A sudden 'it looks do dated' moment (make-up)

So facing my 51st year in a few weeks and have been struggling this past year with menopausal symptoms (now on hrt patches) and generally feeling blergh about my looks. Anyway, its make-up that's currently occupying me as fancy splashing out a bit but don't want to waste my money if Im not putting it on right. Im happy in the main with products I use (though am open to suggestions- love new recommendations) and use Mac, Charlotte Tilbury, Rimmel, benefit. Its the look I have all wrong I think- eye liner esp. Is liner on upper lid still a thing? Blusher on apple of cheek still? Lipliner? 🤣 Thoughts welcome!

I've not used one myself, but I've seen others using them. Benefit, Rimmel and Body Shop all do versions at different price points. Rather than splash out then find it's not for you, if you have a matte eyeshadow you can try that and see if you prefer the result.

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 18/05/2021 11:09

In a suitable shade obviously!

AprilShowerThoughts · 18/05/2021 11:30

It's just makeup, @diege like a thin mascara with a smaller brush.

CornedBeef451 · 19/05/2021 10:53

This is a brilliant thread!

I've never been into makeup and used to just chuck stuff at my face but, after not wearing any for a year, when I did put some on the other day it looked terrible!

I'll try a lighter coverage foundation as suggested and I've just watched one of the Caroline Barnes videos and redid my eyebrows, I think they look better.

My problem is my skin is dry and very sensitive but generally unlined apart from the eye area which looks all crepey and sad.

I use E45 on my face as anything else I've tried tends to sting but I would like to find something better as I think it needs a bit of help and my pores seem to be expanding before my eyes!

I use a Revitalift eye cream but I'm not sure it does anything.

Can anyone suggest skin products for sensitive skin and eyes that might help?

I'm frankly quite scared but now my eyes are surrounded by what looks like elbow skin I think I'm ready to try new things!

something2say · 19/05/2021 11:08

@pumpkinstace

I felt the same, so I looked up videos on pinterest and youtube. Eye makeup for over 40s.

It taught me to use a light shade over most of the eyelid using a big brush, then using a tiny brush, draw in a line on the socket and blend, then colour in a tiny triangle at the side. Can draw a line underneath the eyes if you like, but I often don't. Then no eyeliner, curl eyelashes and mascara.

It's the eye socket that makes the difference. Light on the lid, dark in the socket. At first my lines weren't that smooth but you should see them now!!! I feel like a painter, carefully painting my own eyes! I have found Mac and Chanel to be the best for eye shadow. Cheap ones dont work nicely.

In a fit of insomnia fuelled depression the other night, I bought some Trinny stuff for the first time, and it arrived yesterday. I’m pleasantly surprised. I know I’d need a face full of Botox and filler to actually look like Trinny, but I’m certainly liking it as a treat to myself. (Got the BFF, the de-stress serum (I wish!), a lip to cheek and an eye to eye.)

coronafiona · 19/05/2021 11:26

Beauty and the boutique have some great tips she is a make up artist and shred her techniques.

something2say · 19/05/2021 11:28

I've bought some too!!!

How are you finding the destress serum? That's on it's way here... which lip2cheek did you go for?

First time, I ordered a lip gloss, a pink blusher for a work look and a highlighter. Cant get the hang of the highlighter yet but the whole look is fresh and pretty.

I'm waiting on the serum, the miracle blur and a dress up lip2cheek. So excited!!

mammmamia · 19/05/2021 11:47

I have the same problem at @CornedBeef451 crepey skin around my eyes that looks like wrinkly elbow skin Shock
I’ve started using an eye cream so it feels better but doesn’t look better! Grateful for any tips on this.

Well, only used it for the first time today but it went on well and I’ve convinced myself I looked better after I put it on. I got Rossy in the lip to cheek. It’s a touch warmer than I expected but it’s stayed in place and has wandered all over my face.
ilovecherries · 19/05/2021 11:52

Has NOT wandered!

Fearnecuptea · 19/05/2021 11:55

@Cowbells

My links aren't working at the moment but look up the brilliant youtube video Make Up Mistakes To Avoid by Ali Andreea. She's a genius. When I follow her advice completely, I always get loads of compliments. When I don't, I don't Grin. It's a bit time consuming but well worth it if you have a big night out planned.
Thanks for the recommendation! starting off watching this vid, now gone down a rabbit whole of Ali Andreea's make up tutorials!

