A sudden 'it looks do dated' moment (make-up)

So facing my 51st year in a few weeks and have been struggling this past year with menopausal symptoms (now on hrt patches) and generally feeling blergh about my looks. Anyway, its make-up that's currently occupying me as fancy splashing out a bit but don't want to waste my money if Im not putting it on right. Im happy in the main with products I use (though am open to suggestions- love new recommendations) and use Mac, Charlotte Tilbury, Rimmel, benefit. Its the look I have all wrong I think- eye liner esp. Is liner on upper lid still a thing? Blusher on apple of cheek still? Lipliner? 🤣 Thoughts welcome!

I think a lot of the posters here would love Em Cosmetics, a brand by Michelle Phan (OG YouTube queen). It takes influence from Korean and Japanese cosmetics and skin care - the look is healthy, dewy skin, with washes of colour, nothing heavy and matte. Based in US there may be hefty shipping and import fees. Her stuff has great reviews though.

@Serpenta

I like the Glossier concealer but hate the cloud paints. I like cream blushes but liquid blushes aren't for me.
I'm the opposite. Love Cloud Paint but the concealer just doesn't take to my skin.
SeaShoreGalore · 16/05/2021 21:58

Em cosmetics has ridiculously high shipping rates from the US, even if you’re really, really into make up I would say not worth it.

Lisa Eldridge has the best tutorials on YouTube I think.

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 16/05/2021 22:08

Can anyone recommend something for the skin around the eyes? I put make up on today because I need to record myself for something and found my upper lids were crepey at the outer corners - I've not noticed this before Sad. I'm a contact lens wearer.

RestingPandaFace · 16/05/2021 22:15

I like no7 a youthful eyes. There’s also a great garnier roll on with caffeine but I haven’t been able to find it recently.

MrsMaizel · 16/05/2021 22:26

@diege have a look at this site and especially her tutorials . Some amazing products on here .

Liner on the upper lids will never go out of style!

I think dewy and natural is a more modern look than matte and “caked”. It’s also much more flattering if you’re 45+, in my case it became more flattering in my late twenties 🤣

I tend to feel that overlined lips or lips that are matte brown/taupe, look very nineties and not flattering on most people.

For a natural, dewy, and nicer sally flattering makeup look, try either the Chantecaille Future Skin foundation, the Charlotte Tilbury Light wonder or the Nars tinted moisturiser. The concealers from the same three brands are also brilliant for all skin types. If you want more coverage, Bobbi brown stick foundation is a classic for a reason!

Bobbi brown is a great brand overall, you can’t go wrong with it so I’d definitely pay a visit there. They have an iconic gel liner in a pot, which you can use for all different kinds of looks- precise cat eye, smokey eye, just filling in the upper lash line before mascara or a slightly smudged, lived in upper lid liner. Their stick eyeshadows are also quick and easy. Just swipe, blend with fingers and go!

I am the same age as you op and I recently went in to a local beauty salon to refresh my make-up. I'm cool toned with silvering light ash blonde hair and she suggested going a little bit warmer with my make-up to give more of a glow. I was a bit dubious but it works.
I now use Jane iredale tinted moisturiser and peaches and cream compact (not tested on animals) for eyes, lips, cheeks and a pink eyeshadow on lower lid. Then blend and finish with mascara.
It looks fresh and glowy and most importantly updated.

JinglingHellsBells · 17/05/2021 17:39

I'm a Bobbi Brown fan as they do go for natural look.

@diege There are loads of videos on their website which are good.

You can also google Hannah Martin MUA who used to work for B Brown but is now freelance or whatever, but her youtube videos are great if you need advice.

She has one which is showing her applying all the B Brown foundations, one after the other, to compare.

I agree that prepping before foundation is important- moisturiser, a primer if you want staying power, a good sunblock too, and foundation last of all.

You might find good foundations in
B Brown
Clinique
Estee Lauder
Dior

Get colour matched and lots of samples.

The No 7 Instant Radiance highlighter is great on older skin that can begin to look dry under makeup. Watch some YouTube videos on how and where on the face to apply. Really makes a difference IMO.

Selkie1961 · 17/05/2021 20:23

Is that the lilac shimmer one? I think it is for darker skins. But add a drop of gold highlighter to yr make up if you're pale.

TheBullfinch · 17/05/2021 21:01

The MAC virtual try on doesn't work on iPhone now (it used to though) and they're ALWAYS sold out of the popular colours/products.

I also think there's a dearth of colours for those of us who aren't dark haired/dark eyed. Sigh.

Anyone found a solution to oily eyelids that doesnt look caked on and dry?

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 17/05/2021 21:16

Mellon and Keep ... thanks for those suggestions.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 17/05/2021 21:18

For a BB cream for lovely nourishing yet light coverage I can recommend Garnier. Love it. I'd seen it suggested here and by the awesome Justin Leconte on YouTube.

Smells lovely too.

mammmamia · 17/05/2021 21:23

I have used the Garnier BB cream for years and it is really good. Have tried other brands and always come back to this.

mammmamia · 17/05/2021 21:24

Sorry I meant to say I agree with @tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz !

At 47 and with slightly 'orange peely' skin my top tip is just work on skin with good hyaluronic/vit c and collagen moisturizer and just bin foundation. It's so hard to get it non cakey and sit in wrinkles. And if you have a slightly sallow skin tone, use cool bluey reds lip tint e.g. fuschia not 'warm' orangey reds. Also stick to tints and glosses not lipsticks if your lips are thin. Black or brown slightly smudgey eyeliner and mascara are my staples but only mascara top lashes, bottom ones just end up looking spidery and grow out your brows and get good at filling them in with tints or pencil.

diege · 18/05/2021 08:41

Garnier BB sounds good, though I have to say I'm pleased with my Aldi one(s).
I'd be starting to contemplate a bit of (non-sparkly) bronzer at this time of year as I'm so deathly pale (celtic colouring) but will see how I get on with the already-ordered Dandelion 🤔

diege · 18/05/2021 08:43

April my brows have given up I think! The best I can hope for is to tint and fill - they just don't seem to grow. Pleased with my Charlotte Tilbury eye pencil, but still look a bit...drawn on.

OP posts:
MotherOfGodWeeFella · 18/05/2021 08:47

Lots of short strokes with the pencil in the same direction as the eyebrow hairs you have are the key to not looking drawn on. If you find you can't get a result you're happy with then try a brow powder instead.

diege · 18/05/2021 08:56

That's interesting mother. I've been applying more upward strokes, which inevitably leaves me having to add more pencil to the sides...
Any recommendations for a powder if it comes to it?

AprilShowerThoughts · 18/05/2021 09:10

I've got a great brow tint which is basically like a mascara but for brows. It's a nameless brand from the Body Care shop and it cost about a quid but it's bloody marvellous Grin

diege · 18/05/2021 09:37

Is it a tint April (ie a dye) or make-up?
