Recommend me a non drying Foundation!

Please help me!

Since hitting my mid 30s I have been suffering from rosacea. Luckily now under control and I'm just left with quite dry skin and some redness in the mornings.

I now have a great wash and moisturize routine using skinceuticals but I still struggle with make up.

I confess I haven't spent much on the big brands as I just worry it will be wasted. Last week I tried the latest social trend for Il Makiage. The customer service has been great as my shade was initially wrong-but alas, the foundation itself is quite thick and ends up slightly pasted on and then big flakes appear after not much time.

So, wise mumsnetters - please recommend me your go to foundation for dry skin that has a lovely GLOW to it (I hate matte foundation). I confess I haven't tried much but Rimmel, L'oreal, Bare Minerals and now Il Makiage are all a big thumbs down

Thank you!

Have you tried using a primer under the foundation?

Teacaketotty · 14/04/2021 11:30

No7 Hydraluminous - it’s just so so good.

ThatOtherPoster · 14/04/2021 11:31

I just finished a bottle of Dream Radiant Liquid by Maybelline and that was proper glowy.

But the best foundation I ever used was Light Expert by ByTerry. I looked like a newborn! I’d use that all the time but it’s £50ish.

fistasledge · 14/04/2021 11:34

@ThatOtherPoster Yes, I always use primer and have tried a variety - currently use brightening one by bare minerals.

It does help the foundation glide on but I still end up with dry skin and flakes poking through.

fistasledge · 14/04/2021 11:36

@Teacaketotty I've just read some reviews of it. Looks good! Does it give that dewy look?

I realise I'm always going to have to patch up dry skin but I think some foundations have actually made my skin worse and set me back. I'm hoping if I find a good one then, along with my skincare routine, it should be able to steer clear of the flakey skin look!

OHhhhh, I've just looked up the on ByTerry. Do you just order it online and take a chance with the colour? Can't work out if it's available anywhere to look at the colours?

Revolution conceal and hydrate. This is it on me

@fistasledge it is nice and dewy, but doesn’t sit in my dry spots. Not overly shiny or oily either once applied so works great. It’s the only foundation I’ve got a near perfect colour match too - usually they are too orange or too ashy!

I’ve just finished a charlotte tilbury one and no7 is far superior. I use Bobbi brown vitamin face base as my primer.

Pinktruffle · 14/04/2021 12:22

@fistasledge Space NK sell Byterry if you want to check out the colours there, they also do a foundation match thi bff on the website where you put in colours from brands you use and they will give you a best match.
I have eczema on my face so very dry, I find Dior face and body foundayion is great, Boots should be able to give you a sample to try. I know it's hard to get to shops right now but the biggest tip I have for anyone with dry skin wanting to try a foundation is go in to store and ask for samples in your shade otherwise you will waste a lot of money on things that don't work.

Geamhradh · 14/04/2021 12:27

By Terry direct website often has great sales and offers.

My Holy grail of foundation is Hydraluminous as mentioned above. I've tried everything high end and nothing comes close to this.
I'd agree the Maybelline dream satin is good, but not quite as perfect a coverage.

cheerfulpanda · 14/04/2021 12:33

Expensive, but I really rate the Bobbi Brown intensive serum foundation for this.

If you can get to a counter they’ll give you sample pot that lasts 3-4 days so a good trial period. I always seem pick it up duty free but unsurprisingly haven’t been through many airports lately!

LemonSwan · 14/04/2021 12:36

This is probably not what you want to hear but I found not wearing foundation anywhere but around the eye and blended down is the answer.

Men never have an uneven complexion and call me a conspiracy theorist but I think its because they dont wear foundation to begin with.

6 weeks now when the sun is out will sort this problem once and for all.

fairburn · 14/04/2021 12:48

Chanel vitalumiere. NOTHING compares. Nothing.

mrfrostywasadick · 14/04/2021 13:01

Hourglass. The oil primer is amazing and then use their hyaluronic skin tint, which is buildable and has great coverage. Very dewy.

thethoughtfox · 14/04/2021 13:32

Nars Everyday Luminous: full coverage, dewy looking, lasts all day.

Wow! Your skin is beautiful and so glowy!

I think if I took a photo that close up of my eye, all you'd get is crows feet 😆

Wowser! Some fantastic tips! Thank you so much.

And I think you're right, I'll end up wasting so much money if I don't get samples. I need to go to Kingston Friday to take something back so perhaps I'll trawl the counters and ask for some samples then

I wish I had this confidence! But my rosacea leaves me with such red and scaley skin that I'm just too self conscious

I did go weeks during the pandemic with only wearing moisturiser but it really didn't make any difference-I still had red and dry skin 😞

Op if you have rosacea try IT Cosmetics cc cream. It really evens things out, has brilliant coverage but looks like skin, not foundation. It's lovely and dewy.

ThatOtherPoster · 14/04/2021 13:49

Is there still a SpaceNK in Kingston? If so you could try the ByTerry shades there.

OldKingCole · 14/04/2021 13:50

Hi OP - I have same problem with skin looking patchy and dry when I wear foundation- I have recently discovered in my case it’s due to dehydrated skin - and I have oily skin!
So in the last week I have stared with a facial oil (Emma Hardie) every night before my moisturiser - and it is already much improved!

I haven't tried this! Do you put it on before foundation or is it in place of it?

This is really interesting to hear. How did you work out that you had dehydrated skin that was oily? I've always assumed I had dry skin as it gets flakey?

I'm being brave and posting some photos but clearly trying not to be too outing! So all close ups (may need to some to see)

This is me with the Il Makiage rubbish on. You can see my red cheeks are still coming through and the foundation attaches to the dry flakes so it's sort of spotted around my cheeks and forehead. And then gathers around my nose
