Tw*t in a hat?

doorornottodoor · 11/05/2021 09:29

Anyone else feel ridiculous in one?

I need something to wear in the garden/walking about/UK beach and also on holiday. I hate the annoyance of a big hat. Hard to carry, gets blown off, screams look at me. But I need to keep the sun off my face.

Anyone else feel like a twat in a hat? What do you wear? Help!

See I think bucket hat doesn't have to mean 90s style - if it has a very small, quite vertical brim (and a smiley on it :o) then yes, but if they're in a different material like straw or raffia, or they tweak the shape (like this lovely [https://www.mytheresa.com/en-gb/erdem-romney-floral-bucket-hat-1793824.html?utm_source=sea_pla&utm_medium=google&utm_campaign=google_sea&ef_id=CjwKCAjw1uiEBhBzEiwAO9B_HZFLllqXsqd_XA72PoEB4KR9q6jIAWniGN9X40XLykuSIejNqMP6ihoCG8YQAvD_BwE:G:s&&gclid=CjwKCAjw1uiEBhBzEiwAO9B_HZFLllqXsqd_XA72PoEB4KR9q6jIAWniGN9X40XLykuSIejNqMP6ihoCG8YQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds erdem one but it's £££££]] ), they can lose the 90s vibe.

Agree face shape make a difference too though.

Oops don't know what went wrong with my linky there

Everyoneknows · 11/05/2021 14:38

That third picture in your link made me laugh! How would she see where she’s walking?

mistermagpie · 11/05/2021 14:40

I really suit hats but still feel a bit silly wearing them!

I have a straw trilby for the summer though and I like that, the cotton type bucket hats look pretty much identical to the hats my very young children wear and that puts me off them. Id love to float about in a glob by brimmed straw number but I don't think I wear the right clothes for it, I'm more shorts and t-shirt than boho chic...

Yes that third look is strictly for lounging in a hammock reading Vogue.

I have a big straw hat (the type donkeys wear on the beach) if that helps Grin

I’m sorry but that “whimsical” hat from Erdem at £215. Looks like something my granny would have worn. I know that’s rude but £215 ffs. I’m too Scottish for fashion I think Grin

Other stories ones look good. I would need to get to a shop though...

I carry a parasol - I look daft in most hats apart from berets not very summery

MrsBunHat · 11/05/2021 15:43

I like the Erdem one! I'd never spend £215 on a hat - apart from anything else I'd probably lose it - but it has inspired me to try to make something similar. I may realise it wasn't a good idea if I walk into a lamppost.

I have bought some nice wide but not floppy brimmed hats from hats and caps website (I think the company is called Village Hats). I always feel self conscious in a hat, but last summer on a scorching hot day I had a seizure whilst on a walk and I do wonder if it was brought on by heatstroke so now I don't care what I look like!

I also have a very small head so buying from a specialist hat site means I can buy small sized hats which don't drown me!

CatChant · 11/05/2021 16:49

I second the Village Hats website for wide-brimmed, affordable sun hats. I've been buying from them for years and yes, I do think I look like a total twat in a hat. But I am prone to melasma and I would rather look like a twat than have a piebald face. After all, I can take the hat off sometimes. Melasma patches are not so easy to get rid of.

Snoopysimaginaryfriend · 11/05/2021 19:58

I have one like the other stories hat. I bought it from cos last year. I think it looks nice. Nicer than sunburn anyway

NigellaSeed · 11/05/2021 20:22

OP I feel you.

I wear a plain black baseball cap - I am not sporty - but I feel sporty/ Nicola Kidman on a Sunday getting papped whilst out jogging, when I wear it with sleek casual clothes.

But, the baseball cap can really ruin a prettier outfit.

I have a wide brim straw hat that looks good in a summery outfit.

But I need something for in-between outfits - not too beachy - not too outdoorsy. Preferably that goes with and without a coat as I protect my face when it's cloudy! Lol

NigellaSeed · 11/05/2021 20:36

Ooh I'm looking at village hats on hatandcaps.com - good shout PP! :)
