www.johnlewis.com/whistles-shirred-waist-midi-dress-navy/p4959171

It's a nice enough dress, I've been looking for navy dress to go under a couple of textured jackets for work and this fits the bill, it's a thin, unlined viscose dress, smart enough for work and comfortable.

I paid £44 though. At £149 it would have been extortionate. Presumably that's why they have it still in the sale, do these companies ever expect to sell at full price?

sorry @Toorapid but I think its horrible at any price, I think its totally without style, boring and a shit length, send it back and keep your £44 for something a bit more stylish - imo john lewis is very overrated and tends towards the frumpy, for want of a better word, and further, if you find that dress in any way flattering I am willing to bet you have a fantastic figure that could look a million dollars in a better dress.

StrangerHereMyself · 10/02/2021 20:26

I think it’s a very nice work dress to wear as a neutral backdrop to a more showy jacket. Like hell would I get it dry cleaned every time I wore it though.

nevertrustaherdofcows · 10/02/2021 20:28

IME, viscose gets droopy and creased as soon as it is worn.

Toorapid · 10/02/2021 20:29

No, plan to wash it. Why on earth would a viscose dress need dry cleaning.

I like it and it is flattering. It's better quality than a £40 dress from Next or M&S

It’s so annoying when manufacturers label things as “dry clean only” just to cover their backs.

BikeRunSki · 10/02/2021 20:33

Well, there is a saying that something is only worth what anyone is prepared to pay for it. Since this dress is left in all sizes, it dies by look like many people were prepared to pay full price, or the first sale price, for it.

It’s a very officey dress though. I might have sold more if more people had been working in offices recently.

BikeRunSki · 10/02/2021 20:34

No, plan to wash it. Why on earth would a viscose dress need dry cleaning.

Because it’s terrible for shrinking IME.

Mumof3girlsandaboy · 10/02/2021 20:35

I like the dress.

GarlicZoflora · 10/02/2021 20:39

I like it but I try and not buy viscose as i find it shrinks if washed and I don’t do dry cleaning of dresses. Are you going to hand wash it on cold? If you do it soon let us know if it does shrink.

How is the fit? Reviews say it’s big?

dudsville · 10/02/2021 20:40

I love it when you click a link and instead of "5 people are looking at this now" it says 100+! Its a mn bomb!

Toorapid · 10/02/2021 20:53

Almost all my work dresses are viscose, as I avoid the plastic bag effect of polyester. Most don't need any ironing and I've never had one shrink.

Toorapid · 10/02/2021 20:55

I bought my usual size 10 and it fits well. Skims the hips but not tight.

Wendyhause · 10/02/2021 21:01

It looks nice on the model. Not spectacular but I like it.

Any chance of you showing us a pic of it on you? No head of course!

Toorapid · 10/02/2021 21:04

I think it looks better on me than it does on her Grin

I seem to have a long body, fixed waists are usually in the wrong place, so it's not as blousy as it is in the pic.

I'm not showing you though because I've decided I'm keeping it.

teawamutu · 10/02/2021 21:35

I love the shape, OP.

GarlicZoflora · 10/02/2021 21:45

Oh, I’m long bodied too. Ponders I’m never very sure if I’m a Whistles 10 or 12 though.
Glad you e never had anything shrink. I’ve not bought viscose since I shrunk my beloved 90s viscose tea dress.

GarlicZoflora · 10/02/2021 21:47

Oh, I hesitated and you lot got in there first! Only teeny sizes left.

Clangerschick · 10/02/2021 21:49

I like this. It’s a nice length, nice shape (I see what u mean about skimming the hips) and looks ‘floaty’ and like it would flow nicely when you move. Great understated basic for teaming with a stunning jacket for work or a wedding . However def nothing special about it. It’s worth £44, it’s not distinctive enough to be worth £149

ExpectingToFly · 10/02/2021 22:01

I think it looks nice! But defo not worth the full price

GCAcademic · 10/02/2021 22:03

I’ve had viscose dresses shrink. I avoid it like the plague now.

Divebar2021 · 10/02/2021 22:04

I think it’s a pretty, office appropriate dress. It’s quite feminine which is not my style but I can see it’s very flattering. I also think John Lewis Is a perfectly decent department store that offers a range of brands like any other department store.

Toorapid · 10/02/2021 22:04

If you don't buy viscose, what do you buy for work dresses? Cotton is too casual, polyester is like wearing a plastic bag.

OP posts:
LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 10/02/2021 22:13

I like it. I don't think the model does it justice.

Snufkins · 10/02/2021 22:20

I think it looks nice but only 1 star reviews would put me off even if it was reduced to £10!

MoltonSilver · 10/02/2021 23:11

I've never had a problem washing viscose.
