Do you ever actually like your hair after you have been to the hairdresser?

I can only think of one time I liked it about thirty years ago! I went from really long to a mid-length layered style and everybody liked it including me.

I had my hair cut and coloured yesterday. I was so looking forward to it after six months and it’s ok but a bit yellow and stripy. I wanted to love it but never do.

Btw I have tried different styles and colours and different salons over the years and I still feel the same.

I normally like the cut and colour but not the blow dry. Always too flat and straight. I always come out and ruffle it up in the car

StartingGrid · 16/04/2021 22:04

After my last haircut DP asked me if my hairdresser was actually qualified Grin to be honest I've never loved my hair at any point, but I really should find a better hairdresser!

didireallysaythat · 16/04/2021 22:16

I wish I could find a hairdresser who had some suggestions. I don't see the point in turning up with a magazine full of photos of skinny 20 somethings with lovely thick hair when I'm a dumpy 50 year old with a witches dip, a cow lick and fine flyaway hair. I can't even figure what face shape I am. Isn't this what hairdressers should be good at? Guiding their clients as to what might suit, what colour might flatter etc? Sure if you know what you want, that's fine. But I haven't a clue.

I also take a hair tie and immediately put it back up into a messy bun once cut.

Horridcreature · 16/04/2021 22:17

Very rarely. I have a disability. My hair be allowed to dry naturally and brushed. Ive tried various sprays/gels and it doesn’t work.

Hairdressers can’t seem to grasp that. When I ask them just to dry enough for me go home, they spend ages drying and styling. However great it looks I’m sad because I know I can’t recreate it. I can’t see without my glasses so I can’t see them sneaking up with the spray. I don’t bother stopping them now.

I go home shower and see what I’m going to actually look like. TBF is likely do it anyway, I hate even a few hairs left on my neck/in clothes

I usually love my hair after a trip to the hairdresser. I had my hair cut on Thursday. It's a bit shorter than I wanted it but better than my scruffy lockdown hair.

Gwenhwyfar · 17/04/2021 16:56

I think between-lockdown visits are bound to be a disappointment because they'll be an anti-climax. You will have been waiting for so long to go.

UCOinanOCG · 17/04/2021 17:02

I've just come back from the hairdresser after a four month lockdown gap. I think it looks and feels bloody amazing! I walked outside and there was gust of wind and I had no hair in my eyes. It was wonderful.

desperatehousewife21 · 17/04/2021 17:10

Yes but only recently. I like going to hairdressers who work for themselves not a salon. I found a local one who has a salon in her back garden so her rates are really reasonable.

Since July last year I’ve braved an undercut, and yesterday I had a post lockdown cut and went shorter/ more shaved areas and I LOVE it! Since realising my style (hair/ clothes/ music) I’ve really had fun with it and am so happy not to be coming out the hairdresser with ‘just a trim’

KillingMeDeftly · 17/04/2021 17:17

No mainly because they usually put too much product in it. The first time I wash it after a haircut it looks amazing but then after that it’s luck of the draw, as I have curly hair!

StarCourt · 17/04/2021 17:20

I always come out of the hairdressers feeling 5 yrs younger

WindyPudding · 17/04/2021 19:43

It has been known, but usually no. I've had a couple of brilliant hairdressers but one retired and one moved away :(

I have short hair, I always take pictures for them and explain, but not many hairdressers really get short hair. They typically do one of going too short all over, making it alarmingly short or weirdly long at the back, or just not really having a clue and snipping away asking me how long I want each bit, which IMO is what they should know. Then they cover it in product and make it all crispy. I run home, wash it and often do a bit more cutting to make it right.

I had an appt booked at a new place this week when they reopened, was looking forward to it but no. However at least it was too long, so now I've cut it a bit more and quite like it.

WindyPudding · 17/04/2021 19:46

Yes - I love it when they have ideas and suggestions, and know what will suit you - and you know they're good so you trust them.

Fkrkrodps · 17/04/2021 19:50

Never. I now cut my own hair. I have no cutting skills, but I know my own hair and I was quite pleased with my last attempt.

SylHellais · 17/04/2021 19:52

I never understand people who need to wash their hair as soon as they’ve got home from the hairdresser. I always love mine after I’ve been and try to preserve it as long as possible!

My hairdresser is amazing though, I’ve been going there about five years and no matter which stylist I have, they always do a great job.

PollyThePony · 17/04/2021 19:53

DH cut my hair today! I love it because it saved me £60 Blush.

This! I have no idea what would suit me so would like a hairdresser who would look at my hair, face shape and texture and give me the perfect cut.

Yes, I always leave it as long as I can after a blow dry.
tobee · 18/04/2021 04:02

I always love my hair after my current hairdresser has done it. My hair is very thin but he always knows how to make it look it's best. Haven't been in over a year and miss him. Sad

spottygymbag · 18/04/2021 04:10

Yes mostly. If I have a cut where it's not sitting quite right then I pop back in and they are great at fixing it, usually at no cost but I'm not asking for a full do-over with wash and blow dry etc, just an adjustment.
My hairdresser would much rather have open communication and keep a loyal customer than lose a customer and open themselves up for bad reviews. I used to feel guilty about it put he has really put me at ease. It's only happened twice in several years though.

Elsabet · 18/04/2021 06:54

Yes. I always hated the hairdresser and would rather go to the dentist but for the last 6 years I have found a hairdresser that cuts just how I like it.
I used to take a lot of magazine photos of what I liked and didn’t like. Now I take my iPad with photos and I have a Stacey Dooley style cut for my thick mop of hair!

Elsabet · 18/04/2021 07:05

@didireallysaythat I look on the internet at photos of similar aged famous people or famous people that I like the hairstyle of. Or I google mid length long layers and see what I find. Save the photos to my phone in my hair album and off I go to the hairdresser! I find it difficult to explain what I like so the photos make it so much easier. I also have a couple of what I don’t like so she knows exactly where I am coming from.

UnsolicitedDickPic · 18/04/2021 08:08

Funnily enough I was thinking this the other day. I was so looking forward to my most recent cut but I'm completely underwhelmed by it. I know that part of the reason is that my hair is considerably thinner since having DD and so I can't have the same styles as I used to (in particular I miss my fringe!). But the other reason is that (like most people I know) I've put on weight during lockdown, and when I have a haircut I immediately expect to look thinner. Grin

TheBullfinch · 18/04/2021 10:42

No, I always hate it.

I have naturally dark blonde, poker straight long hair but masses of it.

They always highlite it using ginger, despite me saying i want it neutral and showing pictures. They seem obsessed with 'warming you up' wherever Ive gone. I dont want warming up I just want a few dubtle highlites.

They always do a blunt cut too and I alwsys ask them to chop into it afterwards. 10 years and they still dont know but the stylist turnaround is massive as they all keep going on maternity leave.

I love the blow dry though. Best bit about it.

didireallysaythat · 19/04/2021 21:34

@Elsabet I need to find 50 something's who don't colour or blow dry their hair. If there's a source of those photos I can't find them. I've looked at photos of witches peak and cowlick hair styles and they look like they involve more than 10 minutes towel drying Smile

If I got my hair cut more frequently maybe I could get some colour put in.

uptooearly2 · 23/04/2021 06:47

I had about 3 inches cut off my hair. It took me a while to get used to the new length but I do like it now.
