Is it frumpy to wear leggings under a dress..?

MHA65 · 15/04/2021 19:11

I have a couple of nice summer shift dresses that I bought last year and then didnt really wear...they are slightly too short (Im in my early 50s and dont want to show too much lily white leg!) Can I wear them with leggings? This would get me around the blue white legs and being too short issues in one go! But no idea if this is considered acceptable! Grin If not, what do older/larger women wear in the summer??

@RockingMyFiftiesNot

Is it frumpy ? Yes I think it is more of a post menopausal woman who shops at White Stuff type look .

Vile comment. Reported.

Don't be silly ! I am post menopausal and in my opinion there is a customer base for White Stuff which is exactly this type of customer . You can see it in the shop and you can see it out there in the street . If you knew anything about FB advertising you would know that there are exact factors like use which as a business you target to reach your market segment . It's the same as saying Phase Eight is for the over 50s conventional dressers or White Company is for the 40s yummy mummy well to do brigade . You have taken "post menopausal " to mean a bad thing whereas it is actually NOT - it is a great thing ! I love my post menopausal life but I still wouldn't wear White Stuff dresses and leggings or Phase Eight .....

The poster was calling post menopausal women frumpy. It was ageist. MN agreed and deleted it.

If you want to stand by and tolerate the increasing number of ageist posts then that is your choice. I won't, any more than I will tolerate any other unpleasant or discriminatory posts.

To call someone 'silly' for taking a stand says more about you than it does about me.

SionnachRua · 24/04/2021 11:52

I think it looks very frumpy and dowdy, yeah. I also think that if you're short (like me) it does you no favours at all to visually chop your leg like that. Makes us look even stumpier.

No the post did NOT say that all menopausal women are frumpy . It said " who shop at ...." and was relating to the type of clothing being talked about .That is entirely different but why read a comment properly 🙄
RockingMyFiftiesNot · 24/04/2021 11:54

@MrsMaizel I did read the comment properly. So did MNHQ who seemingly agreed with me (along with other posters it would appear).

What's wrong with being post- menopausal?? How does one avoid becoming such?
No one said it was wrong.
Hopefully I will be at that stage soon although I already shop at White Stuff.

Leggings under a dress... I haven't worn this combo since I was pregnant in the UK 10+ years ago. So dated. Let's face it: it looks shite and is a comfort/convenience only. Embrace the midi dress!

UniBallEye · 24/04/2021 14:26

I think it is a really dated look to be honest. It's really very very rare to see a women dressed in this combination looking stylish.
I see it a lot where i live and it's generally an unflattering look.

I am in my 50's, pale skinned and have a vein on the back of my calf that makes me self conscious about my legs but I had not worn legging in any form in about 10 years.

Depending on the type of tunic style dress, fabric etc I have worn cropped cigarette trousers under and it has looked good. Again I haven't worn that in a long time.

I now wear fitted at the waist / hips and loose legged linen trousers from Whistles / Jigsaw in summer
Or jumpsuits, I have 3 at the moment and am contemplating another. I have a gorgeous dressy one and a very nice black linen one both from whistles and a casual denim one from GAP. I am contemplating another from Whistles and the Manhattan from Sezane
I also wear midi dresses which cover the part of my leg I don't want on show and I wear them with bare legs, really only ankles showing, I have some very nice ones from COS and whistles (am hankering after the beautiful green cape midi dress from there at the moment)
And finally I wear wide legged cropped coulottes I guess you'd call them.
So I have managed to find work-arounds that feel good rather than shoving leggings under dresses - which is too hot anyway

Well Channel don't think so! It looks like it's back in fashion!

Well Channel don't think so! It looks like it's back in fashion!
I'm guessing that the average MNer ( definitely including me ) doesn't look like a Channel model! Those models can rock any look without looking frumpy.
Whatever they wear is not going to be so appealing on some 6 inches shorter and several stone heavier!

SwimBaby · 24/04/2021 16:42

Speak for yourself, I’m about a foot shorter and six stone heavier!!!!!

notacooldad · 24/04/2021 17:08

Speak for yourself, I’m about a foot shorter and six stone heavier!!!!!
In that case there is no way you are going to look as good in a dress and leggings as the Channel models! I am the same and would be delusional if I thought otherwise.

PresentingPercy · 24/04/2021 17:15

It’s frumpy. Buy a midi dress and trainers. The tennis shoe type ones. Far less leg showing and fashionable. It’s easy.

Lots of shops have their target markets. Some clothes suit a certain age and others do not. But wear what you like - just do not ask if it’s fashionable when you probably know it isn’t.

MiddlesexGirl · 24/04/2021 17:25

I just don't have the legs to wear a midi dress. The shape is fantastic (though I say it myself!) but I'm covered in spider veins. So my legs have to be either very tanned or covered up. The leggings under a mini dress look though I can do .... and not look frumpy. I think the trick is getting the dress short enough.

MowldyStupidAndAssive · 24/04/2021 17:38

Bloody hell, you lot Confused

I live in leggings with dresses for most of the year. You might not like my style but I can say with confidence I'm not frumpy Grin

Today I'm wearing a Boden ruched sides vest dress (possibly the most flattering item of clothing ever) with 3/4 length purple zebra print leggings (which I made myself) and some chunky black/silver CAT trainers. When I went out earlier I also wore a baseball cap, because it's sunny.

And shock horror I am 39 this year Shock

Chatanooga1 · 24/04/2021 17:50

I am no spring chicken and in very hot weather especially in foreign climes I like to wear white leggings under floaty above the knee dresses or floaty kimono/kaftan dresses.

I have worn them in this country under a floaty dress for a windy walk on piers or promenades.

Carycy · 24/04/2021 19:11

Started wearing cycle shorts under dresses. Stops me accidentally flashing my knickers and gives me a bit of extra warmth/ comfort!

PresentingPercy · 24/04/2021 20:19

Vest dress and zebra leggings? Words fail me. Not frumpy but ???

Mugginyouleftrightandcentre · 24/04/2021 20:34

Why do words fail you, what's the problem?
PresentingPercy · 24/04/2021 20:44

I clearly live in a different world!

TruelyWonder · 24/04/2021 20:45

Someone else that likes zebra leggings. I think she looks fantastic and definitely not frumpy Grin

Is it frumpy to wear leggings under a dress..?
sweetclems · 24/04/2021 21:11

I always wear dresses and leggings, I'm 35 (I think) I'm not frumpy I don't think and if I was I couldn't give a fuck as long as I'm comfy

Irishterrier · 24/04/2021 21:49

I agree with you @PresentingPercy !

And I don't recognise that person in the black and zebra get up but think she looks an absolute fright!

Curlypop · 24/04/2021 21:59

@Rainbowsandstorms snap. Didn't even think it was old or frumpy before reading here.
Screw it im still doing it.

CatalinaCasesolver · 24/04/2021 22:02

It's not a look I personally like but you should wear what you feel good in and sod what anyone else thinks!
