Help! I need a wedding dress

TheThermalStair · 19/04/2021 11:41

Wise MNers I'm in a pickle, I need to find something to wear at my (rather short notice) wedding in June. I don't want a white wedding dress, something colourful (a colour or several colours) but still long/ish and "special".

Due to the time it'll have to be "off the rack" and then maybe tailored a bit to fit me. (I've got a slightly plump hourglass type figure)

Any idea where to look? I'm a clueless person who needs all the help I can get. Thank you!

What is your budget? Have you looked on net a Porter? That's my go to for 'special' dresses.

No I haven't looked there - thanks for the tip. I get a bit overwhelmed sometimes with massive websites where I'm not clear what the quality is like. That dress is rather beautiful!

Budget - up to £2000 (that would have to be top whack for something amazing).

Haven't looked at Monsoon - will check that out now.

Ivy and Oak do some beautiful dresses. I'm also very hourglassy and they fit beautifully!

thanks @JorisBonson - love a good recommendation, I'll have a look and them now (also your user name made me laugh/feel scared at the idea of an hourglass Boris)

I second Monsoon and also love Coast and Ted Baker for colourful and elegant

Russell19 · 19/04/2021 12:21

Have you got any wed2be shops near you?

ShirleyPhallus · 19/04/2021 12:22

OOOOOH what a gorgeous brief! Huge congrats OP.

What kind of stuff do you wear normally? Have you got any colours you like / dislike? Any features you want to highlight?

Klaxon please can I put out a plea / beg that just because OP has described herself as “hourglass / slightly plump” no one suggests Lindy Bop dresses, and even worse, accompanied by retro hair curls and a pop of red lipstick. Let’s not turn her wedding in to fancy dress eh.

TheThermalStair · 19/04/2021 12:26

Thanks for the recommendations so far. I'd forgotten about Coast (ahhh, shopping, how I've missed you) and nice to hear some new brands too.

Bombshell do hourglass figures. This gold one is gorgeous

Thanks @ShirleyPhallus (my fave username!)

Ahaha thanks for the klaxon Grin, I actually don't mind that look at the right moment but I agree DP would be mildly surprised/freaked out to find a completely different person at the altar.

Good helpful questions too (clueless, as I said) - usually I wear dresses that have a defined waist and then go out - is it A line? Or wraparound type things with a tie belt. Thanks to the massive bazoongas I look like an armchair in high necked things, but equally a very low neck looks pornographic... so somewhere in between (a scoop neck, cowl neck or v neck) is my comfort zone. Colours - bright jewel colours or kind of goldy type things suit me. Blue, green, purple, black (!) etc. White and pastels make me look sick - and not in a good way.

I'd go needle and thread.

TheThermalStair · 19/04/2021 12:32

Meant to say - that's my normal clothing I'm talking about, keeping an open mind on this because something a bit more pricey and well made will likely do more for me than the equivalent sickly pink from New Look.

Net a Porter and the outnet.

But - where do you live? If London, personal shopper at selfridges?

that is pretty! thanks for the link

I'm in London but looking on the Selfridges website didn't dredge up much, would it be worthwhile going in?

Second vote for Merle in and Thread

Zazazaz · 19/04/2021 12:40
  • Needle
TheThermalStair · 19/04/2021 12:46

Needle and Thread seems like a good brand but there are A LOT OF RUFFLES.

I'd never heard of this but there seems to be one in central london I could get to.

Oh my God. Are you ME?

Another recommendation for The Outnet, although you need to keep an eye on it daily for new arrivals. My sister got married in the most fabulous deep blue Vivienne Westwood evening dress that was an Outnet purchase.

A brand that is stalking me with social media ads is Tallulah and Hope. I have no idea what the quality is like but their dresses look very pretty and they have lots of wrap styles with defined high waists:

Somewhere else to explore would be Wolf and Badger, although there is a lot on there so it’s one to browse of an evening with a glass of wine.
