Sketchers

Are sketchers considered naff or frumpy? I'm early 40's..

Xmasbaby11 · 20/03/2021 19:50

I am 45 and have been wearing Skechers my whole adult life! I had no idea they were considered frumpy. There's no way my 80yo mum would wear anything so modern looking. I find it hard to buy footwear as I have plantar fasciitis so I'm happy these are comfy and IMO look good.

StepOutOfLine · 20/03/2021 19:56

They cured my plantar fascitis that the I'd been suffering with for almost a year. Recommended to me by the specialist I saw.
Some of the designs are a bit garish but others are fine. I wouldn't be without a pair now.

WindyPudding · 20/03/2021 19:58

I have some - I'm in my 50s, but generally don't wear old lady things (I know that's what all old ladies probably think though...) My other trainers are Scott's and Novesta rather than Hotter and Ecco IYSWIM.

I like them, they're black and gold here

I've always been vaguely aware they're meant to be naff but they are not top-level naff IMO.

theMoJareajoke · 20/03/2021 20:00

Love my sketchers

Popcornbetty · 20/03/2021 20:03

I don’t think they are naff at all and I love those black and gold ones and would wear those, I’m early thirties.

garlictwist · 20/03/2021 20:09

I love them too. So comfy. My other half hates them and mocks me incessantly for being frumpy and old. But I don't give a fuck.

LubaLuca · 20/03/2021 20:11

Frumpy means dowdy, so I wouldn't call them that at all. Some of the styles are a bit gaudy if anything, but usually they're unnoticeable.

WhyDoesItAlways · 20/03/2021 20:21

I'm kids 30's and my favourite winter shoes are skechers. Tan coloured, fur lined ankle boots. So comfy, I wear with jeans most days.

I also have street cleats that look like those black and white vans which are equally as comfy.

Can't imagine any elderly person wearing either of these styles. But yep, some of the Skechers can look a bit grumpy but not all of them.

DareIask · 20/03/2021 20:44

A look through the website will show you a huge variety of styles... some very frumpy. Some anything but.

IMO anyway

ElderMillennial · 20/03/2021 20:56

Which style?

Sketchers is a brand and they do loads of styles. They are a comfy rather than a trendy brand overall but some items are more stylish than others.

SpeckledyHen · 20/03/2021 21:15

Love them . Nothing on this planet to compare in terms of comfort .

Gwenhwyfar · 20/03/2021 21:16

Who cares? They're comfortable so good for when you have to walk for a long time e.g. shopping.

Spied · 20/03/2021 21:17

I'm 40 and don't feel old enough to wear them.

thelegohooverer · 20/03/2021 21:27

If you’re worried about the way they look or the message they convey, don’t risk putting your feet in a pair. They completely destroy your ability to tolerate uncomfortable shoes (which is basically anything else that isn’t sketchers)
Consider yourself warned! Grin

Zig4zag · 20/03/2021 21:39

I love them. But i don't care about trendy. I am on my feet all day.

yikesanotherbooboo · 20/03/2021 22:04

They are awful as fashion items but I have reached an age where if I find a pair of comfortable shoes I am not going to worry about how fashion forward they are. I wish I had thought this way when I was young too.

fellrunner85 · 20/03/2021 22:18

I put them in the same mental category as White Stuff/ Fat Face/ Joules etc.
It's the "look" my mum and her friends (all late 60s/early 70s) go for - ditsy print top, jeans or wide-leg trousers, and Sketchers. With a chunky necklace and cardie. Sometimes the clothes may be Sainsburys TU instead of "real" White Stuff, as they're not a wealthy bunch, but the overall look is the same.

Although there may be some styles of Sketchers that aren't as "frumpy" (argh I hate that word) as others, there's something about the brand itself that has that feel to it.
It's difficult to put a finger on; but just as you'd instinctively "know" a White Stuff or Fat Face top, even without the logo, it's the same with Sketchers. They just lack any edge whatsoever.

ElderMillennial · 20/03/2021 22:26

All this talk fo comfy Sketchers is making me want some!

I have some sketchers trainers for running but not shoes.

Literallynoidea · 20/03/2021 22:43

Omg they are hideous and so far from being cool that even my 80 yr old mum wouldn't wear them

DareIask · 20/03/2021 23:10

Blimey. Such strong feelings against a brand.

DareIask · 20/03/2021 23:11

Ageist? Yep

Gemma2019 · 20/03/2021 23:18

I've got several pairs of Skechers (as well as several pairs of other brands) as they are so comfortable and I like the way they look. I don't care if they aren't considered trendy - I'm 45 not 12.

DarcyJack · 20/03/2021 23:25

I absolutely love them and give precisely no fucks what anyone else thinks!

RampantIvy · 20/03/2021 23:27

but terribly bad for your feet

Why?

I put them in the same mental category as White Stuff/ Fat Face/ Joules etc.
It's the "look" my mum and her friends (all late 60s/early 70s) go for - ditsy print top, jeans or wide-leg trousers, and Sketchers

Do you always make nasty, sneery comments about other people’s clothes and footwear choices? Are your fashion choices always so superior?

I think those of you saying that Sketchers are hideous probably haven’t looked at their website lately. They make footwear in such a wide variety of designs these days. What they excel in is making footwear that is comfortable enough to walk around theme parks all day, or walk for miles on a city break.

I love my Sketchers and own three pairs. They are so insanely comfortable – even more comfortable than my slippers.

I have just had a look at their website. That was dangerous. Their range is so much better than it used to be. I can see 20 year old DD liking some of the styles. They aren't all old lady styles these days.

m0therofdragons · 20/03/2021 23:28

I’m 38 and have a pair of Sketchers for running. So so comfy and no blisters on a half marathon. I also have a pair of Nikes so really go for what fits and is in the colour I like. I wouldn’t wear trainers outside of running except converse though.
