it’s so much better. It’s also paid for itself by now.

BojackHorsewoman · 27/06/2021 10:00

@Demortuisnilnisibonum, although I don't think I'll do it again, my Botox experience was absolutely fine (so far). It was not painful at all. No bruising despite me doing a couple of things I shouldn't have re aftercare (communication error with my practitioner).

I didn't know you are not meant to have any alcohol at all the day before or after Botox and also that strenuous exercise has to be avoided for a day or two. I had wine the night before and then after, before I saw an email from practitioner with guidance and had sweaty PT session about 30 hours after procedure. So those are the things I'd know for next time, if there is a next time. Also, it doesn't work for about two weeks and then you go back for review. I might actually skip the review or won't have any more put in, as I don't think I want it again. Really glad I tried it though, as I was curious. Definitely think if I was really bothered by my wrinkles and was spending a lot on other treatments, I'd go with Botox as the results are clear and when you take the cost of other treatments which aren't so effective into account, it doesn't work out that expensive. Circa £300 every four months or so.

Don't know your skin tone obviously but I like this one:

seamagik.com/bb-cream-50ml-diamond-range.html

Ninkanink · 27/06/2021 10:04

Thank you @Pengwyn! I just assumed bb cream would come in at least 3 or 4 shades kind of like concealers etc so I didn’t think to specify. I’m fair with warm undertones. Do you think it’s likely it would suit me?

I think so, it seems quite adaptable

I'm medium with cool undertones

It's really good, seems to enhance rather than cover so my skin still looks like skin just a bit smoothed out!

Ninkanink · 27/06/2021 10:08

Thank you, it sounds great. I like the look of the rest of their products too.

iduno · 27/06/2021 11:07

Hardly anything compared to yours 😂

I have long dark hair so it doesn't require colouring and only needs cut a couple of times a year. Usually about £20-£30 for haircut twice a year.

I don't get any treatments done unless I'm going abroad on holiday. I might get a lash lift about £30-£35. Hardly ever get my nails done it's way too expensive. I have a machine for doing my own gel nails.

Makeup I do buy regularly and like to try new things. I'm not sure how much I spend on it maybe £20 a month on average. Sometimes a lot more some months nothing. Skincare I terribly neglect 🙈

SwimBaby · 27/06/2021 11:13

£700 per year on botox and fillers
Hair colour, I do myself so £5 per month
Hair cut £45 every 2 months
Pedicure every 2 months £22
Eyebrows i do myself
Treatments such a massage or facial about twice a year for £100 a time.
Skin care , not too bad a mixture of Nivea and Q10 and Clinique.
Make up, cheap makes such as collection, I don’t like the feel of foundation.
Eyebrows the shape and tint myself.

Demortuisnilnisibonum · 28/06/2021 07:12

@BojackHorsewoman, thank you, that’s really helpful.

ExConstance · 28/06/2021 10:35

Hair cut every 6 weeks and colouring every 12 works out at £55 per month. Make up maybe £20 per month, has to be Clinique because of allergies and you get lots of free samples to eke it out. I pluck my eyebrows myself, fortunately they are not too unruly. waxing adds another £20 or so. £95 intotal, and worth every penny.

ArabeI · 28/06/2021 11:19

I only have my hair trimmed every 3-6 months. It used to be six months but it started reaching my waist too quickly which find impractical. So hair is cheap at £70-80 a time every few months.

I do my own manicure, but started to have a pedicure again at £25.00 every few weeks.

Though I do now regularly use Elasticizer and Olaplex and other similar products for hair.
Make up and skin care I do spend a lot of money on as I like premium brands like By Terry and Hourglass. I have no idea how much that all works out monthly, but I think it might exceed the amount I spend on clothes.

Considering botox in the future which might bump the cost up, but (fingers firmly crossed) I don't have any lines yet; I have one 'concentration' line which appears only now and then.
