A sudden 'it looks do dated' moment (make-up)

So facing my 51st year in a few weeks and have been struggling this past year with menopausal symptoms (now on hrt patches) and generally feeling blergh about my looks. Anyway, its make-up that's currently occupying me as fancy splashing out a bit but don't want to waste my money if Im not putting it on right. Im happy in the main with products I use (though am open to suggestions- love new recommendations) and use Mac, Charlotte Tilbury, Rimmel, benefit. Its the look I have all wrong I think- eye liner esp. Is liner on upper lid still a thing? Blusher on apple of cheek still? Lipliner? 🤣 Thoughts welcome!

You could also check out Look Fabulous Forever, make-up especially for mature skin! Excellent videos too.

And I have just signed up to Beauty Pie set up by the amazing Marcia Kilgore

I'm the same age as you and I've stopped wearing eye shadow and trying instead to use a thin eyeliner brush to put on a line of eyeshadow. It's less stark looking than eyeliner. Which I just cannot get right.

I had a drop of gold (either loreal or no7) to my make up to make it glow.
I hope I look like I'm not making things worse!

diege · 15/05/2021 19:36

That's interesting about Dandelion Handforth . It's ordered now 🤦‍♀️ so will see how it goes!
So changes to make...concealer and a more sheer foundation/tinted moisturiser (already use daily spf), address eyeliner, placement of blusher (have a good creme one from Mac). Lighten brow filler (naturally hair is a very dark brown/black) now a sort of brond...(highlights).
So glad I started this thread- feeling very inspired- there's hope yet Grin

@tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz I use Avon glimmer sticks. One end is a smudger.

mammmamia · 15/05/2021 20:51

I loved Dandelion in my 20s and 30s - honestly after a night out it made me look so fresh the next morning - does nothing for me now in my early 40s but I still have a box I’m hanging onto!

Great thread though OP. I’m in desperate need of make up tips, I never get it right!

diege · 15/05/2021 20:53

Thanks for the links chief - love Mac lipsticks and have worn Kinda Sexy (the irony) for many years. Have my eye on a few others now!

I’m early 20s & think eyeliner is dated - wherever you apply it and in any colour.

The only time I think it looks right is if you have a night out eyeshadow look; such as rose gold eyeshadow, then use a brown eyeshadow to smudge your lash lines. As it’s with eyeshadow it looks much more softer and blended than actual liner.

Eye makeup is currently more fresh and open. Eg a light colour on the lid, a neutral eyeshadow in the crease for definition then lashes being the main focus. Whereas I think black eyeliner, anywhere, sort of closes your eyes.

There’s no rules in makeup though, so if you like eyeliner, keep using it.

wingsnthat · 15/05/2021 21:05

For blush, I have a heart shaped face (high/wide cheekbones and a more narrow v shaped chin/jaw) and I apply it at the top of my cheeks towards my temples. It sort of emphasises my face shape. I don’t think the apple of cheek technique suits me.

@keeponkeepinon your foundation issues sound like more of a skincare issue rather than makeup. A good moisturiser, sunscreen and serum should keep all of that in check. The foundation is just for coverage.

wheresmymojo · 15/05/2021 21:43

There's a make up artist called Andrea Ali on YouTube who has an excellent channel and great tutorials.

She's (at a guess) in her 40's which means she's great for make up that works for those of us who aren't in our 20's anymore.

wheresmymojo · 15/05/2021 21:44

@Cowbells

My links aren't working at the moment but look up the brilliant youtube video Make Up Mistakes To Avoid by Ali Andreea. She's a genius. When I follow her advice completely, I always get loads of compliments. When I don't, I don't Grin. It's a bit time consuming but well worth it if you have a big night out planned.

Ah, snap!

She is great!

wheresmymojo · 15/05/2021 21:51

Personally I don't massively rate Trinny make up. It's just...okay.

I've had much better results watching quite a lot of Andrea Ali and then using her recommendations.

I've moved away from full coverage moisturiser to something light/medium coverage and less matte.

I'm moving towards stopping black liquid liner and moving to using a dark brown kohl smudge or dark brown eyeshadow using an eyeliner brush (top lid only).

I find Robert Welsh (another MUA) on YouTube explains well where to place bronzer and blusher according to your face shape.

Long face = you want it more sort of horizontal to make your face appear rounder

Round face = more diagonally down to make your face appear longer

mammmamia · 15/05/2021 21:51

@wingsnthat I have long suspected this about my black eyeliner!
Can you post a photo of what you described? I can’t picture it.

wheresmymojo · 15/05/2021 21:52

I've also totally changed my skincare routine and found Dr. Dray (slightly annoying nasal American voice) good on YouTube very good.

wheresmymojo · 15/05/2021 21:54

I'm also using Nars liquid concealer now which is good

covilha · 15/05/2021 22:03

The Hello mirror guess my age range by Hema is really good

covilha · 15/05/2021 22:05

Both my Mum and I use Hemas make up range ( tho the vegan version was not as good quality)

DamSky · 15/05/2021 22:21

I'm pale and have switched to Korean brands. Living erborian cc cream and a fresh cheek and punky lips.

Pumpkinstace · 15/05/2021 22:25

I'm 38 and own some brown/black mascara and that's it.

When I was younger I would wear a bit for a night out, some eye shadow and eyeliner but if I tried it now I would look like I stepped out of 2002.

I would love to learn to apply basic make up and which products to use.

Where would I start? Cosmetics counter in boots?

Serpenta · 15/05/2021 22:34

@wheresmymojo

I've also totally changed my skincare routine and found Dr. Dray (slightly annoying nasal American voice) good on YouTube very good.
Her voice is something else. I assume it's a moneyed East Coast American accent. Reminds me of that episode of friends where Phoebe tries to sound like Katherine Hepburn in order to impress the in laws.
SlatternIsMyMiddleName · 15/05/2021 22:37

@Pumpkinstace I hate to say it, but it’s trial and error. If I buy something and it ends up on my ‘b’ list it gets demoted to the caravan or the box of stuff I use when I’m not actually going anywhere.

I found No. 7 and Benefit a good place to start. I’m easily pleased with pretty packaging! When you get used to working with different products you can go ‘up’ the brands. I have a mixture of loads of brands.

RestingPandaFace · 15/05/2021 22:41

I always used to use Mac studio fx and more recently No7 stay perfect, with Mac powder blush, but it wasn’t sitting right on my skin.

Over the last year I’ve changed to using no7 foundation drops and glow drops in their protect and perfect moisturiser, with Benetint as blush. it gives a lovely sheer finish and the glow drops just give a bit of a glow, without being shiny. Sits so much better on my skin too.

Pumpkinstace · 15/05/2021 22:41

I'm happy with trial and error that's part of the fun.

I just have no idea where to start.

I can't apply the stuff, I don't know what to do. I can't just practice because I don't know what I'm practicing if you get me?

I'll just default to 2002 and think it looks good because that's what I know.

I'm not making myself clear. I'm autistic...it's a problem in these areas. Grin
