Would you wear navy and black together?

Would you wear black trousers and a navy top?
Or black bottoms and a chocolate brown top?
I have fixed ideas, and I wonder if I'm too rigid.

As a cool winter, I often wear both black/navy and black/chocolate brown together. My winter "uniform" (the thing I tend to wear at least 3/5 working days) is a pair of black trousers with an M&S polo neck ribbed jumper over it. I have 3 black, 2 navy, 1 chocolate brown, 1 pillar box red, 1 mid grey and 1pine green of these jumpers. And a relatively similar range of Land's End plain round necked long sleeved tops with no brown but more green (2 shades) and red (2 shades), some white, a teal and a regal purple version as well. But I have 2 pairs of 1 style of black trouser, and a few other black trousers as well.

I have recently started to get some navy trousers, and most of these tops mix well with those too. I would like a brown pair of trousers but can't find a nice one.

I don't always add anything to it, but most days have a nice necklace or a scarf to tie them together, and I have a few bolero cardigans to go over the lighter tops if I need an extra layer. And a few jackets too.
(And I have a bunch of matching coloured vests for underneath on cooler days - I know I could just have black or skin colour, but why not match when the colours are available?)

No, never have and never would.

ExConstance · 27/04/2021 09:45

A lighter brown, tan or camel, worn as maybe a cashmere jumper with a black skirt can look good, I'd normally add a black necklace to emphasise the combination. Black and navy too - but these combinations only work if it is clear they are intentional and not the result of an early morning rummage in the bottom of the laundry bin.

Re the shoes I don't own nude or navy shoes. Not sure I have any brown either however I don't have to be smart for work so this is very much how I wear black & navy.

Would you wear navy and black together?
BringMeTea · 27/04/2021 10:43

Yes.

NoSiree · 27/04/2021 11:10

That looks great @rarat!

I honestly think most colour combinations can work, depending on how it's done.

I don't like black and navy together on me, as I think it tips the whole look from neutral/warm to neutral/cool. When I do it anyway. I am definitely warm toned and I don't normally suit black, unless it's very rich (if that's the right word) in tone. So I steer clear of it altogether. The rest of my wardrobe is warmer, so adding black in, which I've tried before, doesn't really work somehow. I also have a small, capsule wardrobe, so I can't afford to have pieces in there which don't work with everything else.

CheeseAndHackers · 27/04/2021 13:28

Black trousers with a navy silk top is one of my favourite work outfits.

ZaraW · 27/04/2021 13:37

Navy and black when done well looks amazing. I would never take style advice from my mum and granny.

Oly4 · 27/04/2021 13:49

Yes

cannaethink · 27/04/2021 14:10

I never wear black and navy together. I just don’t think it works! I hardly wear any black though anyway. I’ve got a pair of faded black jeans but will only wear them with light grey or dark green tops. I also won’t wear black footwear with blue jeans. All my boots are brown. My trainers are navy, green, burgundy, white etc. Obviously I can’t wear my navy trainers with my black jeans 😱 but I happily wear brown boots with black jeans...
As for smart shoes to wear with navy trousers, I have tan or navy. I wear trainers or boots for work though so it’s pretty much just interviews that I’d need to wear them.

littlepeas · 27/04/2021 14:39

Yes!

Also agree with the poster that said black with most other colours looks dreadful, loved the comparison to liquorice all sorts.

Black and navy look chic together as long as it is done well. My mum used to say not to mix them and she is definitely not someone I’d go to for fashion advice!

rarat · 27/04/2021 16:30

Thanks @NoSiree!

I also won’t wear black footwear with blue jeans

I wasn't counting blue jeans as navy but I pretty much live in blue jeans & black shoes whether they are heels, sandals, ballet pumps, trainers.

Toilenstripes · 27/04/2021 16:34

Agree with the pp who said you need to use luxe fabrics when combining navy and black. It’s a matter of knowing how to break the rules versus not knowing the rules to begin with.

Pinkcadillac · 27/04/2021 16:45

Yes, IMO it looks very chic . Now pink and black, that's a difficult one. So is brown and black

LadyEloise · 16/05/2021 10:43

I wear a lot of black and a lot of navy but not together.
I would love a pair of shoes that are black and navy** so could be worn with either.

VanillaAndOrange · 16/05/2021 12:15

I like black and brown together but I'm not sure about black and navy. Unless you have an item patterned in both colours, like in rarat's picture, I think it could look like you picked up the wrong top by mistake when the light wasn't very good. Black and some shades of deep blue go well together, just don't go too dark with the blue.

AsCoolAsKimDeal · 16/05/2021 12:20

I know black and navy is meant to be chic nowadays but it just looks wrong. I never wear brown.

AsCoolAsKimDeal · 16/05/2021 12:22

Black and navy don't clash but it looks like you've got dressed in the dark.

StarlightLady · 16/05/2021 16:30

Generally speaking, no! The one exception is that l would wear a navy top with black jeans. But black jeans are not usually jet black.

MerlinsButler · 16/05/2021 18:51

When I had my colours done years ago my stylist said as a Dark Winter that Black and Navy were my best neutrals but that it was all about luxe fabrics. So for example a lovely navy silk shirt and a black leather skirt look great. Or a black leather skirt with a rich navy jumper etc. She said the textures should be different to show that it was a deliberate outfit and that I hadn't accidentally put black jeans and a blue jersey top on in the dark.

The Navy needs to be a rich navy rather than a very dark almost black navy though.
