How to look more trendy/ stylish

I need help to look more ’with it’ as my dear old mum would say Smile .

I wear a suit or dresses and jackets during the week and am ok with my work wardrobe, it’s the weekends I struggle with.

I wear mainly jeans and would like a jacket rather than my usual hoodie to go with them . My daughter bought me a pair of white trainers and has persuaded me to roll my jeans up a bit when I wear them (we used to call ankle length trousers ‘Jack ups’ and meant you had outgrown them !)

I am such a ditherer and am swinging between a denim jacket , long trench coat, blazer , biker jacket.
Can anyone help me to make me and my jeans look more stylish please?

H&M online do a really good selection of black trousers. I bought some tapered cropped ones and some wide leg. For the price they're surprisingly good quality and look smart and "with it" (my mum says this too Grin)... Don't bag and wash well. Can't go wrong for under 20 quid! Just remember to go a dress size up, they come up small...

Atalune · 07/03/2021 15:58

@OverweightPidgeon good gravy you can wear ANYTHING!

You’d look good in a potato sack!

OverweightPidgeon · 07/03/2021 16:11

Aw thank you

I was a size 8 in trousers before lockdown and I don’t feel comfortable at the moment, menopause has definitely set in around my middle , so I’m doing a bit of low carbing , only because all my work clothes are now too tight and I can’t afford to replace them.

Exactly the same here, size 8 and 5'8" tall. But everything has become rather tight! 😂. I've not put much weight on but have lost muscle and increased fat.. My legs and bum especially are less toned. Likely as a result of wine and cheese and crackers consumption.

Op I buy lots of my bits on eBay.

I also have an app called style book. You have to photograph everything on n your wardrobe then it lets you put outfits together like the phot attached.

We have limited storage space in my house and I usually end up putting winter/summer stuff away depends on the season and then I forget about it.

With this app it helps me to plan what I will actually use so I know what to pack away. Anything I haven't worn in 12 mo this I sell on eBay.

I really need a cull of my wardrobe so that app sounds like a good idea, thank you

@BeatricePrior do you buy used items ? I’ve had some shockers
( mainly from China) from eBay 😩

I did get a really nice used boucle jacket for work last year though

Sometimes used, sometimes new.

I have been buying bits of an app called VOVA.

They do good copies. I have a couple of gucci belts, a gucci disco bag etc.

The clothes you need to order a couple of sizes bigger in my experience.

Also if you use the VOVA app you can see all the copies, if you go on the website you can't.

I like the whistles barrel leg jeans, paired with a white v neck t shirt, blazer, white trainers, little cross body bag.

Of slim joggers with nikes or new balance trainers, a grey hoodie, and then a leather biker on top.

Nice painted nails in a spring colour like lemon or Lilac, crisp clean clothes, good eyebrows.

OverweightPidgeon · 10/03/2021 00:00

I’ve had a look at the Vova site and they’ve got loads of great stuff, it’s all in $ though and I’m in the UK , I don’t know if the postage will be expensive.

@Atalune I have ordered a couple of boyfriend v neck t shirts and have snaffled a black biker jacket from my daughter that she doesn’t wear any more ( to make up for her nicking my mascara!)
I’m not sure I can afford the jeans at the moment but I love how they look.

I have gone completely off piste (for me) and ordered this dress that I could maybe wear with the biker jacket?

I'd say trench coat. You can wear it casual, business, posh, you can wear it with trainers, boots, hoodies, etc. I do though, have five trench coats... I might be a leetle bit obsessed...

OverweightPidgeon · 10/03/2021 08:46

I love trench coats and have been tempted but I’m not sure I would actually wear one , I’m trying so hard not to buy stuff on a ‘maybe’ basis anymore, I’ve wasted so much money in the past.
Having said that , if you’ve got any that you don’t want, I’ll take one off your hands ! ( I am joking- definitely not looking for freebies Smile )

Asos Farleigh mom jeans are cheaper and also a nice shape. Also topshop Elvis jeans.

Love the dress. Will look great with the leather jacket. You can also pull over a black crew neck fine gauge knit jumper with that dress. Or even a grey hoodie with the jacket for a very on trend layering look.

HVe a browse through the hush website as I think their styling is lovely and it’s all a mix of basics. With the odd printed item here and there.

Iamthewombat · 10/03/2021 10:37

Don’t buy the jacket. Don’t buy the dress.

The jacket looks 1980s and not in a good way.

The dress is attempting to be a version of that Zara dress that everyone had a couple of years ago, but it isn’t quite working. Even the model looks mumsy in it. You can do better.

BehindMyEyes · 10/03/2021 10:57

I agree with the utility style jacket . I got one for a fiver in Matalan sale last year ! There's some on Debenhams in the sale www.debenhams.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/prod_10701_10001_057030650895?sku=9211845
You can wear with denim/black jeans and a white t shirt under and it looks great and the obligatory white (but not big and sporty) trainers .

I am also a fan of biker jackets having 5 leather ones in various colours but they are a bit more dressy . I also have a trench coat and love it as you can again wear something simple but then immediately look so pulled together . I would say stay away from shackets though - just my personal opinion .

OverweightPidgeon · 10/03/2021 13:34

I’m not going to buy the jacket Smile

@OverweightPidgeon you have to get the app not the website.

The app has totally different things on to the website. No idea why.

OverweightPidgeon · 11/03/2021 18:27

Ah ok thank you

Don’t buy the jacket. Don’t buy the dress.

This is the best advice so far on this thread. They are both incredibly frumpy.

I don't understand why some posters have an obsession with wanting to look "trendy" (and then are usually advised by other posters to buy things that are so not trendy). Is it a lack of confidence? Buy what you like and just enjoy it!! Who cares what other people think? If you love it, that's all that matters.

OverweightPidgeon · 11/03/2021 19:18

@BeatricePrior I’ve got the app now, thank you.

I've bought t shirts on there for my partner and socks. Buy a size or two bigger is my advice.

For bags and stuff it's great but you pay what you expect to get.

Good copies but not particularly hard wearing.

The Gucci belts I have bought they were a fiver each and I have no complaints.

I couldn't afford or justify the cost of a real one!

I've bought Christmas decorations etc and it's been fine.

OverweightPidgeon · 11/03/2021 19:34

@HundredMilesAnHour yes it is a massive lack of confidence, I actually feel really rubbish about myself tbh. I just want to look nice.

I think lots of us loose our way a bit at certain points. I know when I was about 36 after my second child and my hair fell out. I wore some really bad things. I had a burgundy linen shirt with ballon sleeves and a grandad collar. It was also slightly smocked. That and boot cut jeans. And then I had some green patent walking shoes. I don’t know what happened. I was a (fashion) disaster.

@OverweightPidgeon you have all the ingredients of a strong look. Perhaps start with one small change like a more modern Jean shape with trainers. And then build from there.
