Roman Originals

Looking for a sense check from S&B. I keep getting adverts on FB (I don't care if it's shit I like it) from Roman Originals. Some stuff looks quite good. I think there is one at our local shopping outlet place. Are they Ok or should I just accept my mid 50's frump shoot myself

I've found the odd thing in there that I've thought was quite stylish and unfrumpy.

TollgateDebs · 14/05/2021 18:15

You need to look hard, but I have a few items from Roman Originals. All well made, stylish cut and two are cotton, which is a rare commodity with some labels. A skirt was a real find and a much, much cheaper version of a designer skirt I hankered after.

chipsandpeas · 14/05/2021 18:17

i have a few things from there, i knew about the shops but seen ads on facebook as well and went for it and worked out good, i would say i find their sizing generous

Knowivedonewrong · 14/05/2021 18:17

I've bought my mother of the bride dress from Romans.
I'm 50 so it's not frumpy! I hope!

pinkcattydude · 14/05/2021 18:19

I’ve got one skirt from them and it’s gorgeous my favourite one. Yep lots of frumpy stuff but also so really nice bits and good prices

gingercat02 · 14/05/2021 18:20

That sounds promising might have a look thanks

I've had some really nice stuff from there. I was very sorry when our local branch closed.

NotMeNoNo · 14/05/2021 18:28

I particularly like that they still have a choice of more fitted clothes when everywhere else has gone flowery tent dress.

Charlottejbt · 14/05/2021 18:36

I just had a look and I'm pleasantly surprised. There were the usual granny clothes suspects like garish baggy tunics and waterfall cardigans, but the skirts and dresses were mainly quite attractive and wearable by under 60s. I'd certainly consider their stuff if it shipped to Europe, so thanks for the heads up!

@Knowivedonewrong I love Roman Originals and was thinking of getting my mother of the bride outfit there as sizing and quality is very good. What did you end up buying?

latedecember1963 · 14/05/2021 19:19

I have a number of items from Roman Originals. The quality is reasonable for the price and washes well.
If you are near a Boundary Mill they stock it a bit cheaper.

janlevinson · 14/05/2021 19:47

What the hell has happened to S&B? 🤯

goose1964 · 14/05/2021 20:00

There's some lovely stuff there, I had a gorgeous Sun dress from there, really flattering and they sold them in different colours for years, but as soon as the shirring on the back went they stopped making them.

Icequeen01 · 14/05/2021 20:21

Funnily enough I just took delivery of my first Romans Original sun dress today! It kept popping up on my FB and I finally gave in and ordered it. It actually looks surprisingly nice but I haven't tried it on yet.

Oh I do! Much closer. I usually only go to buy bin bags and towels

I had two jersey dresses from there about 8 years ago. I was worried they might be a bit 'frumpy' (as I don't know what that looks like!) but I had so many positive unsolicited comments from people about them. They also both washed really well too, and needed no ironing.

JaceLancs · 14/05/2021 21:54

It’s a mixture of ages and some are frumpy (to me)
I did buy some black stretchy trousers from there a while ago and they are so flattering every time I wear them someone comments on them
They also have had some lovely linen summer dresses in the past

Feedingthebirds1 · 14/05/2021 22:20

I have a Roman Originals dress (bought from Boundary Mill!) and when I've worn it, more than once I've been told I look like Audrey Hepburn. It can't be all bad!!!

RampantIvy · 15/05/2021 00:01

I have a couple of stretchy skirts that I wore a lot last summer and a black dress for going out in. My favourite item is a navy blue jacket which always gets me compliments when I wear it.

There is a lot of polyester and clothes that don't appeal to me, but the odd gem really makes up for wading through the other stuff.

Another vote for Boundary Mills.

janlevinson · 15/05/2021 07:21

Well it's my 83 yr old MIL's favourite shop so there's not a hope in hell I'd ever set foot through the door 😂

picklemewalnuts · 15/05/2021 07:24

I've had some great stuff, some of it a bit quirky. I've got a lovely fitted tunic that gets compliments everywhere. I can't find anything similar, or I'd get more!

latedecember1963 · 15/05/2021 07:56

I suspect one of the secrets to Roman's survival is that it doesn't just target one niche market.
Last Friday I'd taken my MiL for an audiology appointment. On the way back to the car we called into Roman for a quick browse. I spotted a top in the sale that I'll wear for work that wouldn't be to her taste and she got a sweater with embroidered flowers around the yolk that I wouldn't give a second glance to.
We also had a look around M&S but we both declared it dull. My MiL is coming up for 89 and doesn't want to dress head to toe in beige and sage green.

TheMagicFarawaySea · 15/05/2021 08:03

Their jeggings are amazing!!!! All the other stuff is pretty bad but the jeggings are the best I've found

LubaLuca · 15/05/2021 08:14

I've had a couple of things from there, work trousers and dresses. They're one of the few shops still open in the little town I work in, so it's a bit of Hobson's choice, but the quality is good for the price. You just need to look past the 'cruise wear'.
