What size is your 13yo Dd?

My dd is 5ft5 and weighs 9st7.

She’s not fat but is getting wider hips/boobs, she also has chunky thighs (she horse rides).

She is really upset as I bought her a pair of “mom” jeans yesterday in a size 10 (her normal size) and they didn’t do up so I swapped them for a 12.
She had a pair of size 8 snd they were getting abit tight.

She’s a size 8/10 on top.

What size is your dd?

If she's doing horse riding I'm guessing she's fairly fit and active so that's all that matters really

It’s not just the horse riding it’s the hours of shit shovelling, grooming, unloading hay wagons....

O/p the other thing I don’t think has been mentioned is that teens still growing often do it differently.... some will put on weight and then grow, others will grow, look superskinny, then put on the weight to match their new height. Some grow at a steady rate so it’s not noticeable, others have huge growth spurts so weight going on before is very obvious.

Keep her interested in the horses, fit and active, her actual weight is not really relevant :).

What's the family diet like? I would focus more on setting a really good example of balanced eating, meals at the table, homecooked food, fibre, variety, gut healthy foods etc than worrying about dress sizes, you want to set her up with good habits for life

Bookmarket · 21/04/2021 07:29

Mine wore a size 10 at 13. Now at age 15 and post-lockdown, she's just squeezed in to a size 12. She started her periods early in Year 7 and has seemed bigger, all over, than her peers for some time. She was a tall, big framed baby and toddler, although has not grown beyond 5' 5" post-puberty. I keep hoping she might grow a little more, as I grew another inch after secondary school. I want DD to feel happy with the way she looks but clothes rarely fit her well as they are designed for the straight up and down size 6-8 teen, like my older Dd, who can wear anything.
@oohmyback where did you buy those jeans for your DD?

oohmyback · 21/04/2021 07:32

Next, they are tapered jeans (like 80s mom style) and have an elasticated waist! I wasn't sure if she'd wear them but she liked them! They also have nice ones in m and s with stretch denim. I have some in my size and they fit great! Prob even a tiny bit too stretchy!

Karmatime · 21/04/2021 07:37

13 is a really difficult age to draw comparisons. I had my height and weight recorded on my school report and was under 5 foot and about 6 stone. All my friends were bigger than me. By the time I was 16 I was 5’7 and about 9 stone and I think a size 10-12 (which is probably 8-10 now, I’m going back decades). Suddenly I was bigger than all those friends.

minniemomo · 21/04/2021 07:43

They very a lot, one of mine is size 6, the other is size 10, both early 20's. The key key thing is to provide a healthy balanced diet, they don't eat too many treats when out with friends and they do exercise - they should then be a healthy weight for their height. Bmi for a teenager should be at the lower end of normal I was told eg 18-20, we've been under the dietitian on and off

uhtredsonofuhtred1 · 21/04/2021 07:48

My daughter weighs around 9 stone and is 5ft 5. She mostly wears size 8 but after her trip to primark at the weekend she has realised that sizing in shops can be absolutely ridiculous! She bought a size Large pyjama bottoms and they're quite tight on her! Luckily it doesn't bother her at all and she sees how stupid it is

Goodtohear · 21/04/2021 07:50

Dn is a size 12 in contrast my dd is still in a aged 11-12 year old. Neither are overweight, both just in proportion.
Your dd sounds fine for her height.

MrsPnut · 21/04/2021 07:55

My daughter needed size 12 school trousers last September when she was 14.2 and when she tried them on ready to go back in March, they were massive and I needed to buy her a 10 and even those need a belt to stay up.
No change to eating habits and no exercise done during lockdown but I think she grew a bit and stretched. She’s back to rugby training now so will get a bit fitter.

Camdenish · 21/04/2021 08:01

the percentiles are about children not adult women. You’ll find them in the child’s red book or on the NHS website. I’m not sure when they were created but they aren’t recent so don’t show a recent trend d towards obesity. They are what the NHs used to check if children are growing as they should. A child’s BMI may be calculated from them. I’m often hard of thinking but I think I’ve got this correct.

