Significant birthday necklace

Wombat24 · 22/06/2021 21:56

It's a very big birthday for me in a few months' time. I struggle to wear jewellery but fancy a nice diamond pendant. I don't go out anywhere, so I'd like it to be nice but not too fancy for everyday. Not poor, just don't do much!

Anyone had one made? Or can recommend a nice maker? TIA.

What is your budget?
Do you prefer white or yellow gold?

Wombat24 · 22/06/2021 22:24

Thinking around £1000 ish but actually have no clue. White gold or platinum but that might kill the budget. It's a balance, isn't it?

I prefer secondhand - just bought DD a 0.33 carat diamond solitaire pendant in white gold with heavy chain for less than a quarter of your budget - it would retail new for around 1k - it’s her 30th so hoping she’ll love it

LunaNorth · 22/06/2021 22:59

Rather lovely...

Cartier

Wombat24 · 22/06/2021 22:59

Like those ideas...will show DH in the morning. Thank you, both.

Happy with 2ndhand, like the idea of not wasting precious resources. I don't have much jewellery, so it's more about finding something to suit me, that I can wear. 😊

Yes, that is lovely.

JaceLancs where did you get yours from?

JaceLancs · 22/06/2021 23:19

@colouringindoors
holdenwood.co.uk/
This place - but I shop widely!
Last week was buying things in Lincolnshire - regularly trawl the Lanes in Brighton n lots in between
If you message me with your locality I’m happy to suggest a few antique fairs or centres nearby

I'd have this, for interest

If it's a simple solitaire type pendant you're after, I'd get a local jewellery designer to make you something unique.

This is very similar to one I’ve just bought DD

Sounds great!

Where from?

Cross post!

Cartier

This is obscenely overpriced just because it's from Cartier. An almost identical one from Tiffany with a very slightly larger diamond (.10 is still tiny btw) is far less than Cartier one. https://www.tiffany.co.uk/jewelry/necklaces-pendants/elsa-peretti-diamonds-by-the-yard-pendant-GRP02775/elsa-peretti-diamonds-by-the-yard-pendant-31895871

And that's still at a designer price. This is a very classic and simple design. It will never go out of style. If you like that check your local jewellers and you can also see if an independent local jeweller could make you one for even cheaper.

This diamond is double the size of the Cartier one and again far less £. So do your research and shop around! www.pragnell.co.uk/white-gold-brilliant-cut-diamond-necklace_1001769

I live out in the sticks and a shopping trip is a major undertaking, hence the asking here as the internet search tends to lead to the same people.

My nearest big cities are Manchester, Liverpool and Chester.

I was thinking maybe someone like Slack and Andrews in Manchester to make something (but only a few reviews) or the auction/vintage market. I like the shopping and research more than the getting/using usually, which is why I want it to be usable but nice. :-)

MadamBatty · 23/06/2021 13:49

I’d buy second hand. The mark up on jewellery is huge. Do you have any local auction houses?

Wombat24 · 23/06/2021 14:16

Some lovely ideas here, excellent, just the sort of inspiration I was after, thanks so much.

Judging value is hard tho, part art, part intrinsic cost of materials.

OP posts:
Wombat24 · 23/06/2021 14:18

We do have a local auction house, it's more garden and house clearance tho...with a bit of a grumpy auctioneer when he's onto his 6th strimmer of the day.

I might really get into collecting, this is fascinating!

bendmeoverbackwards · 23/06/2021 23:47

OP if you want something classic you can wear every day, I would definitely go for a diamond solitaire.
