Tw*t in a hat?

doorornottodoor · 11/05/2021 09:29

Anyone else feel ridiculous in one?

I need something to wear in the garden/walking about/UK beach and also on holiday. I hate the annoyance of a big hat. Hard to carry, gets blown off, screams look at me. But I need to keep the sun off my face.

Anyone else feel like a twat in a hat? What do you wear? Help!

PS I don’t mean others look like twats wearing hats, just me. I am envious of stylish hat wearers. 😎

MrsBunHat here :o I like a hat, but I know what you mean about feeling self conscious. OTOH when it's hot and bright a sunhat feels really nice and brings a lot of relief, and I think they can look good.

I recently got this one from Weekday for this summer:
hat and they have some other nice ones too.

IMHO what you want is a bucket-style hat, with a bit of a brim for shade but not a huge floppy brim. Cream is a great colour as it goes with everything, likewise any neutral beige or khaki colour, but I like some print ones too. Natural fabric and a worn-in look is good - I feel more comfortable in a casual looking hat and avoid anything that looks too formal or weddingy.

They can blow off but if that's a worry you can get them with a tie, or just sew in a tie made of ribbon or cotton webbing tape.
here's one with a tie, hmmm i quite like this too.

MrsBunHat · 11/05/2021 09:40

Actually scratch that as I've just seen it's polyester but you get the idea.

doorornottodoor · 11/05/2021 09:43

Thank you @MrsBunHat haha!!! I hadn’t thought of a bucket hat. I will see if I can find one to try.

I live in a hot country and wear a wide brimmed hat I really don't think people care. I wear it to protect from the sun. Not to have people "look at me".

Imtoooldforallthis · 11/05/2021 10:23

I too look ridiculous in a hat, bucket hats are the worst, and all hats are difficult if you wear your hair up, sun visors are the only answer, but they look ridiculous too.

doorornottodoor · 11/05/2021 10:23

I was only teasing @ZaraW Grin I just feel very conspicuous in one. Probably because I’m Scottish and only need to wear one for a short time period every year and on holiday. I’m sure I’d embrace it/get used to it if I needed to wear one every day.

Love your thread title Grin

Toast usually do a good range of interesting hats: www.toa.st/collections/womens-hats-scarves-gloves

@Imtoooldforallthis haha- yes!!!

I also can’t wear a bucket hat, having been young in the 90’s, just feels like I’m reliving my stone roses youth.
I do feel self conscious in a sun hat, simply because hardly anyone wears one in this country, but I do need one so I wear a straw fedora which does look nice

BikeRunSki · 11/05/2021 10:49

I wear a straw trilby style hat in the sun.

Boood · 11/05/2021 10:50

I love a hat. And am firmly of the opinion that no hat looks as foolish as the aftermath of a sunburnt parting, so I wear one in the sun as a matter of course. I find a panama type is the best for giving a decent amount of shade but not flopping in your eyes all the time.

ODFOx · 11/05/2021 11:00

Different hats for different face shapes, like glasses.
To keep the sun out of my eyes the only shape I've found that I don't feel too stupid in is a flat topped cap with a stiff peak, like an army cap, but in less military colours. No protection for my neck though, which you'd get from a brim all the way round.

doorornottodoor · 11/05/2021 11:00

Thank you.

Yes, I did have a nice panama then someone took a photo of me wearing it on a ferry in Greece and I felt a complete idiot after that. Grin

I think the issue is definitely that not many people wear them here. So you stand out. But yes sunburn is not a good look and I’m very vain about my skin Grin

I have a straw summer hat with a wide brim that I love wearing. I think the best thing to do is try on lots of hats and see what suits you. TK Maxx usually have a good selection in store.

This is similar to my sunhat, though mine is rigid rather than floppy rimmed.

Sorry for the enormous link, I don't know how to make it smaller.

Miseryisabutterfly · 11/05/2021 11:45

I feel like a twat in any kind of hat. Envious of those who look good in one. The one time I dared to wear a beanie (it was a particularly cold day) I heard someone behind me say bowling ball and laugh, I immediately knew they were talking about my head!

doorornottodoor · 11/05/2021 11:52

@Miseryisabutterfly sorry I shouldn’t laugh. Grin I have a big head too. I have to get a black ski helmet and always pick the L size sticker off the back Grin

WineGetsMeThroughIt · 11/05/2021 11:58

I love a hat, but I have an oddly small head (mostly noticeable when I have my hair up). I have a couple hats that I wear - love beanies, and find that I need a very specific shaped hat with a rounded top and a wider brim to suit my face shape. I love the felt and straw fedoras I've been seeing lately, but the top of the hat is just too high, pointy and structured for me. Never been hugely keen on bucket hats despite owning one or two in the 90's. The one from Weekday that a PP linked was really nice though. I might see if they suit me again.

Just a note that Accessorize actually has quite a few nice styles in at the moment. Sadly none that suited me though.

Spudlet · 11/05/2021 12:03

I also dislike wearing hats but feel I need to because I have red hair and burn to a crisp at a moments notice. I have baseball caps for running which look awful but keep the sun off my face at least. And a straw-type fedora which I bought at the beach a couple of years ago. The trouble is it’s been squashed a few times so it is a bit floppy and misshapen now 😬

Miseryisabutterfly · 11/05/2021 12:08

@doorornottodoor that’s the thing though, I wasn’t even aware that I did have a big head 😂

ambereeree · 11/05/2021 12:23

I have a big head too and thick hair. As I walk I feel the hat creeping up only to fall off my head.

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 11/05/2021 12:36

I have a big head, but I love hats: don't get enough opportunity to wear them. I'd go for a straw Panama or wide brimmed straw hat or a baseball cap. Bucket hats are grim, especially the ones with ties unless on a baby. If a hat is falling off, it doesn't fit.

MaudesMum · 11/05/2021 13:42

I also look like a twat in a hat - in fact the only hat I don't look like a twat in is a beret, which is surprisingly ineffective in warmer weather. Actually, there was one panama once, but it wasn't until I was walking around Croatia in the summer that I realised some idiot had lined it with nylon. Helpful.

midsomermurderess · 11/05/2021 14:01

I like this bucket hat from other stories.
