Recommend me a non drying Foundation!

Please help me!

Since hitting my mid 30s I have been suffering from rosacea. Luckily now under control and I'm just left with quite dry skin and some redness in the mornings.

I now have a great wash and moisturize routine using skinceuticals but I still struggle with make up.

I confess I haven't spent much on the big brands as I just worry it will be wasted. Last week I tried the latest social trend for Il Makiage. The customer service has been great as my shade was initially wrong-but alas, the foundation itself is quite thick and ends up slightly pasted on and then big flakes appear after not much time.

So, wise mumsnetters - please recommend me your go to foundation for dry skin that has a lovely GLOW to it (I hate matte foundation). I confess I haven't tried much but Rimmel, L'oreal, Bare Minerals and now Il Makiage are all a big thumbs down

Thank you!

@Teacaketotty - which colour of Hydraluminous do you use? I use No7 essentially natural in cool ivory which is my match but I do like a bit of colour.

mrfrostywasadick · 14/04/2021 23:09

@fistasledge in place of. It's fantastic. They refer to it as an anti ageing serum, moisturiser, concealer, spf and foundation in one.

ThatOtherPoster · 14/04/2021 23:30

Your skin looks lovely in those photos, OP! I honestly can’t see anything wrong.

Have you recently made the mistake of buying a magnifying mirror? Or just of cleaning your usual make-up mirror..? I’ve stopped doing those as I instantly look hideous! Ignorance is bliss...

RosieCockle · 15/04/2021 06:52

Estée Lauder Futurist Hydra Rescue is pretty pigmented. Plus it has an SPF of 45. I don't have dry skin but I can imagine this doesn't sit in cracks. You might be able to get a sample, given it's EL.

Fingerbobs · 15/04/2021 08:42

I have just found Typology’s tinted serum and it is amazing. You can get a sample of you got one of their facial oils? I also find YourGoodSkin instant dryness rescue brilliant during the day for glueing the flaky bits back together - you can use it under and on top of makeup. And I use NYX studio perfect photo loving primer in green on particularly bright red days.
I am also sorry to report that I’ve been off sugar and booze recently in a low-carb attempt to drop some lockdown lumpage and my skin is definitely less red although not much less dry, despite industrial quantities of oil and avocado.

Hydraluminous is so good. Switched from mac/EL DW to this.

Coverage is great and it's just well perfect and just dewy enough not to be shiny. I apply with a beauty blender (flat side) and lightly buff it with a clean powder brush (with no powder).

I have super dry skin with a red t zone abs thread veins in my nose but not many wrinkles and occasional eczema on my eyelid (I'm 41).

I wear either warm ivory or warm beige. Only annoyance is it's not in a pump so I can't ration it to two pumps Grin having said that it so affordable with offers abs so on I don't really mind. I think I paid £12.50 for a foundation, nail varnish and a pallete last year with stacked offers.

Chanel vitalumiere. NOTHING compares. Nothing
Was coming on to say exactly this. Ive wasted so much money on foundations that friends or beauty editors say are the best foundation ever and none of them have ever come close to Chanel. I use the Aqua lumiere in the summer for a lovely light glow with surprisingly good coverage.

No7 Hydraluminous - it’s just so so good.
I agree - it's brilliant. A little goes a long way too.

Armani Luminous Silk! www.feelunique.com/p/Giorgio-Armani-Luminous-Silk-Foundation-30ml In fact, anything Armani. I used to love their Face Fabric, too.

And my go-to BB cream for everyday use is Skin79 Beblesh Balm. It makes my skin look beautiful but it's so light you don't feel you're wearing makeup.

I am one of these people with dry skin and large pores. Foundations usually look horrible and cakey/flakey on me and i have tried hundreds over the years. These two above are perfect.

Teacaketotty · 15/04/2021 11:03

@citygirl1961 cool vanilla is my shade. I’m somewhere between pale and light tan I would say but it blends well and like I say no orange, pinky or ashy just perfect skin colour.

Teacaketotty · 15/04/2021 11:05

Also if you like no7 hydraluminous try the lift and luminate serum concealer from them! It’s great - I think they are on 3 for 2 just now.

fistasledge · 16/04/2021 13:58

Thank you very much to everyone that has contributed with recommendations. I am on the way to Kingston (first time to the shops for over a year as shielding but now have had both vaccines 👌🏻)

So I think I'll defo try No 7 as quite a few people have commented. I'll try and get some samples of the others too before spending money.

Thanks so much. Wish me luck

And thank you! I do have a magnifier mirror but have had it for a decade so nothing new. I know it's all relative but compared to how it used to be pre rosacea it now just looks awful to me so I'm keen to try and find something to make me feel better

My fave has already been suggested (Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua), but OP don't be afraid to ask for a sample if you're worried about the price! I have really reactive skin no also get a sample before buying, never had a problem (I do explain why, and if it doesn't work I always go back and thank them anyway!

FreekStar · 16/04/2021 14:10

I have rosacea too and have similar problems. I like Nars sheer glow foundation- it’s not heave but has enough coverage to cover redness. It’s not especially dewy, but dewy foundations don’t last on me so I avoid them . The only way to avoid foundation sticking to flakes is to get rid of them- use a washcloth to slightly exfoliate skin when cleansing and a Salicylic acid toner lilies Paulas choice 2% bha liquid - this issue anti inflammatory and also helps with redness.

XiCi · 16/04/2021 22:08

Chanel vitalumiere. NOTHING compares. Nothing
So today on the basis of this thread I picked up the No7 hydraluminous and its nowhere near as good good as chanel. Made my skin look a bit flat so £15:wasted basically. I always fall for it, every single time, thinking that there may be something better or cheaper out there but won't be wasting my money again

KoalaOok · 16/04/2021 22:10

@Teacaketotty

No7 Hydraluminous - it’s just so so good.
Was about to suggest this or Nars Sheer Glow
LarsErickssong · 17/04/2021 06:58

I've been using Armani luminous silk for years but been feeling like I need to switch it up recently so think I will give the no7 a go, less than half the price of the Armani too which is a bonus!

fistasledge · 26/04/2021 11:45

I just wanted to come back to this thread in case anyone finds it and is asking the same

My trip to Kingston didn't end up being that fruit fall as I took my toddler with me who was more interested in running around the shops as he's never been before (lockdown)

However, yesterday I did get the No 7 suggested foundation. I agree it glided on and didn't stick to any dry bits. A few hours later and it's still holding well. It's not as good coverage as some of the others that were drying but therein probably is my problem. The thicker, better coverage ones were not good for my skin.

I think I need to build this one a bit more as it's evened out my skin but not covered some of the belmishes and red areas very well BUT my skin looks slightly glowy and not at all dry.

Sadly the counters near me for Chanel and Gucci which were the others ones recommended to me, haven't reopened. So I couldn't ask for samples

Thanks so much for all the recommendations!

I have lots of foundations that I have worn once but have now given them a new lease of life by adding a few drops of oil to them. Same coverage but goes on easy and lasts with a smooth finish.

I use Pixi rose oil but other oils will do.

janeyfreef · 26/04/2021 12:15

Light expert by terry expensive but best I've ever used 😁
