What happened to S&B?

I used to browse this topic regularly several years ago and I enjoyed the recommendations of Ash high tops, Net A Porter sale items and high end make up, amongst other things. Loved reading what LetThemEatCake had been buying.
I've been having migrating over to here again recently after a long time away and it's all Roman Originals, granny sandals and things that "wash well".
WTF happened?

I sorta think it's a bit annoying when posters say "my teenage/20s" whatevee wears it or "approves" as if that obviously makes it on trend? Plenty of unstylish kids out there.

ChubbyLittleManInACampervan · 20/05/2021 07:50

Yes! Kids don’t rule

Selkie1961 · 20/05/2021 07:56

Exactly. My 18 yr old has no sense of her own style yet. I wouldnt pay much attention to her opinions on fashion altho she has plenty of them.

My DD (before lockdown and job loss) worked in a very fashionable environment (think gaming/Japanese culture). I agree not all young 'uns are stylish but she certainly is.

Also 'on trend' is not the same as stylish - fashion and style are two very different things. To me, anyway. That's always been my take. As I said before, each to their own!

TheVampiresWife · 20/05/2021 08:07

This is pretty close to how I wear leggings/footless tights under a dress.

I don't disagree with the on trend vs stylish argument. But you're missing my point vampire - your DD might well be stylish. I'm talking about the tendency of posters to come on and say my teenage/young dd or niece or whatever (without any further qualification except that they are young) thinks that this shit look is ace and therefore we should all agree simply because said person is young.

Oh I agree entirely.

I was a mess when I was 18. I used to use baby powder to set my make up and get through a can of hairspray every two days Grin

Absolutely. This is how young 20 somethings can do Cottagecore and have one result in comparison to a 40 something. And if the young person is of the orange tan and fake eyebrows persuasion then I care even less about their opinion. I think on that “ skinny jeans” thread someone posted that their 20 something DD laughed at another age group ( I forget which) and I just thought “ who gives a shit what your DD thinks”

Readyorknot · 20/05/2021 08:29

I wasn't really talking about on trend versus stylish, separate issue altogether (which as I said, I agree isnt exactly the same) - my point was that being teenagers and young people aren't by default either or both.

RampantIvy · 20/05/2021 08:32

@Divebar2021

This is my take on it. I think this looks pretty cool and can see this working on different ages.
Style is so subjective isn't it. I really don't like that outfit at all.
MissKittyKitty · 20/05/2021 08:48

I've really enjoyed reading this thread and a lot of it has resonated with me.

I first discovered S&B after having dc and had totally lost my way re: how to dress as a SAHM. I lurked for a while, discovered new brands and eventually rediscovered my fashion mojo.

I think someone hit the nail on the head when they mentioned about S&B posts on Active. It then attracts posters who are not bothered about clothes and tend to shout down anyone who wants to look reasonably stylish/fashionable.

Incidentally my favourite thread recently was the Chanel handbag one, no-one mentioned buying a bench and lots of Chanel aficionados came out of the woodwork to chat and display their wares. I have zero intention of buying a Chanel bag however for me it was a lovely Saturday morning vicarious read and that's what I like about S&B.

Yes, it has evolved over the years but I still enjoy it warts and all. Plus I still wear my Ash Virgins from time to time. Wink

Divebar2021 · 20/05/2021 09:14

@RampantIvy

It would be a fantastically dull place if we all liked the same things. I probably wouldn’t wear that now because I’ve lost 2 stone and I’m all about showing off my waist at the moment. ( and not feeling shit about myself). It was just the picture I had that was closest to the way I imagine leggings looking “cool”

Floisme · 20/05/2021 09:15

I think that's a good point and I'm sure at the moment, when we're coming out of lockdown, a lot of women who don't normally spend time on S&B are thinking 'what the fuck do I wear now?' and heading over here. I get that and, if I think I can help and I have the time, I will.

But a lot of us don't have much time at the moment and, let's face it, we've all had a shit time of it and we're on short fuses.

Also - and I'm about to sound like a dick but what the hell - if I go onto a board I don't normally post on, I always hang out for a bit first, read some threads, get a feel for it. I don't jump in and tell everyone I'm not really interested in the topic and how shallow they all are for caring about it and why aren't they more welcoming?

thedevilinablackdress · 20/05/2021 09:25

And treating every post like it's in AIBU (aka Where You Go for a Row)

MapleMay11 · 20/05/2021 09:32

Does anyone else play around with looks are you all quite settled on a particular theme? Eg Parisian chic.

I like Boho (particularly vintage and modern YSL) but love to mix it up. I make impulse purchases - it was watching the Rap Game that prompted me to purchase my Prada my full length padded coat. One day I may be riding in tweed working my country lady look and the next inspired by the clashing colours of Gucci. I love to put outfits together and pair pieces unexpectedly. So much fun.

ElspethFlashman · 20/05/2021 09:32

I do wish the Mulberry talk would die down.

Not because I think they're necessarily "over" or anything snobby like that, but because they're quite heavy and overpriced. The Bayswater weighs a ton and the amount of people I've seen admit that they don't end up using them that much as a result. I just don't think they're a great recommendation.

But then I have a crossbody LV Speedy and people throw their arms up in horror here! You can't even mention it without people being appalled at such vulgarity.

ElspethFlashman · 20/05/2021 09:35

I wish I had a specific style.

Instead I'm a very confused mutt who wants to wear an embroidered kaftan top with a pair of rocker black leather trousers.

With a sequinned capelet on top.

And Doc Marten Chelsea boots under it all.

No wonder I have no style! GrinGrinGrin

This sounds fantastic!

And your style sounds pretty specific to me. Individual and eclectic.

Elllllle · 20/05/2021 09:44

I like the idea of this very much @ElspethFlashman except I would ditch the capelet as I have broad shoulders Wink Also really enjoying the chat on different looks - cottagecore and dark academia etc

RampantIvy · 20/05/2021 10:49

Very true. But I was polite, and said I didn't like it rather than it was hideous Smile

Divebar2021 · 20/05/2021 11:29

@RampantIvy

Agreed. Because some of us have manners Wink

Elllllle · 20/05/2021 11:51

At the same time, I think we should be able to (politely) express when we don't like an outfit or item. But not (for example): Sorry but the co-ord is much better than that blue leopard monstrosity

Elllllle · 20/05/2021 11:52

^ which was a particularly shit thing to say when OP had just said that was what she had decided and bought.

Blossomtoes · 20/05/2021 11:54

I love Ash Hi tops! I only found them last year. Aren’t they ageless like Converse ( hopeful).

Do you know what? I don’t care! I’ve been wearing them for years - just bought my sixth pair because I live in them and wear them out. They’re just about the only thing I have on my feet from October to May.

MaryLennoxsScowl · 20/05/2021 12:10

Loving the cottagecore and dark academia chat, and the leggings proof! I agree with the OP - I would like to be able to ask what’s the new shoe shape/discuss jeans without having to wade through posters who are defensively claiming skinny jeans are still in or rubbishing chunky sandals for being unflattering. I’m not getting at you, I just want advice on what’s actually cool now, not a crowd of posters claiming that because they’ve seen other people still wearing skinnies then they must be okay. I can then decide if it suits me or if it’s a trend I want to try. Or it might be an edge that helps lift my old clothes a wee bit.
