Is it frumpy to wear leggings under a dress..?

I have a couple of nice summer shift dresses that I bought last year and then didnt really wear...they are slightly too short (Im in my early 50s and dont want to show too much lily white leg!) Can I wear them with leggings? This would get me around the blue white legs and being too short issues in one go! But no idea if this is considered acceptable! Grin If not, what do older/larger women wear in the summer??

The question was asked on the style & beauty board ..... posters are not going up to random women in the street and proffering their opinion on their choices. Do I think it’s stylish? Quite often not when the proportions are wrong or a light pastel dress is paired with black leggings. Do I think it’s acceptable ? Obviously, depending on your definition of acceptable. Lots of variations will look good.... a tight mini and docs or trainers sounds good, a long midi also sounds good.... it comes down to the cut of the dress. It needs to be a straighter cut not fit and flare. What do older / larger women wear? All sorts.... I sometimes wear dresses over jeans or slim trousers if not tights. Occasionally over leggings but only ever ankle length leggings. In summer I like oversized dresses with chub rub shorts from snag underneath. As long as everyone feels comfortable and happy with their choices it’s fine... no-one is going to point and stare.

This was practically my exact look this weekend but with black leggings instead of bare legs or tights. From far away, who can even tell they aren’t tights. I think some people are getting very worked up over what could essentially be a pair of thick tights Grin

Maybe I’m not stylish. But I am warm.

I also think that thick/opaque black tights with a summer dress is as much of a fashion misstep as leggings. Just wear something seasonally/weather appropriate rather than trying to make a summer dress work when it's clearly not the weather for it. For me, wearing items of clothing clearly in the wrong season is akin to something which is ill-fitting, it just looks wrong.

I wear leggings and dresses all the time, I know its a fashion faux pas 🙃 but I hate my legs so much, they are fat, wobbly, see thru white, blue with red dots where the hairs are. It would be the absolute dream to go without but I don't dare to bare them !!! Jeans and any kind of trousers look awful on me too. Leggings and opaque tights are my faithful friends so I can wear dresses everyday

Who fucking cares? Wear what you like. Frumpy is such a sexist, derogatory term, like 'greedy' for food.

👏👏👏

I don’t think that is a summer dress, it’s a spring/autumn dress. A summer dress to me has straps not sleeves, even short ones. It’s black also which isn’t particularly summery. It’s also in the H&M spring collection which suggests to me it’s not a seasonal misstep. Any dress you can wear with tights can also be worn with leggings imo.

SisterAgatha · 26/04/2021 16:38

But mostly, this!

TheVampiresWife · 26/04/2021 16:55

@SisterAgatha I love that dress, and those boots, and I can imagine it'd look fantastic with leggings (which yes, are no different from thick tights, when worn with boots particularly).

I also love your username! 🦇

Deathraystare · 27/04/2021 11:47

Ha ha It must be frumpy cos I do this all the time. Until they stop making dresses that just cover your bum I will wear leggings with them!

Elllllle · 27/04/2021 12:06

@BlairWaldorfLovesShopping 100%

Honestly, if you don't care what you look like, why the f*ck are you here giving your opinion to people who do actually care?

I for one have never said that I don't care what I look like. I just believe that women should be able to wear what makes them happy/feel their best without being given sexist labels such as 'frumpy'.

Not sure there's any need to get quite so sweary and angry over leggings either, tbh Grin

Elllllle · 27/04/2021 12:57

I swear all the time, doesn't mean I'm angry; in this case it just means I think you're being over defensive and perhaps not in the right topic for you. Anyway, crack on with your leggings! Grin

So because my definition of style isn't the same as yours, or because I sometimes wear leggings with boots in winter, or because I believe frumpy is a sexist notion, the style topic isn't the 'right topic' for me? Is there an entrance exam you're supposed to pass before you can post here Grin

Been posting here for years and it's news to me!

What's the male equivalent of frumpy?

notacooldad · 27/04/2021 15:06

When male staff dress frumpy at work they normally get called an old git, compo or grandad from the kids I work with!😂😂

can't think of the word but 'brit dad on holiday' comes to mind. Those god awful velcro strap sandals, polo shirt tucked into cargo shorts, the belt absolutely must not match the shoes/other leather items. Bonus points for all pastels, and a jumper over the shoulders with the sleeves tied loosely at the chest.
Pottedpalm · 27/04/2021 15:45

Now, you see, my DH has a summer uniform of bright/pastel polo shirts and light khaki/tan cargoes from Crew. He wears these with deck shoes though . He tans easily and looks very fit indeed, Just sayin’ 😄

Pottedpalm · 27/04/2021 15:46

Oh,I forgot the navy sweater, over the shoulders . Especially good with a pink polo 🙂

DroopyDaff · 27/04/2021 16:03

I wouldn’t wear full length leggings under a summer dress. I think that looks a bit odd.

I wear cropped leggings with a mini or above knee type dress. Doesn’t really make you feel hot and you only need to shave up to your knees Wink. Can’t stand wearing tights.

M&S harbour polo shirts striped for bonus points with Chino shorts and sandals with bad tan lines around the ankles.

Male frump... hmmm "A Nigel" maybe? But we use certain words mainly for women I think. A lot of that is down to misogynistic tropes.
