I don't understand jeans anymore

custardlover · 09/05/2021 16:36

Help me please! I just want to wear a pair of jeans that are both flattering and comfortable - is that possible? I am 5'9 and size 10/12 with a very chunky bottom half; legs, hips, bum. I really want something which is flattering and shaper on the tum but then loose and comfy on the legs. Any ideas?

I really like Boden jeans

NakedBanana · 09/05/2021 16:41

I have a similar comment ... I can't fit into jeans anymore!

S'pose could buy some larger sizes, but I've been Googling Hoodie dresses, they seem more more comfortable now I'm a 3 sizes larger than January! 🙄

Wizzbangfizz · 09/05/2021 16:51

I don't understand jeans either especially mom jeans? Confused

UnreasonablyPissedOff · 09/05/2021 16:55

I've bought Sezane Francky jeans & I love them. It's a total departure from skinny jeans for me!

TabbyStar · 09/05/2021 18:12

I saw M&S jeans recommended, the Sophia and Sienna, so I went to look and I actually like their girlfriend jeans, but you can't try them on yet and I didn't want to make another journey to return them, so I have no idea what they'd actually be like! Jean styles seem to have proliferated!

One of DD's friends wore what she called dad jeans, which looked nice.

Hereforthedramaz · 09/05/2021 18:20

Ooh very interested to hear people's responses on this. I'm pear (bordering on hourglass sometimes) and struggle with all trousers including jeans.

I don't feel like I've ever found MY Jean type and all the boyfriend and mum Jean styles scare me!

I'm in the process of losing weight and one of my milestone rewards is to go to a big JL for a jeans personal shopping session so they can help work out what's good for me!

MissyB1 · 09/05/2021 18:28

I'm short and skinny, and in my 50s, I also really struggle with knowing what jeans to wear. I used to wear straight but they aren't cut the same anymore, skinny look totally ridiculous on me.

I've recently bought a pair of bootcut and a pair of girlfriend (silly name!) both from fat face, I like them both (although I don't love them as such).

TheABC · 09/05/2021 18:30

I'm another who has wandered around the jeans section shaking her head. I am a short, hourglass shape and every sodding model in the shops seems to have thighs the size of my calves. I don't want ripped jeans with pre-frayed edges that appear to be applied to me with a hairdryer! It's bad enough trying to look neat at the best of times.

I held out hope at M&S but I am not about to sink £100+ into jeans without trying them on first (changing rooms shut). What's everybody else doing?

Nightbear · 09/05/2021 18:32

Some of the best fits I’ve had from jeans have been when I was between sizes and the ‘skinny’ jeans I’d bought looked more like straight leg on me. Your ideal pair might be a 14 from a shop that has tiny sizing or a size 8 relaxed fit from somewhere that does generous sizes. You need to try stuff on.

Cotswoldmama · 09/05/2021 19:10

I loved skinny jeans, I still like them but mom jeans are the best especially if you gave a small high waist but bigger hips. I just bought a pair of these

They are so perfect I ordered another pair in a different colour. And the sizing is bang on.

5128gap · 09/05/2021 19:17

If you have a defined waist, try levi straight leg ribcage. You size them by your real waist measurement, they cinch in at the waist then are more roomy over hips and thighs, but without aches of bulky denim.

Love river island straight leg jeans at the minute. Mom jeans are too baggy on my thighs, high waist jeans fit me awfully and I'm so over skinny fit 🤷‍♀️

custardlover · 09/05/2021 19:22

I think we all need to take a type, go and try it on and report back! I like the idea of the mom jeans but not if they balloon around the belly because that never looks good... but willing to try and do a book report!

I'm somewhat similar in size and shape as to you ( although more 12/14) and thought M&S Sophia jeans were great - also absolutely loved their high waist comfy cotton jeggings. Was gutted when they both died chub rub deaths in absolute record time - each only lasted a couple of months. DP thinks it's worth spending more but am not convinced.

ChubbyLittleManInACampervan · 09/05/2021 20:34

I like the HM mom jeans linked above

These are really good for tall pear-shape

Fitted on hips/bum with nice long loose legs. Comfy and look cool imo

There's really no other way with jeans than trying on. Usually many many pairs.
There's loads of styles about just now, which is good on the one hand for finding something to suit. But on the other hand, after the near total dominance of skinnies for so long it can take a bit of getting used to other shapes.

PandoraP · 10/05/2021 08:22

@ChubbyLittleManInACampervan, those are great jeans.

honeybuns007 · 10/05/2021 08:28

I'm struggling to see how you could have a very chunky bottom half; legs, hips, bum if you are 5'9" 10/12

Beachcomber · 10/05/2021 10:28

I've just bought a pair of Levis 501 crop and they are really nice.
Highish waist (higher than it looks in the picture) , bit of room for the bum and thighs, straight leg, slightly cropped so don't look old fashioned. 99% cotton so they feel like proper jeans.
I'm 5'2 so I got the 26 inch leg but they have a 28 and 30 leg too.
I bought this colour and I like them so much I'm getting a grey pair too.

www.levi.com/GB/en_GB/shop-all/501-levis-crop-jeans/p/362000157

Their returns are very good. I often by 2 or 3 sizes to make sure I'm getting a good fit.

Beachcomber · 10/05/2021 10:34

Their ribcage jeans look lovely too. I think I'm a bit short to carry them off but they'd be really cool on someone taller.

www.levi.com/GB/en_GB/shop-all/ribcage-straight-ankle-jeans/p/726930079

I only really wear Levis jeans nowadays. They're not cheap but they are well cut, flattering and wear very well.

Zinnia · 10/05/2021 10:50

@honeybuns007 I know exactly what the OP means; I'm the same height and even when I am a size 12 (not at the moment!) my lower half is big. It's proportional.

FWIW I get on well with M&S mom jeans, but agree it's a nightmare finding a pair without trying on. JL changing rooms are open at the moment, and you can do click & collect to most M&S food shops, and return there too if that's any help.

These looks good. Can you tell me if the turn-up is turn-downable, or is it fixed by a stitch? Turn-ups do not help me in my quest to give the illusion of longer legs! Smile

Is it just me, or is that also a really unhelpful picture?

I don't understand jeans either and giving everything a stupid name doesn't help.

someonelockthefridgealready · 10/05/2021 11:05

I can't do mom jeans, at all. Skinnies have never looked good on me. I am trying some straight jeans, but I'd really like to find wide-leg that are not cropped and are not as wide as clown trousers.

I am a definite pear, have no waist, but weirdly narrow hips - all my weight is on my thighs which are also weirdly long. Trousers are always a nightmare for me!
