Can you ever wear boots to a wedding?

I have bought a beautiful dress from Maje for a wedding.

uk.maje.com/en/ready-to-wear/collection/dresses/120roman/MFPRO01274.html?dwvar_MFPRO01274_color=P003

I’ve tried it on with the usual strappy sandals and because of the pattern and the swingy skirt and the sleeves the sandals just don’t look quite right.

I was wondering if I could ever team this dress with boots for a wedding. The wedding won’t be super formal I would say just normal levels of formality. I also don’t know what the weather will be like and I think a lot of it will take place outside.

I’m thinking of teaming it with these

uk.maje.com/en/shoes/collection/booties-and-boots/221forchains/MFACH00411.html?dwvar_MFACH00411_color=2517

I’ve bought these items and I think they look great together but am I just fooling myself that this is wedding attire?

@Iamthewombat

Have you just shown us a metallic lilac cowboy shoe boot? I fear that I have slipped into a fever dream.
Sorry

But, they're so wrong they are right.

Half an hour ago I didn't even know things like this existed.

Honestly, I was looking for a green pair similar to the ones in the OP

CheerfulBunny · 03/06/2021 22:41

That's such a pretty dress! Black boots would kill it stone dead though.

ILoveShula · 03/06/2021 23:28

Of course you can wear them. Wear what you like.

Ok so the boots idea is out. What about any of these? The top ones are like the model is wearing on the Maje site wearing the dress but again seems a bit casual for the wedding, but I can wear them after the wedding more.

What about something like this? They come in white and black

Actually, actually I really really like these

And I can get wear out of them afterwards? Sorry I know I keep going on about that but it’s important to me Smile

Yes I think those would be perfect.

Ninkanink · 04/06/2021 08:17

(The last pair you posted)

Iamthewombat · 04/06/2021 08:47

You are messing with our heads now, aren’t you OP? Showing us those Birkenstock style sandals. No no no!

The Whistles heels (although I’d get the green) and the & other stories heeled sandals are the best of the selection.

mocktail · 04/06/2021 08:58

I'd go for flat mules or sandals, in almost any colour but black. Or a low block-heeled sandal.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 04/06/2021 09:02

The Whistles heels look a bit dated/dull to me, and as if they might get scuffed quickly. The flat sandal things are not good.

I like these All Saints boots. They are casual but heeled and could work if the wedding is informal. They have quite an 80s, Westwood vibe.

These aren't really my scene, but they are a bargain and might work John Lewis

Cocolapew · 04/06/2021 09:06

I don't see why to can't wear them Confused
Unless there's a dress code forbidding it wear what you want.

Bitofachinwag · 04/06/2021 09:08

Only if it's an outdoor wedding (and it's very cold)

Ninkanink · 04/06/2021 09:10

Black just isn’t right with that dress! Keep it light.

Court shoes aren’t dated IMO, they’re just a classic shoe.

My vote still goes for flat (mules, most probably). Or a low to mid block heeled sandal.

I’m waaaaay more interested in whether or not you’ll need to go handbag shopping!

minipie · 04/06/2021 09:12

If there’s any bit of the wedding where you’re standing on grass then spiky heels will be a pain and sink in, suede spiky heels will be ruined.

Ninkanink · 04/06/2021 09:18

That’s very true!

Maireas · 04/06/2021 09:22

Go for the flatform sandals. Mules or slides.
You won't wear strappy sandals again, so don't buy them.

UnreasonablyPissedOff · 04/06/2021 09:22

Beautiful dress OP & given it's long sleeves & skirt shape I can see why you were thinking boots..
I don't think very fine strappy sandals would work with the proportions.
It's an absolute no from me for mules / sliders / flatforms/ birkenstocks or cowboy shoeboots with the shape of the dress.

I'm not sure about the whistles stilettos either.

I think the issue is your top half will be very covered & it's short so it leaves a lot of leg & Then foot exposed - a little unbalanced by a very fine shoe.

Personally I'd look for pale suede high heel ankle boots - cream probably & bare legs

I would pick pointy toes which would give the dress a little bit of edge

It's a really gorgeous dress & I'm sure you'll look beautiful no matter what you wear

Maireas · 04/06/2021 09:25

I think the best thing is to wear the dress, go round shops and try shoes on to see what looks ok and what you feel comfortable wearing.

Iamthewombat · 04/06/2021 09:30

@Cocolapew

In my view, the problem with ‘wear what you want’ is that if you turn up in something overly casual (or revealing, or wedding dress-adjacent, or inappropriate in some other way) is that it can seem a bit disrespectful to the bride and groom, who unless they have said “dress however you like!” will be expecting guests to have made an effort and to keep to the prevailing trends of dressing for a formal summer wedding.
Maireas · 04/06/2021 09:33

That's quite a switch from black heavy boots with a chain to high heeled court shoes! Would you ever wear the court shoes again? That's important to you.

Ellpellwood · 04/06/2021 09:42

I don't think the orangey beige suede goes with a white dress. And definitely not black flatforms. Honestly I just suck it up and buy wedding shoes from places like New Look so it doesn't matter how much wear they get. I'd go nudeish strappy sandals.

minipie · 04/06/2021 11:23

What about suede or leather wedges? If you choose smartish ones they will be smart enough for a wedding - purple toenails to match the dress Smile - and you’ll get wear out of them at other times. Also very practical for standing on grass and much comfier than spiky heels.

minipie · 04/06/2021 11:26

these green wedges would look fab but tan would work too IMO

RosaBudDrood · 04/06/2021 11:30

The heels are better, but I don't think the beige colour works well with the dress at all.
