I finally got the diamond earrings of my dreams but they HURT

DP bought me a pair of solitaire earrings as an anniversary gift. I've wanted a pair for about a decade so it was pretty special.

However, when they arrived I saw that they were a screw stem and it hurt like a bitch to put them in. And the them out. My ears bled and I've been wearing stainless steel earrings for a couple of weeks while my ears heal.

I don't know what to do. I kind of resent them now, even though they are beautiful.

Is this normal? I don't want to return them as it was a very good deal for diamonds (1ct total) and I LOVE how they sparkle but I can't deal with the pain.

Oof, ask a jeweller how much to reset. It might not be much.

ginsparkles · 05/02/2021 22:14

I work in a jewellers. They may not need to be completely reset, just switch the post for a standard post and butterfly. If you do reset use the old gold and scrap to offset some of the cost.

Screw fittings are more secure, if it's a large diamond we recommend them as they are less likely to become loose and get lost.

I tried to push them in and it wouldn't budge. So I screwed them in, which worked, but hurt A LOT.

Photo duly attached.

OMG... I've never seen such torturous looking earring stems 🙈 Definitely have them reset!

@Craftycorvid

Have to say I’ve never seen earring fittings like this - sorry, realise that’s not helpful! I’d find a good jeweller as pp suggest.
I have numerous pairs of 24ct gold earrings and they all have this type of fitting ... never lost an earring.

However the stems look much thicker than mine .

Housewife2010 · 05/02/2021 22:15

I have diamond earrings with a screw post and would always recommend them. I lost a previous pair when they slipped out, so I'd never buy expensive earrings again without a screw post. I think your posts must be thicker than ones you are used to. Could you compare them? Mine are so comfortable that I never take them out.

ginsparkles · 05/02/2021 22:16

Also, to note, 1ct total should be fine with standard post and butterfly. Screw fitting also prevents them tipping forward, which shouldn't be an issue here.

ThanksItHasPockets · 05/02/2021 22:16

It’s very normal for valuable earrings to have screw backs as it is more secure. Butterflies are too easily knocked off.

OP, I’d go to a body jewellery store (lots of sellers on Etsy) and get some labret studs or barbells sized slightly thicker than you are used to in titanium or surgical steel. They are not at all expensive. You might need to go through a couple pairs with a gradual size increase but these will stretch your piercings ever so slightly to accommodate the screw post. It is the same principle as stretching flesh rings but on a much smaller scale and much naicer!

dementedma · 05/02/2021 22:16

I've never seen screw in earrings and I have over 80 pairs. Maybe they're not expensive enough!

Username7521 · 05/02/2021 22:17

OP, I do have others with screws that I get on fine with, just not my single diamonds. I don’t know what it is about those ones but I just can’t wear them!

Crikeycroc · 05/02/2021 22:20

I have the same back on my earrings too. I sleep with them in and they don’t bother me at all.
The pierced hole can easily be stretched. For example those emo ear stretchers that were popular when I was a teenager - no one goes straight to the large size, it is a gradual process.

TheBeesKnee · 05/02/2021 22:22

ginsparkles

How much would that cost?

I actually think I'm going to vom.

ginsparkles · 05/02/2021 22:25

Depends on the jeweller and the work involved. I would take them to a good independent jeweller and ask them to quote. But shouldn't be crazy money. Screw stems tend to be a bit thicker so switching them might well work.

NuzzleandScratch · 05/02/2021 22:25

I have a pair like this, I tend to wear them nearly all the time, but if I do take them out, I use a decent blob of Vaseline on the end to put them back in and they're fine.

justabigdisco · 05/02/2021 22:25

I’ve never seen ones like this either, but I imagine they are like that to stop them falling out. It’s like when you haven’t worn earrings for ages and then put some in. Your ears will get used to them.

Ninkanink · 05/02/2021 22:27

Screw fittings are often used for diamond (and other expensive) earrings because they prevent you losing them.

I’d persevere for a bit longer.

GeidiPrimes · 05/02/2021 22:36

If they're too uncomfy to wear and you don't want to stretch your holes Blush you might be able to have new posts soldered on rather than a complete reset. They may well be able to attach a finer threaded post (preferable with diamond earrings - a pisser when you lose one).

Exhausteddog · 05/02/2021 22:44

Screw fittings can be more secure....but can easily get cross threaded.if you do get in touch with a jeweller to swap the fittings, ask for alpha fittings, they are more secure than regular butterflies but normal stems.

Onestep2021 · 05/02/2021 22:47

My mum has a few beautiful Diamond earrings from her mother. All screw like this. She told me she got used to them very quickly and sleeps with them without issue

Jocasta2018 · 05/02/2021 22:49

I've got some diamond earrings from Tiffany's & they've got screw posts. Ok to wear but wouldn't want to sleep in them!

Exhausteddog · 05/02/2021 22:50

This is the type of thing I meant

I finally got the diamond earrings of my dreams but they HURT
redferrari · 05/02/2021 22:54

Most of my earrings are screw posts in them. I get them specially done as they are more secure. You should wear them a couple of hours daily and then keep applying Vaseline. You will get used to them.

idontlikealdi · 05/02/2021 23:22

If you're going to wear earrings like that you take them out each night. I'm far too lazy for that and would get them reset Ona standard butterfly. Then you run the risk of risnsing then die the shower...

earsup · 05/02/2021 23:25

just buy the studs on ebay they use for the gun piercing, slightly thicker stem and then pop yours in a few weeks later when all healed up....screw fitting is much more secure.

Katinthedoghouse · 05/02/2021 23:32

Are they Tiffany ?

Deffo get the backs changed to those pictured above, Cartier use that style and I wear them all the time. After all why wouldn’t you ? The only thing is they do get blocked with debris (yuck) so every few months I put them in a pan and boil the gunk out.
