Denim jackets - not with jeans? Ok with jeans?

I'vust bought my first denim jacket since the '90s (bit late to jump on the band wagon). I bought it mainly to wear with dresses, but can I wear it with jeans? Not really? Too 90s? Double denim ... different colours of denim? I've tried and returned linen trousers, I'm basically in jeans if not in dresses, and like my entire team I wear jeans to work mainly for practical reasons.

Denim jackets with jeans - no or yes, and if yes is it only with jeans in a different blue?

Of course you can.

KirstenBlest · 02/06/2021 10:11

And yes, they are better if a different blue.

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 02/06/2021 10:13

Yay, thank you for giving me the answer I was hoping for GrinBlush

I’d say instant and vehement no to double denim, but I am a child of the 80s so my views are tainted! Personally, I am perfectly happy in different colour denims so have solved the problem with a pale pink denim jacket. However I see a lot of younglings who look great in denim jeans and jacket so I think the answers is, as always, do you like it!

SprayedWithDettol · 02/06/2021 10:15

I wear a different colour denim jacket if I’m wearing with jeans.

Eg blue jeans, white top, white denim jacket

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 02/06/2021 10:19

Ratonastick this was also my thinking - late 80s teen... My denim jacket is blue and I like it that colour for wearing with dresses. I think I'll wear it with heans in a different blue but not the one pair I have in a similar blue... Not a youngling but recently lost a lot of weight which is perhaps making me think I am, as I'm trying clothes I last wore pre kids, and my lovely teen DD eggs me on encouraging me to "share" clothes without an eye to the 30 year age difference Blush GrinConfused

hmm maybe I should have got white... Still I managed to leave the house in jeans and a suitable outer layer before I owned a denim jacket, I guess I just won't wear it with everything Grin

There's quite a lot of finding ypur new style when you change shape, and I haven't been the size I am now since about 20 years ago, and I had a different lifestyle then (city, office job) - which appears to be confusing me a bit as I'm inclined to fall back to what I wore as a student, which isn't necessarily a good look now! Its fun experimenting, but expensive! I've also discovered vinted rather too late in the day - should have done my experimenting there!

It’s the fear of looking like you escaped from Def Leppard, isn’t it? I can say with no shadow of a doubt that no one looks at a 50 ish woman and thinks Iron Maiden, but it’s always a niggle when you look in the mirror!

Anyway, I still say that, if you like the look, you should wear it and sod everyone else.

Ratonastick GrinGrinGlitterball. You're right on many levels in that one short post Brew

I can't. It's a Shakin' Stevens thing for me. Though I was out on Friday with colleagues and noticed a young man was wearing black jeans and a black denim jacket which looked good.

I think it's much easier to wear these things when you're young enough to not have photographic evidence of you and your friends looking like a Status Quo youth tribute band.

misslomi · 02/06/2021 10:42

I wear my blue denim jacket with black jeans and black denim jacket with blue jeans but I don't think I could go matchy matchy. Too 80s!

Janaih · 02/06/2021 10:44

Dd 21 wears her blue denim jacket with black jeans.

AlfonsoTheMango · 02/06/2021 10:44

Of course! You should wear a denim jacket with jeans if it makes you happy.

notacooldad · 02/06/2021 11:01

As always it depends on how it looks on you.
That will depend on the style and colour of the jeans and jacket.
Wear faded boot cut levi's with a faded levi jacket will make you look like you belong in a Bon Jovi video from the 80's.
Someone at work wears black jeans with a denim jacket and she looks great.
I'm currently just wearing my denim jacket with the ubiquitous floaty dress and white Nikes!

UsedUpUsername · 02/06/2021 11:02

Ah the Canadian tuxedo 😂

hazandduck · 02/06/2021 11:04

I wear denim jacket with jeans a lot. Usually black jeans and oversized blue denim jacket. I’ve never even thought about it before! Also wear with denim skirts too!

schroeder · 02/06/2021 12:11

I just couldn't, I would always think of Quo...

yourestandingonmyneck · 02/06/2021 12:16

On this subject, could anybody recommend a nice denim jacket? I'm looking for one that's quite soft and stretchy and tight.

The one I have is a bit stiff and boxy looking and makes me look much bigger than I am (which I could do without!)

KirstenBlest · 02/06/2021 16:12

Depends on your budget and the style you want. I'd look at the high street brands

Craftycorvid · 02/06/2021 17:02

I am absolutely of the ‘if you like it, wear it’ school of thought. I would tend to wear a jeans-style jacket in a different fabric if wearing denim jeans, though, e.g cord or moleskin. I do own a classic denim jacket and think they really are timeless now. I’d generally wear with a dress or non-denim trews.

MoiraQueen · 02/06/2021 19:49

I wouldn't double blue due to Shakin Stevens.
But fine if they are a different colour.

KirstenBlest · 02/06/2021 20:07

That's a nice one Rampant

Holothane · 02/06/2021 20:11

Must get a new denim jacket I wear nothing but jeans.
