How to look more trendy/ stylish

I need help to look more ’with it’ as my dear old mum would say Smile .

I wear a suit or dresses and jackets during the week and am ok with my work wardrobe, it’s the weekends I struggle with.

I wear mainly jeans and would like a jacket rather than my usual hoodie to go with them . My daughter bought me a pair of white trainers and has persuaded me to roll my jeans up a bit when I wear them (we used to call ankle length trousers ‘Jack ups’ and meant you had outgrown them !)

I am such a ditherer and am swinging between a denim jacket , long trench coat, blazer , biker jacket.
Can anyone help me to make me and my jeans look more stylish please?

Swedish Clogs are very in this year- I am currently loving Kitty clogs- but the lowest sole they do. They look like they might be a bit wider and therefore more flattering than most.

These-- footwear can be an easy update

Add a long necklace to plain jumpers. Instant sophistication x

OverweightPidgeon · 12/03/2021 13:58

@MiaMarshmallows I could definitely do that , thank you.

So, my dress arrived today, it might be a poor man’s copy of a posher more expensive one , but , I don’t care ! It fits really well, is nice and swooshy , looks ok with the biker and denim jacket and trainers AND it has made me a bit happier with how I look.

And @PaulHollywoodsLowHangingFruit I think it would look ok with clogs

I like the dress! Glad you like it on too! Now go swish around your kitchen with a glass of wine tonight xx

Biker jacket, and wear your denim jacket underneath if it will fit!

Christ on a bike no... I recall wearing those (they were ok) when I was approx 21 back in early 90's and though they were ok they could be hard to walk in if higher... Grin

Clogs! Oh no! I'm also keen to look more trendy, for when we eventually emerge into the world. Not sure about clogs though!

I normally look at what's in & Other Stories for a few ideas of stuff that's not too frumpy but you don't have to be 20 to wear.

Thing is clogs are definitely having a moment whether you want to be part of that moment or not is another thing!

Today I wore

Mom jeans (asos farliegh)
Black chelsea DM boots
Black long sleev top
Black cashmere crew neck jumper
The a cord khaki shaket over shirt
Leopard print scarf

I was sort of functional and warm. The over shirt is from Zara and it’s so versatile and comfy. I think they are in the sale right now.

OverweightPidgeon · 12/03/2021 20:30

I like the idea of an over shirt with jeans , vest top , long necklace (?) , trainers or boots ?

pidge yes that sounds really nice!

Divebar2021 · 13/03/2021 10:13

Without the long necklace.

BehindMyEyes · 13/03/2021 10:21

@Divebar2021

Without the long necklace.
Yes this instantly makes me think of the M and S Per Una tops with the attached necklaces.
OverweightPidgeon · 13/03/2021 14:27

Right, no necklace ! Thank you Grin

You've had some good advice here OP, you don't say how old you are but I suspect you're a similar age to me, and you're the same size and height.

I don't think it's necessarily about being 'with-it', I've got no desire to wear what the majority of 20 year-olds wear, not because I'm 'too-old', but because I'm not necessarily as trend-led as your average 20 year old. I want to wear interesting clothes with maybe a nod to what's current but I'm now in a position where I can spend a lot on my clothes, I don't want one season wonders, I want a wardrobe that's stylish, works for my lifestyle, and I can put together a 'look' depending on what doing or how I'm feeling.

I think you need some hardworking basics as a core and then you can add interesting and more seasonal/transient pieces to add interest.

So you need to work out what your lifestyle demands, find some pictures of how you'd like to look and work out the key elements, and then get shopping!

Net a Porter is good if you look at how they style each item and show ways to wear them, even if you can't afford the prices!

Thank you all for the fantastic advice, I’m 56 and when I say ‘with it’ I think I mean stylish! I feel invisible .
I’ve been trawling the internet for inspiration and layering seems to be a thing , I only ever wear a top and bottoms .

I agree that jackets and coats seem to make an outfit.

I think you need to find a look you like and make it work for you. Which famous women do you admire style-wise? What is it about their style you like? Take some elements from that and make it work for you.

Some people are more casual, some more glam and polished, some like a minimalist style, some more maximallist. Try and find your 'base-line' and work from there, you'll find it much easier if you can identify your style-tribe.

And always remember, fashion and clothes are fun and something to enjoy. Mid-50s are a great time to regain your mojo, embrace it!
