I finally got the diamond earrings of my dreams but they HURT

DP bought me a pair of solitaire earrings as an anniversary gift. I've wanted a pair for about a decade so it was pretty special.

However, when they arrived I saw that they were a screw stem and it hurt like a bitch to put them in. And the them out. My ears bled and I've been wearing stainless steel earrings for a couple of weeks while my ears heal.

I don't know what to do. I kind of resent them now, even though they are beautiful.

Is this normal? I don't want to return them as it was a very good deal for diamonds (1ct total) and I LOVE how they sparkle but I can't deal with the pain.

Can you get the stones re-set in a more comfortable fitting?

Londoncatshed · 05/02/2021 21:43

I would take them (when you can) to a jeweller and see what they say. Maybe they can be altered slightly to allow a little more space between your ear and screw?

Why did they hurt to put in? Can you attach a photograph?

Yes that's the final step I suppose but I'm trying to avoid spending money, as ridiculous as that sounds. We've had a rough few years with infertility and we're now saving money for IVF.

I tried to push them in and it wouldn't budge. So I screwed them in, which worked, but hurt A LOT.

Photo duly attached.

They probably just hurt because they are thicker than your usual earrings. Wait till your ears heal then try them again with a bit of Vaseline.

cheeseybean · 05/02/2021 21:55

Yea you're just going to have to bear with the pain for a while until your ears get used to them. The stem is probably thicker than what you're used to thanks to the screw part.
You'll get there!

Oh god. So when my ears are used to it, will they just go in like normal earrings or...?

I'm thinking of giving it another go tomorrow.

I wonder if you could get thicker stem earrings without the threading to make the holes bigger? Is there such a thing as stem thickness?

Username7521 · 05/02/2021 22:00

I have a pair with the screw in the back. My ears have never got used to them.
I’m currently wearing 0.2ct and live in them.
I hope you have better luck op!

Justmuddlingalong · 05/02/2021 22:01

Ouch. I've never come across earrings with screw posts like that. What's the reason, less chance of them falling out?

Craftycorvid · 05/02/2021 22:02

Have to say I’ve never seen earring fittings like this - sorry, realise that’s not helpful! I’d find a good jeweller as pp suggest.

indemMUND · 05/02/2021 22:03

I have multiple ear piercings and have done for over a decade but I've never seen that before and didn't know it was a thing. Wtf?

Peakedin1997 · 05/02/2021 22:05

I've got several piercings and I've worn jewellery with a screw on the end, and the screw itself has never been a particular problem.

However, it is usually a bit sore if you try to put a thicker piece of jewellery in than you are used to wearing. What I would do is put the new jewellery in using a blob of Vaseline, then leave it in for a few days to let it heal. However, I guess you probably won't want to sleep in diamond earrings.

Do you own any other earrings which have a thick stem that you can wear regularly and sleep in to stretch your piercings a bit? Then the diamond ones would hopefully go in more easily in future.

Toddlerteaplease · 05/02/2021 22:05

Ouch. They look very painful! Never seen anything like them.

Justkeeprollingalong · 05/02/2021 22:06

Never seen an earring like that- looks like an instrument of torture!

ginislife · 05/02/2021 22:06

Oh god, this is worrying. I have a pair on order that I've paid a lot of money for that I'm expecting to look like these. They'd better not hurt !!!

MeepleMe · 05/02/2021 22:06

Never seen earrings like this ever, seems totally unnecessary. I'd get them reset when you can afford it OP. Maybe the cost could be your next birthday/Christmas present from DP or family.

Peakedin1997 · 05/02/2021 22:08

I've got body piercing jewellery with a screw on the end, eg a belly button bar where the ball screws onto the end after you put it in. The screw doesn't make it more uncomfortable to put in unless it's a very tight fit.

harriethoyle · 05/02/2021 22:08

Ouch 😬 I would get them reset if you can. They're too nice not to wear!

TheBeesKnee · 05/02/2021 22:09

Apileofballyhoo

So I have 16g earrings in at the moment to try and stretch the opening a bit from an 18g.

indemMUND and Justmuddlingalong

To be fair there's no way these are falling out Hmm the second time I wore them I didn't even bother with putting the back on and they stayed out.

Username7521

Oh noo, do you just never take them off?!

I tried sleeping with them in but the stabbing was uncomfortable as I sleep on my side usually.

OP posts:
cheeseybean · 05/02/2021 22:09

Yes it'll be fine. The screw back is actually great because they are more secure in your ear. Many expensive diamond earrings come like this, I have a few in different positions in my ears and they've all taken time to heal perfectly but now I don't even notice them and I sleep in them. They never come out!

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 05/02/2021 22:10

The post looks thick. I can only wear earrings that have thin posts at the moment. I got two new pairs recently but can't wear them for long; they're too sore.

I hope they work out for you op. That's very annoying and painful!

Username7521 · 05/02/2021 22:11

No I never wear these ones! I wear the smaller ones!

NewCatMummy · 05/02/2021 22:12

I’ve got similar- put them in and leave them- I wear mine for months at a time once they’re settled
