What should I wear... to get married?

I'd love some ideas! Long description below, but a fancy dress that's a bit special but not super formal, for a size 16 with ginger hair?

Long version: I am getting married next month in Denmark, just me and him, no guests or reception afterwards. It will be really informal with a 10 minute legal ceremony only. However, I would like to dress up a bit and have some nice photos taken, which will go some way towards placating his mum as well.... He has a dark grey suit and we can get a shirt for him that matches or doesn't, if that helps.
I don't think pale colours suit me as I have red hair (Lily Cole colour) and similar colouring, although not many freckles. I go red in the face and chest at the drop of a hat, so nothing which clashes or emphasises that. I'm 5ft 6, so long dresses often are too long, and I won't wear big heels, a wedge maybe. I am a size 16 and don't particularly like the top of my arms or my thighs, so anything which disguises them a little would be great...
I like dark colours particularly teal/blue and dark green suits me, but am aware that I dress very boringly, and very casually, so something a bit more special would be nice.
I like this dress: www.asos.com/closet-london-plus/closet-london-plus-wrap-front-pleated-midi-skater-dress-in-navy/prd/23280599?colourwayid=60467065&cid=9579
for the colour and shape, but it might not be formal enough, and might not look that great in photos (also might need something over it as photos will be outside).

I wonder if this is better, a break from my norm but I quite like the colour and it might photograph better... www.asos.com/chi-chi-london/chi-chi-london-high-neck-ombre-maxi-dress-in-blue/prd/14474815?colourwayid=16618994&cid=13934

Or, any other suggestions that you've seen recently?

And I should have said - Thank you so much for any comments or suggestions! I am well outside my comfort zone so really not sure what I want, but have seen some recent threads with people asking for advice and some of the suggestions have been lovely.

Thank you!

What's your budget?

Ulelia · 25/05/2021 09:43

Oh good question. I don't want to spend much more than 150 quid, but could go up to 250 if I love it!

Monsoon has a dress called Cassia, it's royal blue with an embroidered top and the skirt has an embroidered net overskirt. It's beautiful Just realised I can post a photo but can't do links.

That is really pretty, thank you! I'll investigate...

I wore this to my civil partnership last year:

I wore a dark green petticoat underneath, one of the very layered ones, with a pair of shimmery black DMs Grin

This was the petticoat. The pictures don’t do it justice tbh, it was lovely and soft and swishy. I had great fun twirling around in it 😂

The dress was good quality for for the price. The material was a good thickness and the colours were strong, I loved it!

Wearing green will offset any potential flushing of the face and chest.

Squiz81 · 25/05/2021 14:41

This is in John Lewis I think the colour would look amazing on you. I know you said that long dresses are too long for you, but you’re taller than me and I normally get away with it. You could always get it shortened too.

This is gorgeous! I am 5ft 6 and could easily wear this length- I rarely wear heels. I also love the two choices of yours but I think with the information you gave, the lilac won't be the right colour. Do you have next day Asos delivery? If so, just order loads. And order this green one too! Good luck.

Not sure if Nancy Mac would be your style, but lots of lovely green dresses.

Again, a retro look - this would suit your colouring - not sure if linking properly, but this dress is in green.

There's some great ideas here thank you!
@ChiefClerkDrumknott your dress is fab, and thank you for introducing me to two great brands!

@Squiz81 that's really beautiful. I'm a bit scared of such a block of colour but I'd be really tempted to try it as I'm trying to move out of comfort zone, unfortunately I can only find it available in a size 8 Sad

@waltzingparrot that's very pretty but too light a green for me. Will delve deeper into John Lewis though.

@mrssmiling those are both great, I love the styles and the Nancy Mac site has some really lovely shades of green.

Lots to look at, thank you everyone!

@Ulelia oh no! I even checked that before I posted it, they had 8 and 16 earlier. I think a block of colour would look very elegant.

bonfireheart · 25/05/2021 20:56

The silk Fred dress is divine, would look gorgeous with your colouring and I think it's a steal at that price.

Fcuk38 · 25/05/2021 21:02

Your choices aren’t glam enough imo.
Just because it’s just you and your husband to be you can still go overboard and have that special dress. Check out some retro shops top vintage, Vivienne of Holloway, pretty kitty, house of foxy.

CovoidOfAllHumanity · 25/05/2021 21:21

I also think you should go more glam. I am loving that Silk Fred dress too and its a bargain price. I bet that would look stunning on you. Don't be put off by the size 8 model. I think it would look good on a curvy figure too. My Dsis is a redhead and got married in emerald green which looked gorgeous.

HeyMicky · 25/05/2021 21:48

SIL (similar size and colouring) wore this in green with a fantastic brooch for her wedding
