Time to change from skinny jeans?

I'm getting a bit fed up of living in skinny jeans.
I think want I fancy may be girlfriend or mom (awful names). Can anyone recommend some please. I'm 5'4" size 10 but not skinny especially round the middle.

I'd probably avoid Mom styles if you aren't skinny of middle. They really only suit thin teenage girls IMO. It's difficult moving on from skinnies isn't it? I've been wearing men's slim jeans but I'm a lot taller than you so they tend to fit my height.

Youngsters started wearing mom jeans in an ironic way, with their fluffy jackets and dyed grey hair.
Decent quality skinnies will always be flattering. Ripped ones make them a bit more edgy.

alanpartridgefromtheoasthouse · 06/03/2021 11:02

I think a cropped wide leg fit looks most fashionable these days. I've got some from Jigsaw which I like.

HummusAndCarrotSticks · 06/03/2021 11:06

I think mom jeans can suit bigger sizes, but if you're an apple shape, then I don't think that they would suit? Are you slim of leg, less slim of tum? I think maybe GF would be better. My friend is an extreme pear shape and she looks awesome in mom jeans.

I’ve started wearing slim rather than skinny jeans, I am a boring dresser though lol!

CatSickYellowSocks · 06/03/2021 11:44

I love a mom jean! I’m a 16/18 and they look great, modern and different. But they do take a bit of getting used to, tucking tops in or wearing shorter tops with them. Try a few different brands to see what you like. I’ve got good ones from Monki, Asos and river island. I’ve found with Mom or balloon jeans if you measure your waist and get jeans that fit that seems to work best for me. You could always try a high waist straight leg as a gateway jean if you don’t want to dive straight in!

I totally agree - I'm so bored with skinnies. I've found some good styles in Sainsbury's - current favourite are a tapered style (think they call them carrot style?) and one with buttons which I think are called mom jeans. So much more comfy and flattering than skinnies. I do find they look better with a tucked in top.

I am back to rocking a boot cut - I don't care that I am old enough to have worn them first time round Grin

They suit me as they help to balance me out (very top heavy) I do like a slim cut thigh on them though.

Lamentations · 06/03/2021 16:04

@SnakeRabbitMouse

Does anyone find they get a lower tummy bulge in mom jeans though? Blush I just can't wear them with a tucked in or cropped top and they look silly otherwise don't they?
Often referred to as a piss tank. Yes.

I have decided that everyone gets one and therefore I'm just going to rock it.
SarahBellam · 06/03/2021 16:06

I’ve always looked way better in a boot cut or a straight than a skinny. I don’t think skinnies suit that many people really.

whenwillthemadnessend · 06/03/2021 16:19

I'm going back to full on flares in summer. I love flares with wedges and summer tops but they are more tricky in winter as they get so wet on the hems.

Miseryl · 06/03/2021 16:47

I don't care if they aren't fashionable any more, they can prise my skinny jeans from my cold dead hands. I have never worn a style of jean so flattering and practical. I will never return to the trailing horrors of boot cut/baggy/flares from '90s & early '00s.

huuuuunnnndderrricks · 06/03/2021 16:55

I always wear loose jeans in the summer , girlfriend jeans are my favourite. I'm yet to find a pair of mom jeans that flatter my hourglass figure !

I think deep down everyone knows cropped wide legs look crap. It's a case of the emperor's new clothes.

Try slim fit, mom or girlfriend/ boyfriend jeans and avoid anything that skims the ankle and looks like you did it yourself to a good pair of jeans

happytobemrsg · 06/03/2021 17:47

I much prefer a mom jean vs skinny but I always French tuck - otherwise I look too shapeless (I’m a size 10 rectangle). Recently found ones I like from H&M so bought them in 3 colours

Me too and I can't wait to wear mine!
elsaesmeralda · 06/03/2021 19:00

I'm size 10-12 with abit of a bloated baby belly but love mom jeans with a belt and tucked in T-shirt, I think they look great especially with converse
I do like skinnies but gone off high waist as makes my belly look bigger than it is !

These are great. Also done in petite

I with you! Skinnies in winter. Skinnies with the ankles turned up in spring/summer
Standrewsschool · 06/03/2021 21:28

Was looking at Mom jeans yesterday. The ones I was looking at all seemed short in the leg. Maybe that’s the style but it would annoy me.

DrCoconut · 06/03/2021 21:30

I like skinny jeans. I can't wear tucked in tops as I'd look pregnant due to my diastasis recti and I find bootcut/wide leg/flared trousers make me look short and dumpy (which I probably am) - skinny just looks far more flattering).

NuzzleandScratch · 06/03/2021 22:58

Just tagging onto this, but what shape jeans/trousers do people think best suits the large of calf? I know skinnies don't look best on me, but I'm on the shorter side, so baggy just makes me look dumpy.
