I've got a Rachel haircut!

I had a much needed post-lockdown cut last week and it looked so lovely, all choppy and blow dried. However, on trying to recreate this look after washing it myself it has settled into a Rachel. I'm a grey, nearly 50 yo with a Rachel cut. I'm no good with hair, this cut was an alternative to the bob I've had for the last 30 years. Any suggestions on what I can do to erm... look less like a 50 yo with a 90s hairdo?

Just lost my post... how annoying.

I don’t like the cut dried with so much volume on the crown but it’s probably very versatile. You can texturise the sides with products and use straighteners on the ends if it starts looking a bit Anthea Turner.

What's a Rachel cut

God this comment makes me feel so old grin

It not only made me feel old, it made my 26 year old daughter feel old Smile

Seeing as mullets and shag haircuts are apparently now "in", you're probably ahead of the game with your Rachel!

Be glad you didn't end up with an unintended mullet Grin

I had this done to me (twice 😫) a couple of years ago... my hair just mustn’t like layers!
The first time was terrible and mulletly and I was so upset I had it all cut off into a short Bob. Basically the layers were so short that’s all that could be done.
The second time the layers were longer so I put up With it for 8 weeks and then got it trimmed and stressed nothing off the layers and they grew out themselves.

I had one 25 years ago just after I got married. It’s a flattering cut but I found it too time consuming to maintain.
Have you tried playing around with it and putting different bits behind your ears?

thewinehasgonetomyhead · 01/05/2021 19:18

You need a revlon or babyliss hot air brush. This will help recreate how your hairdresser styled it.

SmileyClare · 01/05/2021 19:26

That sort of cut is really flattering.
However....it needs styling. It's never too late to nail this Op!

You need to towel dry and apply a good serum to lengths and ends, blow dry as straight as possible. Then clip up the top section, glide straighteners through the bottom sections, flicking up very slightly at the ends. Then unclip top sections and run straighteners through tucking under slightly.

It sounds like a palava but should only take 20 minutes once you get familiar with it.

Of course you don't need to style it every day but that's how to recreate the "Hi I just got out of the hairdressers. You think I look like Rachel from Friends? Haha thanks " look Smile

I think the Rachel haircut is brilliant- I actually find it frustrating that hairdressers are reluctant to do it now - I always get very blended layers when I'm really after that really choppy Rachel look . I'm
Also very low maintenance and always thought that was the great thing about that haircut that you didn't really have to do much with it

lulupooh · 01/05/2021 19:41

Most of the haircuts I've ever had have turned into Rachel from friends hair, I hate it so much. I would like an edgy shaggy feminine mulletish type cut but I know I'd probably end up with Rachel hair again. (My name is Rachel though...)

Mrsdarwin · 01/05/2021 19:44

I love this hair style, rock it! I’m sure you look amazing!

thisplaceisweird · 01/05/2021 19:44

Get a babyliss big hair, or the revlon one with a flatter barrel for an easy way to dry and style. It gives 90s volume and bounce, and a big of a flick/curl, without too much effort.

Tenpintonpin · 01/05/2021 19:47

@Fruityfriday

I had the 90's Natalie Imbuglia cut from the Torn video. I was young, had cheekbones and collarbone. I've got a few more chins and a saggy neck now, but god I'd love that cut again
Me too! I bloody loved that haircut. Keep hoping it comes back into fashion...
ElphabaTWitch · 01/05/2021 19:57

Think it’s a lovely haircut.

NoseOfJericho · 01/05/2021 20:24

I remember the Rachel cut. It reminds me of someone growing out a massacred head of hair, not managing to do anything with the fringe, and torturing the hair into place with superglue and varnish.

I also remember the shag, which resembled a floppy mop if not cut well and a better shaped mop if it was.

Layers can be a bastard to maintain.
