Do you ever actually like your hair after you have been to the hairdresser?

I can only think of one time I liked it about thirty years ago! I went from really long to a mid-length layered style and everybody liked it including me.

I had my hair cut and coloured yesterday. I was so looking forward to it after six months and it’s ok but a bit yellow and stripy. I wanted to love it but never do.

Btw I have tried different styles and colours and different salons over the years and I still feel the same.

Cut always like it now I know what I want and how to ask for it.

Colour is a real minefield, so difficult to get what you want.

ExConstance · 23/04/2021 11:22

Oh yes! I come out feeling really swishy and happy. I also like it when I do it though, I go for a more fluffed out less "done" look.

magicstar1 · 23/04/2021 11:42

I always love mine....since I found a great hairdresser. She's in a really cheap shop, but has such a talent for her job. There's always a line of people waiting for her.

She won't let me do some of my more mad ideas lol, but always knows exactly what will work.

ShurImGrand123 · 23/04/2021 11:56

I cut and colour my own hair but that's because I was a trained hairdresser and know exactly what I'm doing but even do, the back is tricky for me to cut. I keep it short in a pixie style most of the time.

I think some people who are disappointed with their hair after a visit to the salon, have unrealistic expectations. They expect even the most junior hairdresser to be competent enough to do a great job and aren't willing to pay a more experienced person.

In most salons there's a hierarchy of stylists and the more expensive ones are usually the more experienced hairdressers. I always advise my family and friends to ask for recommendations before booking in, and never to book the most junior person as they will have very little practical experience following completion of their basic training.

These days many hairdressers only complete their basic level 2 and then learn on the job. Although some never take any further courses to keep themselves up to date. A decent colourist has ideally completed level 4 colouring.

Stripey highlights is an indicator of inexperience. Or a hairdresser who's been doing the same thing for years and is pretty incompetent.

Hairdressers that automatically reach straight for the bleach to remove old colour and insist on clients having highlights for 3 or 4 appointments to get them back to blonde, need to be ditched.
With new improved colour removers available you can go from dark to blonde in one session without damage.

@ShurImGrand123 what do you think of Aveda's version of bleach; that's why I go to Aveda, supposed to be better for hate. My mum's hairdresser does her highlights really well and doesn't use Aveda. If there wasn't a product difference I should probably use her.

ShurImGrand123 · 23/04/2021 18:51

Aveda products are great but there are other good bleaches out there too. Basically, most well known colour houses have developed decent lightening products (assuming they're used properly, with a low strength developer).

Product knowledge is important but good technique is equally important. I much prefer doing balayage to standard foil highlights as I think the result is far more natural and easier for the client to maintain.

I have regular cuts and babylights 2-3 times per year and am always delighted. I had my old hairdresser for about 7 years (4 different people working there who would do the colour and 1 of them who would do the cut) and was always really happy, switched to a new one this year as moved to another country and he is excellent too.

JeanneFrench · 23/04/2021 19:36

Find people with good hair, ask where they go, and go for a consultation to see whether their stylist/colorist sounds like they can make you happy.

ElMacchiato · 23/04/2021 19:52

I hate the blow drying and the mysterious 'product ' they put on the hair, so I go home and rinse it out. I've given up trying to explain that I don't want these things, they say ' oh... well I'll just put on a bit of x instead' and it's just as bad.

But the haircut itself is usually fine.

XingMing · 23/04/2021 20:45

My hairdresser cuts brilliantly, even on curly hair, used to work as an editorial stylist, did a degree in portraiture, and understands that I don't want to look like I have been to the hairdresser. Just, I woke up this way. If you have one, lucky you. In 60 years, I've found three. One is 3000 miles away; one became so successful I can no longer afford the time or money, and the third I am not sharing.

garlictwist · 23/04/2021 20:53

God I love my hair after the hair dresser. She dries it in such a lovely way that I can never do myself. I always try not to wash it for a few days after just to try and keep it for a little while longer.

I had mine cut yesterday and I feel so swooshy and glam.

dementedpixie · 23/04/2021 20:59

I like my hair after the hairdresser. I git highlights on Wednesday for the first time since December and feel so much better now. Only had some argan oil put in before drying. And she put some waves in with tongs afterwards

Lipsandlashes · 23/04/2021 21:07

I love how my colour looks after going to the hairdresser but absolutely hate the blow dry. Always really flat but weirdly lifted at the roots. I can’t wait to wash it the next morning.

Hopeislost · 23/04/2021 21:10

I love my hair after a haircut. My hairdresser does exactly what I ask for, and gives me a bouncy blow dry. I ask for no products and use dry shampoo after a few days to make it last as long as possible!

Colour I never liked. So I just do my own now!

sarahc336 · 23/04/2021 21:16

So glad I've seen this thread I thought I was the only one that would come out of the hairdressers after she's spent ages blow drying it after my cut and tie it up 😂 she always dries my long Bob hair really round and I hate it so just tie it up until I can the wash it. I thought I was bad but clearly not 😄😄 x

CMOTDibbler · 23/04/2021 21:38

Very, very rarely. TBH, for the last few years I've only had it cut every 6 months or so, gave up colouring it 10 years ago, and now I don't let them use straighteners as it makes my hair look limp.
I'm having it cut on Sunday and don't expect to be wowed but at least this hairdresser doesn't charge a fortune and does what I ask

inmyslippers · 23/04/2021 21:41

No I've got curly and there are no hairdressers that can properly cut it. The few that have tried basically wet it, comb it and trim it like they would straight hair. I just go to them for colouring now.

ladygindiva · 23/04/2021 21:44

I never used to but I do with my current hairdresser of about 2 years. This is a first Put it this way, if she moves abroad I'm uprooting my family and following her 🤣

FindingMeno · 23/04/2021 21:44

I loathe going to the hairdressers.
It seems that in the past the styles I ask for are inappropriate for my age so I'm given something they think is more suitable.

ElaborateSalad · 23/04/2021 21:45

God yes. I miss being able to afford a decent cut and colour. Used to float out all smiley.

Phoebesgift · 23/04/2021 22:04

Yes. I have a really good hairdresser. She's turned me into a golden blonde and I'm delighted. I have dark hair naturally and other hairdressers turned it gingery.

Great cut and full head highlights £90 London zone 3.

didireallysaythat · 24/04/2021 17:48

Following on from this thread I looked for a hairdresser and I found a really great one, offers consultations first etc etc great reviews. Alas they aren't taking on new clients and I don't think there's much point in joining the waiting list so I'm back to square one ....
