I've got a Rachel haircut!

I had a much needed post-lockdown cut last week and it looked so lovely, all choppy and blow dried. However, on trying to recreate this look after washing it myself it has settled into a Rachel. I'm a grey, nearly 50 yo with a Rachel cut. I'm no good with hair, this cut was an alternative to the bob I've had for the last 30 years. Any suggestions on what I can do to erm... look less like a 50 yo with a 90s hairdo?

Can you share a photo (being nosey...)

ClingFilmAndGafferTape · 30/04/2021 00:32

I would @strangestranger but it's a bit too identifying - sorry

I'm not far off 50 and was given the same haircut but I really like mine!

What's a Rachel cut

Glad it's not just me wondering that? Grin

i would ask the hairdresser for advice on how to style it. Apparently Jennifer Aniston hated it because it was so hard to maintain

amusedtodeath1 · 30/04/2021 01:24

Oh I can remember spending ages everyday trying to style that cut back in the day. I still think it looks nice, though. Maybe it's time it made a come back, wouldn't surprise me if it did tbh, Friends is popular again I think.

Any suggestions on what I can do?

Rock it! 90s are back in a big way. You're ahead of the curve.

fallfallfall · 30/04/2021 03:33

it's a rather timeless cut, sorry i don't see it screaming any decade.

TheChosenTwo · 30/04/2021 07:56

I don’t think this is an ageing cut? It’s just layers isn’t it? Confused

LizzieSiddal · 30/04/2021 07:58

There’s nothing wrong with shoulder length hair with layers. That’s all it is, isn’t it? You see hair like that everywhere.

QueenAdreena · 30/04/2021 08:00

Can’t really see the fuss if I’m honest...I have friends in their 20’s and 30’s who could be described as having a ‘Rachel’...but all it really is is a layered cut that the hairdresser has given them to flatter their face shape. It doesn’t scream ‘dated’ to me.

Brandnewnotepad · 30/04/2021 08:04

If you google ‘is the Rachel hair cut back’ you get a bazillion hits which basically say ‘yes. yes it is’. So I think you are now at the forefront of hair fashion - congratulations.
Ps for what it’s worth I remember a paddle brush being key to styling it back in the 90s.

Starstruck2021 · 30/04/2021 08:07

Can you just get the layered ends trimmed off so it looks more blunt?

I’ve definitely got a Rachel as well but it looks different if I change the parting. Try it in a middle parting?

StCharlotte · 30/04/2021 08:13

It really wouldn't. I'm still waiting for my post-lockdown cut and my previously shortcut has grown into a "Rachel", as indeed it did last year. To be fair I had that cut throughout the 90s and loved it so I feel all young again Smile
StCharlotte · 30/04/2021 08:19

Here you go.

UhtredRagnarson · 30/04/2021 08:20

I’ll bet it’s lovey OP!!

Shelovesamystery · 30/04/2021 08:57

I have the same after my post lock down haircut. It's not what I imagined when I was telling the hairdresser what I wanted but tbf I should have been more specific. I'm going to get the ends trimmed off so the layers are more subtle.

This pic is what I wanted but I've definitely ended up with a Rachel Sad

Oooh - I'm a trend setter! I can totally rock it. I just wish I had her sunkissed waves (and figure).

God this comment makes me feel so old Grin
SingingSands · 30/04/2021 13:14

I had 'Rachel' cuts for years and they really suited me. Not as short as those photos though, a bit longer. Then they became unfashionable and I stopped asking for them for fear of ... I don't know, being laughed at?!

Anyway, I'm now older and have outgrown that fear so I'll be asking for a layered cut as soon as I can get back to the hairdresser.

Forestiere · 30/04/2021 13:17

Oooh I had a Rachel back in the day and loved it. Makes me feel old that it was so long ago! I liked it because it always looked 'done' You may start a new trend op!!

Fruityfriday · 30/04/2021 13:23

I had the 90's Natalie Imbuglia cut from the Torn video. I was young, had cheekbones and collarbone. I've got a few more chins and a saggy neck now, but god I'd love that cut again

CoolShoeshine · 01/05/2021 07:37

The presenters on good morning Britain were comparing Susannah Reid’s new cut to a Rachel. It looked very nice.

UpAt5amAgain · 01/05/2021 08:01

The key was tie up the top layer while you dried the bottom layer to flick out. Then you dried the top layer to flick in. Top marks were awarded to leaving actual space between the layers Grin

The coolest girls I knew had the bottom layer dyed one shade and the top layer dyed another. I was so jealous of them.
