Do you ever actually like your hair after you have been to the hairdresser?

I can only think of one time I liked it about thirty years ago! I went from really long to a mid-length layered style and everybody liked it including me.

I had my hair cut and coloured yesterday. I was so looking forward to it after six months and it’s ok but a bit yellow and stripy. I wanted to love it but never do.

Btw I have tried different styles and colours and different salons over the years and I still feel the same.

Why are you getting highlights if you don't like them, even straightaway? Do you like them better as time goes on?

Sooobored · 16/04/2021 07:48

I haven’t had highlights for ages but I had lockdown hair that was mousey brown with a bit of grey and had to do something!

I don't get mine coloured but I don't really feel like me till I've rewashed it. Somehow the way they dry it is never right.

Isadora2007 · 16/04/2021 07:56

Get a new hairdresser? I love my new cut and it’s so well done that even i can style it easily and it looks good.
A good hairdresser should be able to know what will look good on you and advise you appropriately while still doing something that you like.

Thorinfling · 16/04/2021 08:01

No I never do! Always takes a few weeks for me to realise I like it. Maybe the colour settles down or something. I hate it when they blow dry, makes my hair totally flat! Now I just get them to rough dry.
Went to one place where if you didn't want them to dry it you could go upstairs to a part full of mirrors/products/dryers and do it yourself, that was great!

The90swereadecadeago · 16/04/2021 08:02

No OP. I’ve tried several now, cut is always ‘fine’ but I never love it and the colour is always off.

I wanted a nice auburn colour before lockdown and the and the hairdresser tried several times to get the colour and couldn’t do it. I went and used a box dye and got it straight away! I went in for my cut and I proudly told them I used box dye to get the colour 😄

EventuallyDistracted · 16/04/2021 08:10

Neither the rough dry or blow dry work for me, rough dry ends up looking frizzy (I have wavy hair), blow dry looks a bit too "done". I do like the experience of having it blowdried, it feels lovely while they are doing it but it's not worth the extra money really so I usually just have a wet cut.

sansucre · 16/04/2021 09:25

No! I have never liked my hair immediately after a trip to the hairdressers, or even for the following few weeks either.

Pre-Covid, I had my hair cut & coloured 3-4 times a year. It always takes a good 3-4 weeks for my hair to settle as the initial cut is always a bit too short but once a few weeks have passed, the length is better. As for the colour, it's always little too dark at first, but after a few washes, the colour has faded a little and my hair's own highlight start to show through and work properly with the baby lights I've had done.

I'm having my hair cut later for the first time in a year. I know I'll hate the result until sometime mid-May which makes me want to be a little more experimental than usual!

VeronicaVanHoopen · 16/04/2021 09:28

I ONLY like my hair when I have been to the hairdressers Grin I get it blowdried whenever I go out and spend far too much money on it but I just can't get my hair to look even halfway decent on my own!

elsaesmeralda · 16/04/2021 09:30

I usually like the cut and colour, but I have to go home and mess around with it until I like the style ! I always walk out with silky smooth flat hair and look about 12

Sooobored · 16/04/2021 09:34

Yes I don’t get it straightened any more as it’s so flat to my head it looks greasy the next day.

I dont colour my hair so only get it cut. I never like it when it's first been cut but usually like it after about a fortnight. It seems to the a couple of weeks to 'settle down' into the new style and then it's nice.

Icequeen01 · 16/04/2021 09:46

I've never liked my hair after I've had a cut but to be honest that's because I have such rubbish hair. I have fine, awkward hair and no one can blow dry it properly. I always envy people who say they have just had a fabulous cut as I know there is no fabulous cut in this world that will make any difference to my hair.

I do like having my hair coloured though as it does help to make it feel and look a little bit thicker.

I've got a hair appointment tomorrow and I am both looking forward to it and dreading it in equal measures. My hair has turned into witches hair over lockdown and I know my fantasy of what it will look like after my cut and colour is just that - pure fantasy 😢

Babdoc · 16/04/2021 09:49

I only go to to my hairdresser once every two months. I often tease him that he will need sheep shears for me!
But I’m always pleased with the great improvement he achieves in thinning out and tidying my woolly locks.
Why are so many PPs shelling out £20 for something they don’t like? Change hairdresser!

fizbosshoes · 16/04/2021 09:49

Yes! I have quite thick hair that is neither properly curly or straight. It looks bushey/frizzy a lot of the time. It occasionally dries nicely in waves and if I put morrocon oil on it , it sometimes looks nice, but I've never managed by myself to get it as sleek and silky as they do at the hairdresser.

dotdashdashdash · 16/04/2021 10:17

I'm the same - never like my cut or colour straight away! I tired loads of different salons thinking that was the issue, but I think it's just my hair and me!

Anewuser · 16/04/2021 10:21

@Sooobored, I could have written this myself. Had my hair cut and coloured this week and was so looking forward to it. The last 10 years I seem to have spent a fortune and never been pleased. Tried different colours and hairdressers but nothing works. Wouldn’t mind but I’m £150 down as well.

momobots · 16/04/2021 10:21

Short answer- no. But I need a cut as I have horrendous split ends

KatharinaRosalie · 16/04/2021 10:22

Yes, I do. But took me 30 years to find a hair stylist who actually listens to me and then, does what I've asked. I'm happy each and every time. Before that, I was also wondering why I'm wasting money to look worse than before.

MrsMaizel · 16/04/2021 10:51

@Sooobored you need to discuss with your hairdresser what you don't like and in the next appointment move more towards that . I had a terrible experience last Summer when it was technically wrong as opposed to me just not liking it. It was redone by another colourist at my choice a week later . I agree though that it is daunting waiting to see what it looks like !

EventuallyDistracted · 16/04/2021 10:58

I don't mind because what I'm paying for is the cut, if I am happy once I've rewashed and dried it myself that's fine and that is normally the case.

PomegranateQueen · 16/04/2021 11:03

That sounds amazing @Thorinfling

I only decide if I like a haircut when I have washed and straightened it myself, I never look like me when I come out of the salon.

MiniTheMinx · 16/04/2021 11:17

I only go once every 6 months or so and I don't like it when anyone else blow dries it. I have thick coarse wavy hair and they seem determined to straighten it and try and tame it. The hair looks fab, but I suit my wild wilful and difficult hair. I let them blow dry it though because it seems to please them Grin and then go home and immediately wash it.

YerAWizardHarry · 16/04/2021 11:20

@Babdoc once every two months is a totally normal length of time to go between haircuts

I also definitely pay way more than £20 for a cut Envy

Sooobored · 16/04/2021 11:38

I agree that I prefer my hair after it’s settled for a few weeks.
