I finally got the diamond earrings of my dreams but they HURT

DP bought me a pair of solitaire earrings as an anniversary gift. I've wanted a pair for about a decade so it was pretty special.

However, when they arrived I saw that they were a screw stem and it hurt like a bitch to put them in. And the them out. My ears bled and I've been wearing stainless steel earrings for a couple of weeks while my ears heal.

I don't know what to do. I kind of resent them now, even though they are beautiful.

Is this normal? I don't want to return them as it was a very good deal for diamonds (1ct total) and I LOVE how they sparkle but I can't deal with the pain.

Could a jeweller dip the screw part in more gold to fill the screw gaps and make the stem smooth? Or shave the screw smooth?I think that by screwing it in you've torn some skin.

For now could you repeatedly dip the screw bit in clear nail polish to eventually make the screw section smooth?

huuuuunnnndderrricks · 06/02/2021 08:33

I've got diamond studs with screw fixings . They are very secure !

I don't think this would work, because a screw back post and butterfly have threads that fit together. If you change the post, the butterfly would not fit it. It would be easier to change the whole fitting.

You need to stretch your holes with a titanium stud. Then lube up.

OP I bought these earrings in the large size, I don’t know how thick the mini ones are.
www.notonthehighstreet.com/hurleyburley/product/18ct-gold-or-silver-mini-pull-through-star-earrings

and they’re much thicker than what I normally wear. You can sleep in them so I’d buy these to stretch your lobe slightly then your lovely new ones will slide right in after a few days. I’d also sleep in these pull though ones to keep the lobe hole used to the thicker stem.

To insert I recommend pulling your lobe down slightly and using a little Vaseline as mentioned above.

I really wouldn’t swap to butterfly backs for risk of losing them.

HereIfYouNeedMe · 06/02/2021 09:55

It's just because they're thicker, you won't have to screw them in once your ears get used to them. It will take a couple of days though, should be ok to take them out at night and still be ok putting them back in the next day. They will throb a bit for a couple do days, it just because they're stretching slightly. You could sleep in them by making sure the clasp is at the very end of the earring so it doesn't dig in. I've got 13 ear piercings and do that with the studs

You can get a jeweller to file down the screw to a smooth finish, I had some done for £60, which was much cheaper than getting the stones reset.

Housewife2010 · 06/02/2021 14:20

I wouldn't get rid of the screw if they're expensive. I've lost a diamond earring before and was devastated. Now my expensive pair have screw posts.

stealthbanana · 06/02/2021 15:38

I went the other way - had a standard setting on a pair of diamond solitaires and after 2 hours hunting around on a shag pile carpet after one fell out (I found it) I had them reset with a screw fitting.

You shouldn’t be in pain/bleeding, did you sanitise them properly? My screw setting isn’t any thicker than my normal earrings so maybe just take them back and ask for a thinner screw?

Fruitshootloop · 06/02/2021 15:42

I had the exact same problem. Are they from Angara? I contacted them and they told me to send the back and they replaced the settings with a slimmer, non-screw setting. For free, obviously. Now they’re perfect.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 06/02/2021 19:10

I have some diamond earrings that came with a screw back, i got my jeweller to get me new butterfly backs that were very secure, i hate screw backs.

Letseatgrandma · 06/02/2021 19:13

My mum had the same problem with her diamond studs-the screw post was too thick and she just couldn’t wear them. She took them back and the jeweller swapped the posts for normal butterfly backs and they are fine now.

mammmamia · 06/02/2021 20:29

Those look really thick OP - I’ve never seen any like that!

Housewife2010 · 08/02/2021 06:49

The problem is the thickness of the posts rather than the screws. I would see if the jeweller can do anything. My diamond earrings are from Boodles. When I tried them on they had smooth backs. They suggested engraving screws into them so they would be safer. I can't remember the last time I took them out. After losing a previous pair I wouldn't consider expensive earrings without screwbacks now.
