Can ears be re-pierced?

I had mine pierced as a young’un, with two holes in each ear (including one in the cartilage bit at the top). I haven’t worn earrings for about 20 years but have decided I’d like to again. I can still see the holes but I’m too scared to try and put anything through them! Can they be opened up again?

Following this OP as I have the same question! I definitely can’t get earrings in mine but wondered if they can re-pierce the same hole?

DramaAlpaca · 28/03/2021 18:19

Try putting a bit of vaseline on the posts and easing them in really gently.

Abraxan · 28/03/2021 18:26

Yes they can. I had mine re-pierced several years back. It was a bit more painful than the first time iirr, possibly due to scar tissue in the way I guess.

Itsjustaride8w737 · 28/03/2021 18:27

Yes to above poster, vaseline works wonders.

I redid mine, felt a small pop as the earring went through the skin but no blood or pain.

Insomnia5 · 28/03/2021 18:27

Yes, they can be re pierced

RonBurgundyspanpipe · 28/03/2021 18:28

Yes. My first piercings ripped when I got the earring caught on my sleeve. Put me off for a few years then got them reprieved for my wedding. Don't remember it being painful but haven't worn earrings again as they irritate me.

Ohgoodness34 · 28/03/2021 18:29

Yes i had mine repierced, same hole (with a needle at a decent piercing place) absolutely fine

Mrsfrumble · 28/03/2021 19:24

Fabulous! Thank you for all the helpful replies. I’m guessing professional places won’t be open again for a while (and I’m too much of a coward to do it myself, especially the cartilage one) but when they do I’ll give it a whirl!

@DramaAlpaca, your suggestion inspired me to try my closed over holes. I stopped wearing earrings when the DC were tiny, so at least a decade. DD lent me her piercing studs, I sterilised them and used Vaseline. To my amazement the earrings slid straight in, then I eased them out the back. There was some gunk pushed out, which showed where the exit hole was 🤢.

Triffid1 · 31/03/2021 16:45

You should try before going to get repierced. DH hasn't work an ear ring in YEARS but he can still put one in. Surgical spirits on both ear and ear ring and give it a go.

Otherwise yes, you can redo it.

MrsVeryTired · 31/03/2021 16:47

Try putting the blunt end of needle through, that's how I reopened mine, it will only go through if the hole is still there and won't cut or pierce you.

Looked very fetching in my nose piercing Grin

DustyMaiden · 31/03/2021 16:52

I tried to get mine redone at jewellers and Claire’s accessories and was told they would do it but not in exactly the same place. So DH did it for me and it was really easy.

Oh, well done @ShaunaTheSheep (love your username) glad it worked. Enjoy wearing earrings again Smile

Easterbunnyishoppingmad · 31/03/2021 19:44

Ice pack on the back.. Sterilise am earring and shove... Managed to get one of mine open after 30 years!

LaLoose · 31/03/2021 19:51

I re-pierced mine 3 weeks ago with the aid of my second cousin on the phone (tattooist / piercer by trade). Just sit in front of the telly for 30 minutes. Have a glass of wine (it helps if you're squeamish). Gold or silver studs x 4, not base metals. One at a time, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle. Eventually they will go in. PLEASE wipe your ears with pre-injection site wipes first (buy online). And afterwards wipe again once the butterfly backs are in.

Don't wear them for more than half a day at first, and always wipe with pre-injection wipes after you take them out.

Good luck!

LaLoose · 31/03/2021 19:52

Yes I forgot to say to wipe the stud pole itself with pre-injection wipe too!

HamFisted · 31/03/2021 19:57

Do you know they've healed up? I thought after a certain length of time wearing earrings the skin stops trying to grow over the hole and instead grows inside the hole to create a channel that'll never heal again.

Why would you go to the trouble of repiercing to take them out again every day, to have to push back through already upset tissue (if you haven't worn them in years). Confused

Never heard of this in my life and I have lots of piercings. Get titanium or surgical stainless steel as they're hypo allergenic. Gold needs to be above 14k to be hypoallergenic or it could cause a reaction.

Good luck op. I still have body piercings I can repierce from nearly 20 years ago

My DH had his ear re-pierced about twenty years ago after not wearing an earring for about 15 years. The piercer (?) who did it told him that the hole never fully heals. She described it as being like a corridor with wallpaper at either end. So skin may grow over the front and back of the hole but the hole itself through your lobe is still there IYSWIM.

lifeinlimbo2020 · 31/03/2021 20:41

Ice them first too 👍

Wow thanks for this. My second lobe piercing that I last wore earrings in 25 years ago are now in use. I never would have believed it and was about to buy the home piercing kit on Amazon mentioned earlier. It took a little nerve and perseverance but I got there.
lonelySam · 31/03/2021 21:51

Yes you can repierce them, I had mine redone in a professional tattoo studio after 15 years or so, they pierced in the same place as the old ones.

DramaAlpaca · 31/03/2021 22:13

@bigbella26 oh good! Happy to have helped Smile

indemMUND · 31/03/2021 22:17

For goodness sake don't use a piercing gun, nor take them in and out as PPs have recommended. Go to a professional when things are back open.

I'm not 100% sure but my first set can be left for ages and I can get earrings in with ease, but my second set start to close up if I've not had anything in them for a few days. The second set are over 15 years old and have always been like that.