RoseZinfandel · 21/04/2021 08:18

My 13 year old has always been very narrow-framed. Most of her adult close female relatives are a straight bodied 8-10 (apart from me, at a curvy 12), and she seems to be taking after them, not me.

She's a 6, but wouldn't wear mom jeans as she'd say they were too tight, it's the way they are cut.
She hates high waistbands and stiff fabrics, and prefers things to be baggy.

Everyone has cuts and styles that work better for them, and the main thing is to be comfortable in your clothes, and it doesn't matter which size you have to buy in individual shops.

JurassicShay · 21/04/2021 08:24

My dd 13 is xxxs on top or a 4 (we still often get her tops in the children's section) & a 6 on bottom & weighs 7 stone but she's 4 ft 5 and pear shaped with size 3 feet!

I was a 8/10 at her age and had a big bust unlike Dd. She's also gone through puberty so we're just hoping she will still get taller!

At 13 no girl is the same just like no adult woman is same.

Bul21ia · 21/04/2021 08:27

I was around that weight too at that age I’m shorter though OP. I think it’s fine.

I’m more a less the same size now size 10 in tops and 12 in a trousers and I’m 30!

SwayingInTime · 21/04/2021 08:30

I think my 13 year old sounds exactly the same size as your DD. Her sister is 15 and tiny, both shorter and barely a size 6. It is so difficult to know what to feed us all together!

fizbosshoes · 21/04/2021 08:31

My DD is 14 and 5ft 1. Shes about 7st 4 and is about size 4 or 6.
I was shorter at that age (and still am!Sad) and probably weighed 5.5-6st then. I had an ED as a teen and didnt weigh 7st until I was in my 20s.

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 21/04/2021 08:40

My DD is 12.5 and 5' and probably a size 4-6. We don't possess a scale. Dd eats like a bird though.

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 21/04/2021 08:41

She hit puberty almost 2 years ago so had properly developed. Wide jobs. Full boobs etc.

mymymy0 · 21/04/2021 08:44

That sounds about right. Obviously everyone is different, but I'm 5' 3" and 9st 4 (ish), 34E, and am a size 10

Thisismynewname123 · 21/04/2021 08:51

My dd is 14 and 5'7". She very much has a woman's body, whereas some of her friends still look like girls, without very much shape at all. It makes comparisons very difficult, when she gets upset that her friends all wear a size 8. She put on some weight over lockdown, and I have just had to buy her a pair of jeans in a size 12. I don't want to discuss it and make her paranoid, but I'm hoping she'll naturally drop back to a 10 now that she's back in school, activities are back on so she's doing some sport again and won't be snacking as much now that she's not stuck at home. I don't really know what's "normal" (I have no idea what she weighs) but she looks like a healthy size for a woman (as opposed to a girl), although I do think she could lose a few pounds. I would never tell her that.

Bookmarket · 21/04/2021 09:53

@Thedarksideofthemoon30
That's where I am with my DD. I'm also hoping back at school and some sport will help. I've also put on a few lbs this winter lockdown. We generally find it easier to eat more belt food in spring and summer too, salads and nice fruit being in abundance.

Divineswirls · 21/04/2021 10:01

My DD is 5' 4' and is a size 4-6.
She is a 32 C and has good size bum as it were.
She eats what she likes but has a small appetite. She has a sweet tooth but I do cook normal healthy food as well as the occasional pizza, nuggets and chips.

Divineswirls · 21/04/2021 10:04

I was the same size as DD at her age

Echobelly · 21/04/2021 10:06

DD is nearly 13, 5ft2ish (just got taller than me), about 2 years into puberty and takes a size 8.

At her age I was barely into puberty and wearing kids age 10-11 clothes as I was tiny!

Divineswirls · 21/04/2021 10:08

Forgot to add DD is 13

LouNatics · 21/04/2021 10:17

My middle is 5’5 and under 6 stone but can’t fit her bones into a size 6 so wears an 8 or a 10.
