Do you find high waisted jeans comfortable?

This last year there’s been a lot of people saying they haven’t been wearing jeans in lockdown as they are ‘so uncomfortable’. Since high waisted styles are pretty much all prevalent these days I assume such people are wearing high waisted jeans. I personally have never been able to wear high waisted jeans, they constrict my stomach and induce painful trapped wind (sorry, tmi). I can only wear low rise (at least two inches below my belly button) but then I find them comfortable to wear all day, including as casual wear at home.

I know high waisted jeans are very popular but am interested in whether that’s because that is what is available and fashionable, or whether people are in fact secretly cursing them?

I am normally pretty sanguine about changing fashions but that ultra low rise era was a dark time for me.

TakeMe2Insanity · 24/05/2021 10:39

I like the idea of them but they don’t work on me. Under my belly button feels stuffed and above gapes.

Love high waisted jeans

I'm still wearing mine. Grin

I love high-waisted jeans, they keep everything in and no chance of your bum showing - yuk!

Remember the days of Miss Sixty low-rise jeans? Man did i LOVE them at the time.

I don't mind where the waist sits. If they fit me properly I'm comfortable in them. The only time I've had issues with jeans is when they've inexplicanly shrunk in the wardrobe. (Happens a lot actually. Must be very damp in there!)

BatshitCrazyWoman · 24/05/2021 15:28

@DietrichandDiMaggio

I hate them. I've bought several pairs of jeans in the last few months, but have returned them all, because the waist is up to my ribs. I don't mind medium rise, that sit level with my belly button, but high rise just feel like I want to pull them down to sit lower, but that would leave the crotch sagging down. They also make me look fatter around the middle, when I've actually got a pretty flat stomach.
Exactly this. I don't want the waistband of my jeans just under my bra band. And I'm relatively slim with a flattish stomach and they make me look big. Hate them.
lindyloo57 · 24/05/2021 16:56

I can't get on with them, they come up to high right under my bust, I am petite maybe that's why, I prefer mid rise.

RampantIvy · 24/05/2021 17:50

Height makes such a difference doesn't it. I am 5'7" and "high rise" jeans come up to my navel, and nowhere near my bust.

HesSpartacus · 24/05/2021 18:31

Same, Rampantivy - I'm just over 5ft 6 and high rises sit right on my belly button. Low rise are fine but mid-rise are the worst - I got sent some by Stitch Fix last month. They cut right across the middle of my tummy and gave me a huge muffin top. It all depends where the majority of your fat is Smile.

Floisme · 24/05/2021 18:37

If it was all about height then, at 5'3, I'd expect low rise to be more comfortable. But they're not. So I think it's also about the length of your torso and the point where the waist indentation happens. I guess I'm short but with a long torso, or at least it's long in proportion to my height.

lindyloo57 · 24/05/2021 18:55

I'm 5ft 3 i thought i had a long torso with short legs , but now I'm not so sure, as I said high rise jeans are a no no, and most tops I buy are alway too long for me, I think I have a short waist to below my bum and long from waist to shoulder. My inside leg measure 28in

LivingDeadGirlUK · 24/05/2021 18:59

They don't suit my shape, make my torso look tiny.

Trompea · 24/05/2021 19:10

I can't believe no one has mentioned the main reason I find high waisted jeans so uncomfortable - whenever I sit down I feel like they are sawing my bits in two! Especially 100% cotton ones. Always thought it was bc I have a long torso but surprised to see others with long torsos saying they prefer high waists.

RampantIvy · 24/05/2021 21:22

I think it is to do with shape as well. Low rise cut into me because I am pear shaped, and the rise cuts into the widest part of me.

Sarahplane · 24/05/2021 22:51

I hate them, I like a mid rise that comes up to my belly button. Any higher and my stomach doesn't fit and I can't sit down.

FreekStar · 25/05/2021 08:02

I find high-waisted more comfortable these days - low-rise always seem to fall down and I hate the draughty feeling if you are wearing a shorter top- especially when you sit down and half your bum and back hang out the back!

StarlightLady · 25/05/2021 08:19

I would rather have my back or even the tip of my bum show when l sit down, l’m relaxed about that, than feel cut in half when sitting.

Shelovesamystery · 25/05/2021 08:35

High waisted everything for me.. Jeans, leggings, skirts, knickers etc. So much more comfortable imo.

RubyGoat · 25/05/2021 10:08

I wonder if it depends on what you grew up wearing. I’m 40 & much prefer high waisted jeans. Low waisted jeans seem really uncomfortable, cold on my back as they’re awkward if I want them tucked in or too short for many tops as there’s a gap. I don’t like seeing or showing arse cracked, which is especially an issue when sitting down in them. Also, a high waist goes above any flab, whereas a low waist cuts it in half, for maximum muffin top effect.
Really happy to see a few high waisted jeans in the shops, finally. I don’t like skinnies either. They suit almost no-one.

StarlightLady · 25/05/2021 10:39

@LegoCaltrops - It’s not just an age thing. I’m a similar age to you. I think it’s more of a shape thing.

RubyGoat · 25/05/2021 11:53

@StarlightLady could be. I’m an hourglass when I’m slim, pear when I’m overweight ( as I’m am now). I’ve always preferred higher waisted jeans.

Cadburyflakeicecream · 25/05/2021 12:19

I don’t like skinnies either @LegoCaltrops. Much prefer a looser style. Currently wearing straight and so much more comfortable and look miles better. Also an hourglass when slim and currently an apple verging to pear.

BikeRunSki · 25/05/2021 12:22

I love them! I have a very “long waist” and low tide jeans literally barely cover my knickers.

SnottyLottie · 25/05/2021 12:34

I find them comfortable because I have a small waist in proportion to my hips. Normal jeans just dig into my stomach and hips, whereas high waisted sit nicely around my waist and skim my hips.