Some of the things she mentions I always forget to do, i.e. I always forget primer because I basically can't be arsed!

She has a really good no make-up make-up video. I copy her technique but using different products.
CornedBeef451 · 19/05/2021 13:07

@mammmamia I find any makeup I put anywhere near my eyes just lodges in all the creases and makes it look even worse!

I just watched a video by Caroline Barnes about using concealer around your eyes but I don't think it would work over the sheer amount of. crepeyness!

I'm thinking of upgrading my eye cream but I react to so many things I'm a bit scared of trying anything with acid in the ingredients.

Serpenta · 19/05/2021 13:16

La Roche Posay's Toleriane Ultra eye cream is good eye cream for people with sensitive eyes.

CornedBeef451 · 19/05/2021 13:28

@Serpenta thanks I'll have a look.

I use a sun cream for my face in the same brand as it doesn't cause acne, or at least not as quickly, as other brands so hopefully I can use it.

Can anyone recommend a powder that may be slightly dewy rather than powdery as I find liquid or cream foundation just settles into my pores around my nose. I need good coverage as i have a lot of redness on nose and cheeks, broken veins rather than rosacea type of redness.

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 19/05/2021 19:07

I would go for a lighter foundation and use a matching concealer on the red areas tbh. The Clarins concealer is great ime just patted on gently with your middle finger tip.

Deathraystare · 20/05/2021 15:58

I am now 61 and have very little in the way of brows and non distinct lashes so I make sure I always colour in some brow (draw them on!!) and pop on some mascara and, although I am no artist I paint on eye liner - not as well as others but my eyes do need definition. I don't bother with lip liner as I think it can look hard and ageing. I don'[t bother with blusher at the moment as I normally have a mask but |I do have lipstick on!

Re the apples of the cheeks - I remember Waynes Goss saying not for ageing cheeks because he showed what happens when you smile and apply the blusher then stop smiling, the blusher is further down your face! I have also read another book about 'ageing' beauty (for want of a better title and once again they go on about putting blusher on the apples of your cheek. They also go on about putting on 'quiet' lip stick like a soft pink. This does not suit everyone! They ignore different skin tones for starters! I do not think a woman of colour/someone with quite mediterranean features would look good like that and I have seen quite a few more mature women with bolder make up that suits them. It all depends on your colouring!

WeAreTheHeroes · 30/05/2021 08:35

I went make up shopping yesterday. Went into Morphe where I was ignored so went into Superdrug and Boots instead where the staff were great. I bought a No 7 Protect and Perfect advanced eye cream so will see how that goes. I also got their lip and cheek tint and some new sponges - Andreea Ali advises applying creams and tints with a sponge instead of finger tips. I was going to get a Clarins cream blusher but the Boots one was free on 2 for 3 so I thought I'd give it a try. Bought a new Maybelline tubing mascara to replace the ancient Bourjois one I had. I've found that my usual eye make up looks too heavy so I'm changing that.

isthismylifenow · 30/05/2021 12:57

Thank you for the links, guess what I will be doing for the rest of the day.... 😊

BusterGonad · 30/05/2021 13:43

I've not read every post, but thought I'd chime in on what works for me, I'm 42 with okay skin but it's sensitive and gets dry. I like to use a moisturing foundation and at the moment I'm obsessed with the Bareminerals foundation stick, I did it on then blend it in with my fingers, it gets nice and warm and blends like a dream. I love it. I then use Skinfood lip and check trio as a blusher, high up on my checkbones, blended towards the top of my ear, I hardly ever use bronzer as I look ruddy with it, I'm pale cool toned (but I sometimes put some under my chin to give me a better jawline), I never use liner I just use dark eyeshadow blended in, I use eyebrow powder and always have done, lips, anything goes, matte, glossy stain or moisturising lipstick. I sometimes use a multi coloured brightening powder if I want my makeup to last. Not too different from Dandion, which imo isn't a blusher but a finishing powder (originally sold as this when it was first released). Concealer wise I've started using Estee Lauder double wear double ended one, one end is a pink primer specifically to use under your eyes to soften lines etc.

BusterGonad · 30/05/2021 13:43

I dot it on.
