How do you paint your nails so they don't chip within 10 minutes?

Just that really.
I painted my nails last night using 2 coats of rimmel gel envy, gel envy top coat and seche vite. 24 hours later they look crap, all chipped at the ends. How do you paint your nails at home that lasts at least a couple of days?

I've tried for years and years. I eventually bought a gel kit and I've never looked back.

Gel kit with a uv lamp

Shellac is the only way for me !

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 07/02/2021 21:51

You need a good base coat to help the polish to “stick”. I use Orly Bonder which is a kind of rubbery finish, rather than smooth. Make sure your polish isn’t thick too - better three thin coats than two chunky ones - and guve your nails a swipe over with remover before you put anything on them.

I know I am in a minority, but I don’t like SV - my preferred topcoats are either Essie Good to Go, or Jessica Brilliant.

UV is the only way

PersonaNonGarter · 08/02/2021 00:05

I have stopped doing so many coats. Base coat and one coat of colour lasts way longer. (I am just going for a french look tho).

PawPawNoodle · 08/02/2021 00:59

Don't use rimmel for a start, it's possibly the worst brand out there for nail polish!

Are you capping the nails I.e. painting top coat over the tip?

I agree with pp about SV - I don't find it works that well any more and have moved to Essie GTG

Scittle · 08/02/2021 06:42

OK, so talk to me about gel kits...
I have some argos vouchers. What do I need? Do you have to buy special nail polish? How does it work?

I'm thinking of getting a gel nail kit!
I've been looking at cheap ones on Amazon, mixed reviews but I don't have a big budget 🙈

I have noticed this. I haven't got worse at painting my nails, I can afford better polish/base coats etc so I think it might be that nail varnish itself has changed. Probably got rid of some of the worst chemicals in them. A comparison may be in order!

Oatsamazing · 08/02/2021 07:07

My sister always has immaculate nails, she swears by essie polishes and a top coat called Seche vite.

The Mylee kit!

BobbinThreadbare123 · 08/02/2021 16:53

I keep looking at those Mylee kits on Amazon, but there's so many I don't know which to choose. Also my issue is how do you get the stuff OFF!?

jcoc147 · 08/02/2021 17:09

I have the mylee kit and it's amazing! If you buy the full kit it comes with the solution to take gel varnish off.

Summerhillsquare · 08/02/2021 17:09

I have the cheapest solution: do one coat before bed, another coat in the morning. Wear gloves when washing up. That's it. Last's about 4-5 days.

JeanClaudeVanDammit · 08/02/2021 17:11

I get a good week out of the Essie Gel Couture polish and top coat. I did have one of the home gel kits with LED light a while back but didn’t feel it lasted long enough to warrant all the faff, nowhere near as long as I’d get from Shellac or something at a salon.

Yellow85 · 08/02/2021 17:13

Also second the mylee full works set. I get a week out of mine, but only because my nails grow so quickly! Super easy but def worth getting some silicon soak off covers

camperjam · 09/02/2021 14:03

I've just started using a uv light. Mine is the mylee one and it's great.
I found Aliver nail polish gel remover on Amazon. You just paint it over your nails and it dissolves the gel. No soaking or peeling the gel off. It's brilliant.
I work from home at the moment and I just do them while I'm on a boring zoom call 😁

Bananaman123 · 09/02/2021 15:44

The mylee kits or sensationail kits come with all you need. I watched so e youtube vids first. I have both kits and love mylee more

FinallyFluid · 09/02/2021 15:49

I am just super envious of anyone who has nails in the winter.

Relevant/not relevant. Grin

sylbunny · 09/02/2021 20:15

I bought this kit from Amazon. It's one of the mylee kits and comes with everything you need including 4 colours. The only extra thing I use is a nail file to buff the nail when removing as it helps to break through the top coat (buff with file then wrap in remover with tin foil wrapped over).

A good tip is to make sure you paint some top coat over your tips and also apply a nail oil daily.

Ok I succumbed and bought the Mylee kit having read this thread. It arrived this morning and I did my nails with it this afternoon. Very easy to use, nice colours and the finish is lovely. But omg the bloody lamp nearly blinded me. Will be interested to see how they last.
