How to hide my massive forehead - curly hair

I’ve always had a big forehead but since having kids my hairline seems to have retreated even further. I’ve had a fringe for the last few years which covers it well. As my hair is naturally curly though I have to straighten the fringe to stop it sticking up vertically and then need to either have my hair scraped back or spend a good 90 minutes straightening it or it looks odd to have a poker straight fringe and messy curls.

I love my natural curls and think they really suit me. If I have any layers cut in at all that are above my ears the hair will stick straight up and look like a coiled spring.

Any tips at all for covering forehead? Has anyone managed to make a curly fringe work or styled a straight fringe (and I mean dead straight, anything other than blow drying it straight down and then straightening results in it sticking out like the visor of a baseball cap) with curly hair?

How about keeping it all curly, having a side parting and then just having a few shorter layers at the front, so not a full fringe.

ThePricklySheep · 01/04/2021 12:28

I just did an image search for curly fringe and some really look good. I think the key is that they need to be thick and long.

Oblomov21 · 01/04/2021 13:37

Why are you straightening your fringe?. I adore curly hair, with a curly fringe.

UnderHisAye · 01/04/2021 13:39

Taylor Swift and her curly fringe is a brilliant look!

Please don’t do a poker straight fringe with curly hair. That just never looks good imo.

Don’t have any tips on a curly fringe but hopefully someone else will come along to give you advice on that!

Always remember, too, that the things about ourselves that we feel are absolutely glaringly obviously ‘wrong’ aren’t usually uppermost when others look at us, because they see us as a whole.

At one point I did the straight fringe whilst leaving the rest of my curly. My hairdresser suggested it, and I did get to like it, after initially thinking it was odd. I stopped because it started to damage it. I currently have it curly, sort of parted at the side, just a bit too long until I can get to the hairdressers.

Plus, Curly bangs are all the rage for 2021, apparently.

But I can’t have a curly fringe, that’s the whole problem

Have you tried the curly girl method? That might sort your curls out enough that you could have a curly fringe?

Or go for a long fringe, maybe? That way you should have enough weight on it that it won’t spring up...

Clydie89 · 01/04/2021 15:48

Try a side parting and have a bit sweeping across the front and behind your ear?

I have almost the opposite problem in that I'm doing cgm and love my curls, but my hairs really thick at the front and naturally wants to fall forward. However anything I've tried so far to pin it or hold it back wrecks the curl pattern!

someonelockthefridgealready · 01/04/2021 16:38

I have a fringe at the moment, but two years ago I had my waves/curls in a side parting and pinned the front curl under the hair at the side, so it looked like a fringe. I don't know if I'm explaining very well, but there are Youtube tutorials out there for fake fringe/bangs for curly hair.

Few nice pictures in here of curly hair but straight fringe

Funkmaster · 01/04/2021 20:44

Do you have proper curl by curl curly cuts? Im not curly but my daughter is and i have to say its worth the effort to find a good curly hairdresser

tortoiselover100 · 01/04/2021 21:21

Can you wear a really nice hair band, one that covers a lot of your forehead?

MoonfacedMilksop · 01/04/2021 22:54

clydie89 side parting with it clipped underneath hair is the best I can manage to do. It always looks very deliberate though iyswim and almost draws more attention to my forehead (although admittedly that might just be me being paranoid)

Am i right that the issue is that if your hair is fringe length it won't sit well? Could you try curl training? Or use root clips to pin it down while it dries?

Sickoffamilydrama · 02/04/2021 08:17

What you need is a shag.....haircut that is I have one at the moment and it really works with wavy/ curly hair. You have to go with the messiness but that is part of why it works.

Embrace the big forehead. I’m not saying have scraped back hair, but learn to live with it. I’ve got a massive forehead and have long since given up 😂

ThePricklySheep · 02/04/2021 08:46

Tell us more about why you can’t have a curly fringe.
Would some extra length weigh it down etc? As suggested above, can you pin it down overnight into bigger curls?

MoonfacedMilksop · 02/04/2021 08:54

I’ve tried pinning it down overnight but it still just pings up and looks like the peak of a baseball cap. With the added bonus of a random link from where it’s been pinned.

I’ve not tried curl training, that looks like it might be worth a go.

My hairdresser is brilliant, the first one I’ve ever known who actually really knows what to do with curly hair as she has very similar hair herself. I did try a shag cut but I ended up looking like an 80’s footballer with a mullet.

MoonfacedMilksop I have no solutions, but I offer sympathy. People who don't have curly hair just don't get how determined it is to do its own thing.

I have pictures from my schooldays where I look like an extra from the Tefal adverts. Currently, I am wearing wide headbands as I have no desire to rock a Hair Bear vibe. Obviously, they have to be wide headbands or I resemble John McEnroe c.1982. And people tell me how lucky I am to have naturally curly hair...

MoonfacedMilksop · 02/04/2021 11:48

stationview argh, people telling me how lucky I am to have curly hair makes me want to scream. I regularly spend a good couple of hours trying to make my hair look presentable and still end up looking like Phil Spector by lunchtime.

Moonfaced I grew my hair in the 90s, but looking at the mercifully few photos now, I just think WTF? I look like Brian May Confused

I have a great hairdresser who (in normal times) cuts my hair short every six weeks or so. It's lovely for 3 / 4 weeks, but then becomes wilder and wilder. The front is left longer to be a fringe, but when my hair is newly washed (and conditioner makes this worse) the fringe pings up like yours. I tend to try to tame it with some styling wax, but it does look a bit odd for a few days until my hair starts getting greasy again. The only silver lining is that my hair is so thick, coarse and dry that I don't wash it very often.

When my DD was born, people speculated, "I wonder if she'll have curly hair?" I never had a single second's doubt that she would.

I've tried many products & the best for weighing down but also giving definition is Olive Oil Styling Gel [[https://g.co/kgs/QMBeYr this]]

Also are you over thinking sometimes my hair is all over the place but does it really matter & definitely it looks very big & 80s rock star at times but actually when I see similar hair I think oh that looks nice I think often we are own worse critics.

This is mine at the moment it's wind swept from the park but who cares 🤷‍♀️
