Designers are taking the piss

I was doing a bit of browsing on The Outnet’s clearance section whilst making dinner and for fun decided to find the most hideous garment for sale.

It was a close run thing but the winner was these heinous shoes from Stella McCartney:

Insult to injury alert: not only are they vile, but they are crafted from ‘vegan leather’. WTF is vegan leather? I looked it up and it is apparently the trendy new name for polyurethane.

She originally wanted £680 for those monstrosities. £680 for plastic shoes! Surely old Stella is taking the piss? Do people actually pay that for hideous plastic shoes?

I actually quite like them Blush the shape at least. I'd put up with the fauxskin if they were black.

Iamthewombat · 22/02/2021 23:57

Yes, I saw those too but they were eclipsed by the ones Imposted and the wide array of plastic clown shoes like this:

Stella McCartney uses vegan leather because she and her family are committed to anti-cruelty in fashion and she has done so much to show you don't need to use fur or leather for fashion. I think those heels are too high, but I also like them!

PawPawNoodle · 22/02/2021 23:59

I remember those 90s spice girl reject trainer platforms being quite popular with the fashion instagram influences some time ago, they'll be gutted to know their stellah macartnee shoes are in the sale bin.

Plonque · 23/02/2021 00:02

Nah, Pol wins hands down Grin

Iamthewombat · 23/02/2021 00:07

Does she need to charge £680 for polyurethane shoes to do so?

I go on The Outnet just for a laugh these days.
It's a bit like Harrods; full to the brim with gaudy horrors, like nylon nighties, 80s high-tops and balloon sleeve everything.

Happymum12345 · 23/02/2021 01:49

Just seen this fabulous coat on there, but unfortunately they only have it in a size 6, when I’m sadly not.

BlueThistles · 23/02/2021 02:02

the sizes left are always ...

4 6 8 🙄

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 23/02/2021 02:18

@Happymum12345

That coat looks hideous as if hit full on by mutating Covid! Is it meant to be on "trend" hazmat outerwear?

Snezcomb · 23/02/2021 08:43

Lots of brands use vegan leather now - not sure why the use of vegan leather is such a surprise to you given that many people don’t want to wear animal skins these days Confused

blisstwins · 23/02/2021 09:23

I agree the prices are absurd, but I think that about most designer products.

savvy7 · 23/02/2021 09:34

Vegan leather doesn't equal polyurethane - there are alternatives made from natural materials - but much of it is currently plastic based

ZaraW · 23/02/2021 09:43

More info on Stella McCartney website. I wish there were choices for vegan leather shoes. I like the vegan Birkenstocks.

It’s no surprise that people are vegan - they like to let you know, as a rule - but it is a surprise that the rag trade think that they can disguise the use of plastic by calling it ‘vegan leather’. And charge a fortune for it.

@Happymum1234 I could whip
You one up with a dressing gown and my Pom Pom maker 👍

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 23/02/2021 10:34

Yikes ugly shoes.
Calling it all Vegan leather is rather wanky. There is no such thing, Leather isn't vegan. So are they trying to pull the proverbial wool over the eyes of Vegans.

BehindMyEyes · 23/02/2021 10:43

Except I'm not a size 2 🤔

Iamthewombat · 23/02/2021 10:55

I’m all ears. Let’s hear about the naturally-derived fake leather. What is it made of? Fruit leather?

OP posts:
LongPauseNoAnswer · 23/02/2021 10:58

The irony of vegan leather - it's PLASTIC.

At least with real leather the entire animal is being used for human food, pet food and the skin for clothes etc.

But besides all of that, they're hideous.

Lanique · 23/02/2021 11:05

Good God, my eyes 🙈 what an absolute piss take. And that Covid Coat 😄. Designer fashion really is the Emporer's New Clothes.

Nothing wrong with vegans looking for alternatives to leather, nor Stella McC sourcing alternatives according to her principles, but everything wrong in wan lily dressing it up as Vegan Leather and charging a fortune for it.

Although tbf I'm really pleased that no animals were sacrificed for the sake of those monstrosities.

MonkeyNotOrgangrinder · 23/02/2021 11:05

I'm vegan and only 'let people know if they won't accept me saying no to bacon, sausages, cheesecake etc. If people keep telling you maybe it's because you can't accept that other people might not want to eat the crap that you eat??

Lanique · 23/02/2021 11:06

*Just a shame the environment must have taken a hit instead.
