Kimonos worn outside

I asked on another thread but no luck

Has anyone seen women wearing kimono or kimono style stuff in a bar or restaurant?

Eg.
onehundredstars.co.uk/products/duster-coat-stork-slate?_pos=3&_sid=8fdaea662&_ss=r

Thanks!

You would be slated on another thread for wearing your dressing gown.

CommanderBurnham · 23/03/2021 10:48

It has to be done carefully. Some people can pull it off, some can't.

Highforareason · 23/03/2021 10:48

As I said on the other thread about 'wafting' (love that word!) I do and have some 2nd hand silk Japanese Hapi/Haori jackets and a couple of long ones I wear in the house, inc cotton ones which I have forgotten the name of. Very comfy and so well made, you can get some really good ones at markets and specific 2nd hand kimono shops all over Japan.

Also have a couple of 100 stars

GrumpyHoonMain · 23/03/2021 10:50

That’s not a kimono in my opinion. It’s really a cheap looking coverall

I love traditional Japanese style kimonos in real raw materials and if I saw someone wearing one in a bar, even if it was worn casually, I’d be well impressed.

professionalnomad · 23/03/2021 10:52

I have a gorgeous friend who is a textile designer. She LIVES in pretty slips with a kimono thrown over the top, statement jewelry and beautiful sandals all summer

She looks fabulous and chic.

AcornAutumn · 23/03/2021 10:53

That site doesn't have many pictures of people wearing stuff

How about this?

That link doesn't work for me

Is she dressed that way in a sort of regular place? So...not a cocktail bar where prices start at £15 but a Drake and Morgan or just regular London bar?

Masaba Gupta has some beautiful kaftan dresses and kimono style wrap dresses. I have a few of her kaftans as I love them.

Mumsnut · 23/03/2021 10:58

I have something like the one Acorn has posted, though hip length and silk. I have worn it in restaurants over jeans and a silk cami

LunaHeather · 23/03/2021 10:58

Ooh I could definitely wear this!

Might be an ebay morning.

Perhaps I mean kimono jacket really.

Ah, yes, I am short so that's a factor.

I also can't imagine wearing it on the Tube but on a hot day, it would be good actually.

I have this which isn’t really a kimono but probably better than a lot of stuff you can get from the UK at a similar price. It’s a crepe cape and really light so probably not good for when it’s cold. I would wear it everywhere from weatherspoons to high end places. But I guess it requires you to be confident lol

I have two shorter hip length open style jackets, one in black and one in black with florals that work for the bar or pub - anything longer definitely gives off dressing gown vibes, sorry!

They were from ASOS a few years ago.

Bythehairywartsonmywitchychin · 23/03/2021 11:21

I wear things like this during the warmer weather, you can dress them up for evening wear of down during the day with a pair of shorts etc

cataclysmiclife · 23/03/2021 11:25

I have the one hundredth stars 'throw over' much less like a dressing gown but still swishy and lovely

Yes, I will think it over. I want to cover my bum but don't want anything longer.

It might be a case of buying longer and altering. I could make a scarf!

[quote Bythehairywartsonmywitchychin]I also wear things like this to go over shorts/jeans (it looks better in real life than the picture)

Oh, I have similar in blue

It doesn't seem unusual to wear outside though.

I’ve just looked at the one hundred stars website, the throwover style might be best if you want to cover your bum. They’re a reasonable price too. I’m tempted to buy one myself 😉

ChaToilLeam · 23/03/2021 11:37

I have a One Hundred Stars short kimono and a Gudrun Sjöden long one. I wear them over long cotton dresses in the summer and waft happily around anywhere I like. Probably looks mildly eccentric where I live but not outrageous. I’m very short, btw, but can carry off wafty if I’m careful about proportions.

Bythehairywartsonmywitchychin · 23/03/2021 11:37

@cataclysmiclife are the throwovers wafty? I’m tempted to buy one

Yes, I think I'd just have to cope with looking eccentric. Normally I am invisible so it does seem odd.

Do you mean in Japan or in, say, Croydon?

Tal45 · 23/03/2021 12:01

I don't see why you couldn't wear it out, I think it all depends on what you wear under it.
