It's for DD's wedding in October. Struggling to work out just how much ' 'MOB' to go.

I have found some very expensive and very formal MOB dresses which I like but as DH will refuse to wear anything formal I am looking for other ideas and wondered if this would be 'Special' enough.

Also what colour accessories would you put with it. The groom and family are wearing burgundy bow ties and blue suits. The bridesmaids are in dark grey.

I agree. First is way too normal. It’s the sort of thing you’d wear to the school play. The second is much better

HandforthParishCouncilClerk · 02/06/2021 20:40

I think you really need to give yourself and your DH a kick up the bum tbh - stop thinking in terms of ‘it’s more expensive than my wedding dress was’, ‘it’s too smart’ etc - this is your daughter’s wedding! If you can afford it, then it’s not too expensive. If it makes you feel lovely, it’s not too smart.

WhatsGoingOnHereThen · 02/06/2021 20:40

Hmm something in between might be possible then.

If you like blue, try John Lewis - dresses - occasion - wedding guest - blue and there are 500+ to look through, of every shape and style imaginable. Hopefully something catches your eye.

It's a one off occasion so wear whatever you feel fabulous in regardless of the others!

Bluntness100 · 02/06/2021 20:42

I vote go for the one you love. It’s gorgeous. Go for it. Who cares what it costs if you can afford it.

TortoiseShed · 02/06/2021 20:46

Regardless of what op goes for, I think you need to buy the dress @Bluntness100 Wink

I definitely agree though, that, within reason, don't let the cost put you off the perfect (or as close to perfect as possible) dress. But if that isn't the perfect dress then also keep looking Smile. You've got till October!

whattodo2019 · 02/06/2021 20:49

Sorry i dont like either dresses.

Rina66 · 02/06/2021 20:55

I love the off the shoulder dark blue dress. Absolutely lovely.

PresentingPercy · 02/06/2021 20:56

Really do not do off the shoulder body con unless you are a show off and have a model figure! Just don’t do it.

Look at Carol Middleton for mob style. Just copy her. Have a good look at Ascot style and mob style in the media. Formal dressing is an art. It’s October. It’s Autumn. You don’t have to do matchy matchy colour with the groomsmen. Don’t wear red shoes. Try elegant colours and well cut clothes that flatter. Try and get an appointment with JL style consultants.

What? Is this a serious post? Unless you’re a show off? 😂😂😂😂

I can’t believe you said copy Kate Middleton and resorted to use John lewis consultants.

Oly4 · 02/06/2021 21:02

The royal blue off the shoulder is gorgeous though. And can be worn again

FourTurnings · 02/06/2021 21:09

The midnight blue is a gorgeous dress. It’s a wedding and people should dress up , especially the bride’s parents. I’d be inclined to keep hair back and swept up out of the way (if it’s long) to show off that neckline and add a fur or faux fur stole, personally. Heels, obviously and a clutch and you’re good to go. Fab outfit.

pilates · 02/06/2021 21:14

Neither.

I like the one Oly4 has suggested

PatsyJStone · 02/06/2021 21:18

I also like the second dresses, don’t see any issue with off the shoulder either or being cold. If you love them go for it! It’s a one off chance so take it and have a great time!

Mumski45 · 02/06/2021 21:19

@WhatsGoingOnHereThen yes that's what I did on the John Lewis website but it's so difficult without being able to try on so yes @PresentingPercy I do have an appointment at JL.

Interesting to hear such a mix of responses to the dark blue off the shoulder dress.

I did feel fab in the blue dress and it is very flattering but I could get a whole outfit and have change left over just for the price of the dress.

And yes I do have until October but am keeping my eye out for potential bargains should they come along.

I hate the Hobbs dress, frumpy shape and pattern, can’t imagine it will flatter anyone, and I love the dark blue off the shoulder!

PresentingPercy · 02/06/2021 21:47

One of the huge problems with a dress on its own is what to wear with it if it’s cold. A coat you already own? What about all that hanging around for photos? A blazer spoils everything. It’s just a work piece of clothing. That’s why a dress with decent co ordinating cost is the most stylish.

ChubbyLittleManInACampervan · 02/06/2021 21:54

I think a dress with coordinating coat , MOB style is such a dated look

Why dress like a MOB anyway?

I will not dress like Middleton, buy something safe from John Lewis, or wear a matching dress-coat combo

Nooooo I will be wearing a boho silk dress from eBay Grin

Just as well my DC are not yet getting married

Anyway, just wanted to give a dissenting voice. I would not be caught dead in any traditional MOB outfit. In your shoes I’d just wear a dress I really really like , not too formal

RulesRulesRulesRulesRules · 02/06/2021 21:57

How about this OP?

TortoiseShed · 02/06/2021 21:58

@ChubbyLittleManInACampervan, I agree. I say a hard no to matching dress and coat, (for myself, if and when I'm MOB. Everyone else can wear what they like, naturally - I'm nice that way Grin)

RulesRulesRulesRulesRules · 02/06/2021 22:00

Or this?

TortoiseShed · 02/06/2021 22:01

Op, do you have a budget in mind and do you want suggestions?

RulesRulesRulesRulesRules · 02/06/2021 22:02
